No more Sainsbury's deliveries

They will now only deliver to you if they have identified you as elderly, vulnerable or disabled. I assume other supermarkets will do the same.

I'm glad they have done this, but at the same time worried that the supermarkets will be busier germ factories than ever!

Why would anybody be primarily concerned about privacy in this situation?

If you are worried about that, maybe you aren’t as concerned about your food supply?

adaline · 23/03/2020 09:58

Sainsbury's aren't the only shop in the country.

Not everywhere has a choice of delivery, though. If you're rural you often only have a choice of 1-2 supermarkets. Around here, for example, we have a choice of two. ASDA or Tesco, that's it. Nowhere else deliver to us as we're too rural.

woodlandwalker · 23/03/2020 09:59

I class as vulnerable due to health issues but the phone number to call to register with Sainsburys is permanently engaged. I always shop online, don't drive and can't carry a week's shopping. This means going to the shops when I am meant to be avoiding them, it's ridiculous. They should open an email address so you can register and they can action the messages gradually.

EightNineTen · 23/03/2020 10:02

I looked online last night and Sainsbury's had loads of slots for today so I booked one. They don't have half the stuff I ordered but at least I'll be getting crisps and chocolate digestives!

alloutoffucks · 23/03/2020 10:02

The lack of food in shops is an issue for everyone. That does not make you a priority.

LucaFritz · 23/03/2020 10:03

I didn't receive a letter only a phonecall Confused

Mumto1girl3boys · 23/03/2020 10:05

Ridiculous. What about single mothers with kids?

bluebell34567 · 23/03/2020 10:05

sainsburys dont look like they are well organized in this situation.

Chanel05 · 23/03/2020 10:05

Don't know how this works really. DH arranged for delivery with Sainsbury's for his 88 year old nan and was contacted this morning to say she didn't meet the criteria!

feelingverylazytoday · 23/03/2020 10:09

The real issue is that the government needs to introduce rationing
Should have already been done 3- 4 weeks ago. Then everyone could have built up their 2 week supply over the last month, and now focus could go on people who have been asked to self isolate for 3-4 months, and supporting frontline key workers.

RandomlyChosenName · 23/03/2020 10:13

They could do essentials bags that you can collect with your ration ticket. Every person in country receives on bag per week. You collect from supermarkets.

I think this makes sense.

Xenia · 23/03/2020 10:17

I don't think that is useful for everyone - we have lots of food here in outer London and I have not queued once either. The only item I wanted recently and could not get in one shop was eggs. I have not looked for toilet paper for 2 or 3 weeks but I am sure that is hard to get.

stormsurfer · 23/03/2020 10:18

Does anyone know how using the Click and Collect service works? I was wondering if one of my parents (80+) drove to the click and collect would there be a way to get the shopping into the boot of their car without any contact?

1forsorrow · 23/03/2020 10:22

They haven't identified me as needing home deliveries, I'm late 60s DH is mid 70s with health issues so I think we qualify. If they don't identify you then you have to phone them. I've been trying since the lines opened at 8 am but can't get through.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 23/03/2020 10:22

I had an email from Sainsbury's this morning, and I read it that they were prioritising delivery for particular groups, not that it was only for those people.

niffynoonoo · 23/03/2020 10:22

Ive cancelled my delivery saver. I`m about to drop my last slot for this Friday, let someone else take it.x

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 23/03/2020 10:25

The supermarkets don’t just want to sell “essentials” though do they? They still want to make huge profits from non-essential items.
Who defines essential anyway? It will differ from person to person, family to family.

I’m willing to bet rationing won’t happen, especially as supermarkets will be one of the main employers now.

Santaclauswhosthat · 23/03/2020 10:40

We've been identified as vulnerable. I think because according to a screenshot I've seen from asthma UK before it went down, the medication one of my kids is on means we'll be getting that letter. It works for us as I'm single and I don't drive and have found it increasingly difficult to get things. Friends have tried to help out but they themselves are struggling and having to go to three or four shops and even then not finding stuff. So I'm glad they're doing this.

adaline · 23/03/2020 10:40

Out of curiosity I've just checked the two companies who deliver here - neither have any slots available, at all, for at least three weeks.

Luckily we have a delivery booked in for Sunday.

Blakes77 · 23/03/2020 10:42

This is so stupid.

a)What about key workers?
b)What about poor retail workers?
c)LOADS of people (including me) are shopping for elderly relatives. Well, I was only shopping for relatives but now I'm picking stuff up for neighbours too. A lot of older people don't use online shopping, mu mum for one.

Saracen · 23/03/2020 10:44

Anyone who needs help to get supplies and hasn't got friends or family to ask, try asking on a local community Facebook page. In many areas, dedicated FB groups are springing up to match people who need help with volunteers.

In my area there is an army of well-organised volunteers briefed on how best to support others who need deliveries. Plenty of people are off work or college with time on their hands, healthy and ready to do their bit. As soon as I'm out of isolation (someone in my family had a cough last week) I am jumping in.

Of course it isn't perfect, but it's well worth a try if you don't have friends you can ask.

RainMinusBow · 23/03/2020 10:45

@flameprincess I wonder that. I mean at 30 weeks' if I went in-store now it would be pretty obvious it's not just cake (well, mostly!!) but online it's a different matter. But as yet I've not had the email promised anyway.

Alez · 23/03/2020 10:46

What if you are isolating? Does that make you vulnerable?

alloutoffucks · 23/03/2020 10:47

I am waiting to see if I am in the very vulnerable group. I think I am, but not 100% sure. Assuming if I am Sainbury's will put me on as allowed deliveries. If not I may simply have to go out.

alloutoffucks · 23/03/2020 10:48

@Alez Surely depends. Anyone can self isolate.
