Piss off out the countryside

Aibu to think the idiots who have all fled from towns to the countryside are incredibly selfish.
I live in a small rural estate.
There are quite obviously people from towns and cities coming together on gatherings suddenly 'embracing' the countryside.
Ok fine; but they apparently can't stick to the public footpaths where they can all infect each other. Instead they keep coming off the footpath and walking the mile to our estate from it and hanging about.
The average age on our estate is 70+. I don't know anyone else that is under 70 and many are 90+ I haven't seen anyone leave their houses for a long time but today I saw a very elderly frail man take a walk on the estate and he was leaning on a bench when a load of teenagers came right up to the boundary of the road to our estate and I saw the man try to get away but he couldn't fast enough and nearly fell over from trying.

We live in isolation anyway generally. This is the first time we've had to deal with so many people coming through our field off the public footpath.
I wish they'd stay away. I also wish less risk people would understand what social distancing means. If they're venturing into our estate I've no doubt they're off gallivanting on to further farms etc. Which can only heighten the problems we face today. These dc are not from the rural area. I've never seen so many cars parked near the footpath. It's so daft it's upsetting.

Boris has warned we will have to go to lockdown. Is this really what people want?
Get out of the countryside if you don't live here. It's obvious so many elderly people live here. Come back in better times.

Please stop ripping one another apart. Coronavirus doesn't frighten me half as much as the savagery of human nature. We are nothing if we are not kind

TheMemoryLingers · 22/03/2020 13:53

People are allowed outside..

Yes - but this should be in their local area. What we should not be doing is driving to other areas to exercise.

Ginnymweasley · 22/03/2020 13:53

I live in north wales. It is rammed with people travelling down from north England. Someone decided to climb snowdon yesterday without the proper equipment for the time of year and the path, they fell, had to be rescued and are now taking up a much needed bed in hospital. The same hospital which only has 8!!! ICU beds and an ageing population. These people are travelling 1-2 hours for this, is it necessary travel?? Do you not have parks in the city? The rural hospitals can not cope with this, these people are killing people it is that simple. My dd wanted to go to the beach for a walk today, we couldn't as a bunch of out of town campers have set up in the carpark. Waiting for the police to move them on. Its ridiculous.

TheCumbrian · 22/03/2020 13:54

The Lake District is HEAVING today.

People who are doing this should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. People are losing their jobs, or putting their life on the line to save the lives of others whilst people are still selfishly doing whatever they please. What a waste.

JustGoFurther · 22/03/2020 13:55

Can I go to the hairdressers?
Can I go the gym?
Shall we visit Grandma?
Let’s all go to Sainsburys
Should I meet my friend for coffee?
Let’s have a family outing to a national park/beach/beauty spot etc etc with the other hundreds of people.

If Coronavirus doesn’t sink this country, the idiocy of its citizens will 🤷‍♀️

slartibarti · 22/03/2020 13:56

We had a huge group of Parkrunners in our small village yesterday as Parkrun everywhere has been cancelled.
They stayed in a group, barging past the mostly elderly lone walkers. Anyone who tried to explain about keeping a safe distances was laughed at or told to mind their own business.

NeckPainChairSearch · 22/03/2020 13:57

Get out of the countryside if you don't live here

I profoundly disagree with this. People should be observing the same social distancing rules wherever they live if they're not isolating. People are STILL allowed into the countryside PROVIDED they are absolutely mindful of doing it safely for themselves and other people.

This is a world away from the 'second homes' argument.

YouStupidBoy · 22/03/2020 13:58

Ginnymweasley our nearest hospital has only 6 critical care (mixed HDU and ITU) beds so I really hear you on the concerns of the sudden increase in population that visitors bring at this time!!

HyacynthBucket · 22/03/2020 13:59

Oranbgesnadbananas
This is a real problem for otherwise quiet areas where the elderly live. Could you print out and laminate a notice to put up somewhere prominent where visitors will see it, pointing out that the elderly locals are very vulnerable and to please avoid the area?
Unusual times need unusual solutions.

I was meant to be in the lakes for a long weekend now. I wouldn’t have dreamt of going With things as they are. We have had a laugh at the fact it Sod’s law we can’t go when the weather would have been perfect for a weekend of walking but these things can’t be helped

Zombiemum1946 · 22/03/2020 14:01

I should also add that the local mountain rescue has asked that people stay away as their ability to help is much reduced as it's the availability of the air ambulance and coast guard . When I said 2 ambulances, I meant 2 air ambulance.

InTheBlinkOfAnEye · 22/03/2020 14:02

For the first time ever, I suggest we all pray for a spell of bad weather - to keep the dickheads at home.

sassbott · 22/03/2020 14:02

Went for a country walk this am. Location about a 10 min drive from me. Relatively busy. And with the exception of one ignorant family who decided they had the right to take up the whole of the 3m path as they strolled, everyone else respectfully kept their distances. Passing each other on either side of the footpath. And in the main it was families and they were staying in their cluster groups.

In a 2 hour period, only one family didn’t practise social distancing, which to me is hugely positive and a sign that people are listening. And taking this seriously. And normally this is a walk done typically by locals. The car park is maintained by the National trust and remains open as it is one of their countryside locations that remains open.

I just wanted to interject a little positivity into the thread. For the people flooding into rural areas miles away from their homes and treating this like an extended holiday? I agree, idiots.

slartibarti · 22/03/2020 14:02

Someone sent me this poem doing the rounds on SM.. What a complete load of shite.
I hope someone cleverer than me will do a more realistic poem about how people didn't stay in when they should have done and put thousands of lives at risk.

PapsofJura · 22/03/2020 14:05

We were told to avoid unnecessary travel so people shouldn’t be jumping into their cars, camper vans etc. for their bit of fresh air especially when these same idiots can’t understand social distancing.

These same idiots will complain when we get lockdown as they are too stupid to follow the rules.

Cinammoncake · 22/03/2020 14:05

People are struggling with mental health issues and it's natural some will want to go for a walk in nature, the only thing they have left to do.

YANBU to think it's a bad idea when people end up creating big crowds, but YABU to say 'piss off out the countryside' so that the all the nice walks are left to just you and you're happy for people in built up urban areas to suffer the most. A lot of NIMBYism seems to be coming from the country folk atm.

In the end though, we all have to stay at home. Harder for some than others to get into nature. Sad for those who can't have that solace.

derxa · 22/03/2020 14:06

Why are people being so stupid? You are not welcome in our wee rural town. They are closing the local cottage hospital and we are far from the main hospital.

SnoozyLou · 22/03/2020 14:09

I live in a seaside town. Same amount of caravans headed down here as usual.

We were one of the first places for corona to hit, and now people are dying from it at the local hospital. It isn't just bringing it down here people should be wary of, but stupid is as stupid does.

Ginnymweasley · 22/03/2020 14:10

What part of unnecessary travel is difficult for people to understand. The people walking around here are not locals, the locals are staying inside on the main. We have people coming for holidays in their caravans. People still trying to book hotels since "they have a break now". No thought to the locals and residents at all. People are very selfish.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 22/03/2020 14:10

People are struggling with mental health issues and it's natural some will want to go for a walk in nature, the only thing they have left to do.

I am sure their mh would be better by staying at home for a bit then when we will have reports of hundreds of dead a day and funeral homes not managing. Yeah. Day out is totally worth it

Glitterb · 22/03/2020 14:12

@ SchadenfreudePersonified THIS! For me you have hit the nail on the head! Yesterday I witnessed a lady who admitted her children has been off school for a week already as she was terrified of them catching corona...yet bought both kids to get their nails painted in a busy salon. Lockdown will do all this idiots a favour!

Scoobygang7 · 22/03/2020 14:12

It's not about keep out of my countryside. I live in a northern town which is very small. Our usual income to the town is the holiday season. We've a large caravan park just down my road. They are still bloody turning up. Our nearest A&E is 45 minutes in good traffic.

May possibly be reduced to a 35 minute drive IF they use blue light. Next hospital is an hour and 15 mins away. I haven't left the house bar to walk to the field near us to walk the kids and dog. My dp is an essential worker and our local co-op was heaving yesterday. Locals we walking straight back out as it was too busy. I despair for the UK. Granted in a good day before this I'd generally only speak a hello to maybe 5 people that weren't me dp and kids.

Why would you want to risk being on lockdown in a static van or caravan?

Cheesypotato · 22/03/2020 14:13

you're happy for people in built up urban areas to suffer the most. A lot of NIMBYism seems to be coming from the country folk atm.
In many areas people are coming not just for a walk around the countryside but in their camper vans they do need to piss off, they're going to overwhelm an already far underfunded sparse health system in many areas. Countryside areas will suffer from this incredibly selfish behaviour.

SisterSist3r · 22/03/2020 14:13

I think this is a bit mean spirited. We are lucky enough to have a garden and to be surrounded by lovely countryside where I live. Lots of families and children don’t have either. We all need to share everything, nobody owns the countryside. Really don’t have a problem with locals getting out whilst shut in for hours on end.
