'Texas Lt governor: senior citizens might want to risk lives to preserve the economy

An extraordinary television interview tonight with a Texas Republican, Lt Governor Dan Patrick, who is 69 years old and will turn 70 this week.

Patrick and said he is concerned that public health measures to prevent coronavirus will end American life as he knows it, and said he would rather risk death than having the country continue with tough public health restrictions that hurt the economy. '

The only thing I've noticed is waking up in the night, scared, and hearing my alarm clock ticking all the time like it's trying to say something. It sounds different now, maybe I should stop trying to escape

The government guidance says people should only leave home for one of four reasons:

Shopping for basic necessities such as food and medicine. Shopping trips should be as infrequent as possible
One form of exercise a day such as a run, walk, or cycle. This should be done alone or only with people you live with
Any medical need, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person. This includes moving children under the age of 18 between their parents' homes, where applicable. Key workers or those with children identified as vulnerable can continue to take their children to school
Travelling to and from work, but only where work absolutely cannot be done from home

RosieSunset- that article Sad. So scared that's what will happen here if we run out of care staff...
Good to see the gov haves added dropping kids off for custody visits to the list of things you can do re essential travel... that was a worry.

our local bitch&stich group is sewing face masks for delivery people.
they say that they are not effective enough for carers but ok for handing over shopping at the door.

I feel relieved that they are actually doing something. Selfishly I am glad that you can still go outside. My fear was that by the time I came out of self isolation you would be banned from leaving the house which is tough when you have a very active toddler.

The shielding measures for the vulnerable are reassuring too. It’s all very well to say stay at home when there are no delivery slots and you have to go to multiple shops because people have panic bought all the pasta and peanut butter. My uncle has been told by his constant that he is on the list. I am relieved that he is going to get some practical help.

I am relieved that they are finally doing something, although really lockdown should have happened at the same time as closing schools. Unfortunately I predict a spike in cases in 2 weeks and a spike in deaths in 3-4 weeks time due to all the idiots this past weekend.
We tried to go to a normally deserted national trust woodland on Sunday - and drove straight past as it was so crowded and parking was up the side of the road for miles! Found a reasonably deserted path elsewhere for a walk . I think some people think being outside is magic - but then only 1 week ago the government was saying mass gatherings outside was fine and dandy - Cheltenham festival and football matches anyone? So I don't think we can blame the public for being confused and stupid

@Winebythebottle Nobody should be buying three months supply of anything that's why the supermarkets have no food

Given all these threads have a number it is easy to find by going to the topic and scrolling down.

Sadly I think this won't work as well as it could. Decent sensible people were already cutting down on their going out and keeping a sensible distance. Sadly there are too many selfish people who think their needs are more important than potentially saving lives and as I have said before, it will be innocent strangers they infect and potentially kill rather than themselves.

You are no more important or special than anyone else unless you work for the emergency services and then we thank you for what you are doing so stay the fuck home and we will get through this quicker and less depleted of our community.
