What about supermarkets that are going to be full to the brim with people stockpiling?

Reastie · 23/03/2020 21:16

Re construction sites. Supply shops will be closed, builders likely won’t be able to keep working if can’t get supplies for their work.

Still don’t know where this puts us with Dhs work which involves lots of small car journeys but staying in can or outside and not with people. Isn’t an essential job role like a key worker though.

SunshineCake · 23/03/2020 21:16

*@BarbedBloom no offence to your dh work but sending out clothes is not an essential job.

unique1986 · 23/03/2020 21:17

I live alone but I still reckon lots of people will have their friends/relatives around their houses for dinners and lunches at the weekends or even just a drink.

Horehound · 23/03/2020 21:18

Builders wil be fined because the work they are going to is not essential...

Angryrant55 · 23/03/2020 21:19

Our washing machine is due for repair tommrow - be interesting to see if they cancel - they messaged to say they coming at 6pm but who knows.

Horehound · 23/03/2020 21:19

My local village ship just out the feelers out for a coronavirus community stop to exchange games and books and DVDs etc.

People really are stupid.

GuessWhoBoo · 23/03/2020 21:21

@Angryrant55 what did he say about banks and post offices please?

Angryrant55 · 23/03/2020 21:21

Companies themselves don't know what is essential.

unique1986 · 23/03/2020 21:22

I'm assuming barbers etc have to close..

Angryrant55 · 23/03/2020 21:22

Banks and post offices to remain home.

GuessWhoBoo · 23/03/2020 21:23

@Angryrant55 ok thank you.

Horehound · 23/03/2020 21:24

Basically if it's just to keep a business open for making money, it's not essential.

Even @unique1986 says her company now makes hand sanitizwr. It's probably not essential because there isn't actually a shortage of it.
If it's life and death like pharmaceutical, health care, etc that is essential.
If it's an online store selling paper and pens or a construction site...it's not essential

Angryrant55 · 23/03/2020 21:24

Will butchers and greengrocers remain open.

Horehound · 23/03/2020 21:24

Delivery drivers delivering fuel = essential
Working in a shoe shop = not essential

SunshineCake · 23/03/2020 21:25

FFS if your husband's job is not essential HE DOES NOT GO IN. It couldn't be clearer.

Horehound · 23/03/2020 21:25

Very likely @Angryrant55 since they are a food shop ..

Petiolaris · 23/03/2020 21:26

Loads of people on my FB saying “You’re allowed to go out to work if you can’t work from home, and I’m a gardener/builder/whatever so I can’t work from home, so that means I can go to work”.

Boris didn’t say all non-essential work had to stop. So I’m unclear on whether it should or not? They didn’t stop all non-essential work when Italy was initially on lockdown - factories etc were still operating.

Beebityboo · 23/03/2020 21:27

My mum is being so careful generally, but has just informed me she won't be stopping my brother from having his girlfriend visit every two/three days Hmm. She works at a supermarket, my step dad is 80. My fil who had cancer went to the beach this weekend.
I'm so fed up with them. I just want them to keep themselves safe!

Angryrant55 · 23/03/2020 21:29

Even the goverment advice forgets banks and post offices and only mentions if the work cant be done from home.
Which means builders are in limbo.

flowerycurtain · 23/03/2020 21:30

@horehound. It depends on what the construction site is. Our farm has 8 builders refitting sheds that have for livestock arriving (already born) in 6 weeks. I'm very much thinking they will still be working.

Angryrant55 · 23/03/2020 21:31

Will milkmen and the like keep delivering.

Horehound · 23/03/2020 21:31

Basically the question to ask is:
Will someone die if I don't do my job?
If the anser is yes, you go to work.
If the answer is no, you do not go to work but you work from home if possible
If you cannot work from home but the work is not essential you just don't work.

Sheesh

RedToothBrush · 23/03/2020 21:32

What about how you exercise ? Just walk about your street , or go in the car to the country if a mile or so away ?

Going in the car is a risk. They don't want car accidents.

The police think they could be severely down on numbers in a couple of weeks.

They don't want to be clearing up accidents.

Exercise means leaving your house on foot.

Going to Snowdon in the car to exercise is non essential travel.

Horehound · 23/03/2020 21:32

There's always going to be exceptions but come on folk....
