PA Media - 'Bosses at Sports Direct have said all stores will remain open because selling sporting and fitness equipment makes the company a vital asset during a national shutdown, according to an email seen by the PA news agency.'

MarshaBradyo · 23/03/2020 22:49

Oh you said more, but I still thought same with 20k

RedToothBrush · 23/03/2020 22:49

The bit about the numbers I don't understand is: Italy is much worse yet "only" has 6000+ deaths so how do we think we will have 200,000??

Not all regions of Italy are as badly affected.

Our target is 20,000 deaths not 200,000.

How big are fines? If they are smaller than what Sports Direct can make if open...

Angryrant55 · 23/03/2020 22:52

£30 for the public but companies might be forced shut.

AvocadoOwl · 23/03/2020 23:07

Supermarkets in Europe who sell non-food stuff (think Aldi aisle of dreams) have been forced to remove it in order to ensure it's not unfair for non-essential shops forced to close. I'd be surprised if Sports Direct gets to pass all it's offerings off as 'essential' Hmm

Has anyone seen or discussed the second wave of cases in Hong Kong? This has really pushed me over the edge tonight. I’ve kept shit, been in already for over two weeks and the thought of a second wave here as just done me in.

I’m worried about the fatalities but also so worried about the state the economy is going to be in after Sad

Angryrant55 · 23/03/2020 23:15

The one exercise a day is going to rather unenforceable - how many police are going to be covering 50k of people considering other crime will still be happening. I imagine they mainly going to be dealing with dispersing gangs of youths that they know.

Police officers surely will not remember if they saw someone at 9 am and 6pm exercising.

Rocketmam · 23/03/2020 23:27

£30 for the public

Then that isn't going to change a thing. Too many people already think their personal circumstances warrant different rules.

That fine is way too small.

The rules are unenforcable.

Angryrant55 · 23/03/2020 23:29

New goverment rules seemingly allow home and hardware stores plus the likes of superdrug who will say they non dispensing phamacies.

Shehab Khan - 'NEW: Some of the shops that will be open during #COVID19 lockdown

  • Supermarkets
  • Pharmacies
  • Petrol stations
  • Bicycle shops
  • Home and hardware shops
  • Laundrettes and dry cleaners
  • Garages
  • Car rentals
  • Pet shops
  • Corner shops + newsagents
  • Post offices
  • Banks.'
Angryrant55 · 23/03/2020 23:43

Millons will be flocking to B and Q so expect hardware shops the first to go.

Angryrant55 · 23/03/2020 23:45

Only about 10% of people working today at most will at home tommrow.

Calmonthesurfacebut · 23/03/2020 23:45

They need to start testing, especially for those nurses and police who are self isolating. They may well just have a bug and can return to work.

They also need to test those poor people in the care and nursing homes.

Angryrant55 · 23/03/2020 23:49

JD Sports also declaring essential status.

Same with WH Smith through their are by right a newsagent's.

Angryrant55 · 23/03/2020 23:52

Meaning the government will have to tighten the rules pretty quick.
Through of course newspapers are the most powerful and wont want sales diminished.

Angryrant55 · 23/03/2020 23:56

UK Prime Minister - 'PM @BorisJohnson
has announced that everyone must now stay at home except in exceptional circumstances, to protect our NHS and save lives'

Going to a hardware shop is therefore exceptional then.

RosieSunset · 24/03/2020 00:06

@MurrayTheMonk this article really brought home to me what an amazing job you are doing in the worst of circumstances.

Thank you.

Jonathan Freedland - 'Big divergence between US and UK tonight. As Britain goes into lockdown, Trump says America will “soon be open for business” again.'

I am having nightmares. Just woken up from one. I've had feelings of sadness last week; terrible anxiousness and horrible dream just now. Anyone else?

Imerc · 24/03/2020 01:00

No nightmares yet. Care to share

IronNeonClasp · 24/03/2020 01:08

@Imerc thanks. Just horrible. On my own in a house something caught my skirt going upstairs and pulled me back walked up in an unfamiliar house with 70's decor.

Had a few last week. Disorientating, so vivid had to wake myself. Haven't dreamed like this - remembered stuff from dreams in such a long time. Wondered if it went hand in hand with current situation. I work (from home) on CV and you can't escape it right? Think my brain is saturated with it all Sad
