Found this out today - refrigeration shops are out of freezers due to people buying them to stock up on extra frozen stuff!

This is bananas! Who is doing this crazy shit?!

whatdayisitandotherquestions · 21/03/2020 23:30

Damn! That should say we're NOW isolating for two weeks. (Hence are using up our stock of food).

defthand · 21/03/2020 23:33

Isn’t it a good thing if people shop less often? Less chance to spread disease. Especially if said people are vulnerable or front line NHS.

alloutoffucks · 21/03/2020 23:36

Food for 2 weeks fine, food for 3 months twattish.

You know the filming of that crying nurse? You all created that. And many others like it.

I know you won't care though.

BritWifeinUSA · 21/03/2020 23:42

The person who works in the shop says they can prioritize it do that only the old and needy can buy a freezer? What medical qualifications does he have that he can assess a person’s medical need based on the freezer they buy? What shop is this do I can be sure never to buy anything there? Has it not dawned on him that if someone is in isolation or very vulnerable it’s probably not them that’s buying the freezer anyway but their younger, healthy children or grandchildren? If my mother said she needed a freezer to get through this and we lived closer we would definitely be going buying the freezer for her. No need for her to be out and about unnecessarily.

I assume the friend who works at the store has refused to sell to the young people who are wanting to buy the freezers because he feels so passionately about their actions depriving the sick and needy? Thought not. His principles only go so far when there’s a profit to be made, I bet.

whatdayisitandotherquestions · 21/03/2020 23:42

But, everyone stocking up for 2 weeks at once causes empty shelves if the shops don't bring in more stock, don't you see that?

We should be asking what the government are doing to ensure everyone has enough food or access to deliveries to be able to isolate for 2 weeks, or 12 weeks, or whatever they is the latest.

Don't you see, if we all point the fingers at each other, it lets them off scott free? And at the moment we have a government that only acts when forced to. If we're not demanding they do something about the food they won't. They were going to let us all die, sorry get herd immunity before most of the country went WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU JUST SAY and they backtracked.

There isn't enough food in the shops as this is a crisis which needs to be managed.

whatdayisitandotherquestions · 21/03/2020 23:43

And, of course I care about the nurse, FFS. But alloutoffucks your post makes no sense. You say if I stocked up for 2 weeks that was fine but then call me a twat and say I was the cause of the nurse crying.

Which is it now? Make your mind up please.

alloutoffucks · 21/03/2020 23:45

i said 2 weeks fine, 12 weeks stocker uppers twats

whatdayisitandotherquestions · 21/03/2020 23:46

You might want to improve your grammar than as you wrote it as if it was aimed at me.

And, what should old people do, if not stock up for 12 weeks? What's their alternative?

alloutoffucks · 22/03/2020 00:00

I am ill.
Get people to help, volunteers, local shops deliver, neighbours, etc. Anyone who is not well off has to do this. They dont have money for 3 months of food.

alloutoffucks · 22/03/2020 00:03

And if you are well enough off to be able to stockpile 3 months of food, you can afford the more expensive specialist deliverers. Lots of local shops will deliver to people who really need it. I know right at moment they are overwhelmed, but it will calm down.
And in well off areas you will have neighbours who will help. Or you can do a click and collect order.
What do you think everyone who is not well off is doing?

alloutoffucks · 22/03/2020 00:05

And this is a chat forum, not an english lesson.

whatdayisitandotherquestions · 22/03/2020 00:47

What do you think everyone who is not well off is doing?

Erm, that'd be me, then.

I don't have to isolate for 12 weeks, thankfully, only 2, but if I did, then I'd be seriously considering putting all my energies into finding a freezer (as mine is bust) so I could put whatever bargains I could find into it and also so I could batch cook from scratch to save money. I'd likely borrow money to do this.

No click and collect slots available in any of the supermarkets near me, for the next 3 weeks, we looked at that the other day.

Lots of people who have been told to isolated for 12 weeks are skint, but will have to do what they can to make sure they have enough food. Handwaving this problem away by saying - oh, people who are stocking up for 12 weeks have money is missing the point by a country mile.

Many people with no money for take away / local deliveries etc are being told they need to self isolate for 12 weeks. In their position would I buy 10 packs of 20p noodles if I saw them? Yes, because it might be my only way to eat.

The solution is to get more food on the shelves, not have a go at people who are trying to survive FFS.

Don't you think the people stocking up include the vulnerable?

defthand · 22/03/2020 00:58

The problem is a few years back, to save themselves ££ our wholesalers shifted to a less warehousing, high turnover model of distribution. Fine in normal times, but not when people want to visit the supermarkets a bit less.

whatdayisitandotherquestions · 22/03/2020 01:02

Thank you defthand.

This is what everyone should be doing instead of this bollocks having a go at an imagined enemy.

i.e. trying to understand the underlying systems and work out why we' so easily get into this position with nothing on the shelves,.

If we understand it we can then look for ways to be better prepared . deal with it.

Perhaps people don't want to face how easily we run out of stuff when things aren't ticking over as normal. Perhaps it's easier to say "you're all twats" instead of demand change from the government.

It doesn't need to be like this. It's like this because of decisions people have made, in government and in business, that put profit before our safety. It's not because of people trying to feed their families in a time of crisis. It's because no effective planning for crisis has been built in.

“The UK produces roughly 60% of the food it consumes. Of the remaining 40%, about three-quarters is imported directly from the European Union, including a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables like citrus fruits, grapes and lettuces.

In other words, the food industry is highly dependent on just-in-time supply chains, and while the UK has more supermarkets per head than anywhere else in the world, those supermarkets keep very little in stock.”

whatdayisitandotherquestions · 22/03/2020 01:06

The supermarkets are staying open so it’s stupid to stock up, why pull you run yourself into debt for no reason

But people shouldn't be going to them if they can possibly help it

This virus kills is a mass killer. Let's have this conversation again in 3 weeks, see how you feel then.

alloutoffucks · 22/03/2020 01:06

I am vulnerable, in the most vulnerable category.

In my area you can't get cheap supermarket slots for online delivery. The artisanal deli that has lots of fruit and veg is still doing free delivery. They also are the only shop with good stock. Iceland and ASDA are only releasing slots for a week ahead. I am sure there will be some available. over the whole 12 weeks. And if you are choosing to self isolate and not in the most vulnerable category you can go outside to shop at quiet times. Things will calm down once all these people have their 3 months of stored food and stay inside. I got a slot for Sainsburys because they are cancelling people who are booking multiple slots.
And if none of that happened, I simply don't believe that most of these people do not have anyone that will get them some food over the 12 weeks. IME people with money tend to have more social contacts.

Personally I have had a few people offer to help. Not anyone I would ask more than once or twice. But a colleague offered, a neighbour offered, a friend and a friend who lives quite a drive away. I would also post on my online face book support group if desperate.

12 weeks is a very long time. We will be going into total lockdown. We may have the situation where only a tiny number of people are allowed in a shop at any one time. If that happens, please don't go out and buy even more food all you 3 monthers.

whatdayisitandotherquestions · 22/03/2020 01:08

If the remaining 40%, about three-quarters is imported directly from the European Union, including a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables like citrus fruits, grapes and lettuces

And Boris wants to press ahead with Brexit, which will push up the prices of vegetables and other European imports while all this is likely still going on. Slow handclap.

MissyJane2 · 22/03/2020 01:49

I am buying extra food for fear we might be put on lockdown by the government. Also because I cannot get the foods I want.

Tins of food is fine as I have had to store them in the corner of my kitchen on the floor because there is no space in my cupboards.

But my freezer is full and I have no room for frozen chips. So I don't know what I'm gonna do when my fresh potatoes run out because I can't get those anywhere.
Same old story, no food in the supermarkets.
So A second freezer would not be such a bad idea given the circumstances we are in, if you have got the space for one.
As you can only get so much in one freezer it cannot take loads of stuff unless you have the ones they have in the shops.

MissyJane2 · 22/03/2020 01:56

The biggest problem is also finding the food in the shops.
If you are lucky enough to have 2 freezers, you still have to find the food to fill them up with.

This was not a problem 2 weeks ago.
But it is now.

To think last month the shops had all the food we wanted we could buy for 10 people.
No rationing.
Now we cannot get anything and we now face being locked in our homes by the government thinking of making a lockdown the law of the land. And we won't be able to even go out anymore.
The future looks very bleak indeed.
Not much to look forward to is it.

LuxLFC · 22/03/2020 05:45

Oops clicked post by mistake!
anyway the door had been broken for a while. Now I know why the delivery driver said there wouldn't be any fridges or freezers left in England soon!

Deelish75 · 22/03/2020 06:24

We bought a second freezer about three weeks ago. After hearing that CV was spreading through Northern Italy and Brits were coming back from the area and then being tested positive for the virus and being told to isolate.

We’ve been slowly stocking up on food to hopefully get us through two weeks family isolation. We don’t have family nearby and although we have lovely friends I wouldn’t expect them to do a full weekly shop for us.

What I do think is cheeky fuckery is the electrical stores. The freezer we bought is now out of stock but it’s last selling price was £120 more than what we paid for it.

Deelish75 · 22/03/2020 06:27

I’ve not panic bought toilet rolls either.

MrsMGE · 22/03/2020 06:47

It's ridiculous people are stocking up for 12 weeks, end of.

We look after a number of vulnerable people in the family right now who have to be isolated, as well as buy food for 1 week for ourselves and keep food for 2 weeks frozen in our freezer which we do not touch - this is in case we do get ill (it's a normal size freezer, in a 6-foot tall Samsung fridge for those who asked - 4 shelves). I'm good at Tetris and fitted everything in pretty well.

We make 2 trips to the shops per week, and would be making 1 if people like some if you lot hadn't emptied the shelves and thought about the alternatives, such as getting someone to shop for you every fortnight if no one from your household absolutely cannot get out (which is in itself a relatively rare situation!). If it wasn't for such greed and selfishness then we all would still be able to shop online with reasonable waiting times.

No one needs numerous fully stocked up freezers per household! No one needs that much bloody food at once!

This isn't prepping and there is nothing reasonable about what you have done. It's shameful because you've emptied the shelves for those in the same need as you, for those who look after such people like me, for those who are out there helping others, like the NHS. Stop being all "me, me, me", we all need to survive this and the world doesn't revolve around you!
