CFs literally panic buying freezers!

Found this out today - refrigeration shops are out of freezers due to people buying them to stock up on extra frozen stuff!

This is bananas! Who is doing this crazy shit?!

Idiots who advocate buying little and often should educate themselves

It’s all that people are able to do due to supermarkets being fucking empty thanks to morons buying 3 months of food at a time.

@Prepenultimate

For the 10000th time - the person in the shop I am talking about has a list of what people have previously bought from him. We live in an affluent area with huge houses. He can see if someone bought an American fridge freezer and a chest 2 years ago and is now buying another chest. There is simply no bloody need!!!!!

OP, I'm with you, 100%. Selfish people will stay selfish forever, and this pandemic only highlights this. You can explain over and over again, but the fact is if someone is only focused on themselves, they won't see you're right.

Lots of examples on this thread.

Prepenultimate · 22/03/2020 09:07

A shopkeeper keeps a list of customers purchases for years!!!!! Well maybe their old appliances have broken down. I once got through 3 washing machines in 2 years. I'm just not going to condemn people for buying a new freezer at this time.
People are caught between rock and a hard place. They are being told to stay in for anything up to 12 weeks. Large families can only buy many things in the same numbers as a single person.
There are millions of people refusing to social distance- I'll condemn them, but not someone buying an extra freezer.

EmeraldShamrock · 22/03/2020 09:21

I feel so sorry for those who don't have the cash to buy extra food, when they get paid the shelves are empty, they'll be left paying higher prices in corner shop.
I was unemployed years ago trying to budget buttons for essentials. This is Social economics at it's worst.

Stuffandnonsense100 · 22/03/2020 09:33

@emeraldshamrock

Agree

@Prepenultimate

Do you know how a database works? He can see when they bought them. He was able to tell me what the old owner of the new house bought; some 15 years ago! Presumably before the database was even electronic. I will condemn people for greed and overbuying to protect themselves without giving a shiny shit about those less fortunate. I am well off - I could easy have stockpiled or screwed others over as I have the money to buy multiple freezers and buy months’ worth of food at a time but I did not because I can see the bigger picture - how it fucks over nhs workers and the elderly and those without means to buy more than a week or less at a time. I would also assume people have made no secret of WHY they are buying their freezers - eg “I don’t have a freezer”, “my freezer broke”, “I am stocking up for the winter like a selfish bellend”

FFS. If the stockpilers had just continued with their usual shopping habits then we wouldn’t be in this mess.

Voice0fReason · 22/03/2020 09:44

My DH and I are both disabled. We have 2 adult disabled children at home with us. Shopping is difficult at the best of times. DH is also in a vulnerable group. We have always had 2 freezers because that suited our needs. We started with a chest freezer and we inherited a fridge/freezer with a house so we stuck with both and found it invaluable.

It allows us to store some bread and milk as well as some fruit & veg that we grew in the garden. I also batch cook so there are a whole load of takeaway containers with single-portion meals in them.

There are perfectly good reasons why some people benefit from having more than one freezer.

If enough people had the space to have a setup like ours then there wouldn't need to be so much panic buying as they would be well-stocked.

Criticise me all you want but I haven't contributed to the problem as I have only topped my freezer up with a bag of chips and a loaf of bread in the last couple of weeks. I might want some eggs in about a week but that's hardly essential and other than that I don't need to shop at all for the next few weeks.

I completely understand why any vulnerable person might want to buy a freezer so they can avoid the shops. Yes there are some people taking the piss but not everyone.

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 22/03/2020 09:44

If everybody had shopped sensibly and hadn't left everything at the very last minute we wouldn't be in this mess.

There are a handful of morons piling trolleys with tens of identical items. But not many. It's people buying more and buying too much because they didn't have enough in the first place who are the problem.

Fine, but don't moan about it when you ARE the problem!

EmeraldShamrock · 22/03/2020 09:54

At this stage everyone will benefit from the smart stock pilers who started around Brexit, everyone except those without cash has had a month to get extras. I started buying extra toiletries and pasta 4 weeks ago, I also added some to the donation box. I saw this on another thread a poster in Italy. 👇 Get food shopping, insist government closes all non essential business, lockdown.
By the way, two weeks ago, our death toll on 7 march was 233...that's your uk number today. You are still exactly two weeks behind us. That curve has not changed in a month. You are no different to us, we are very very similar European countries, believe me, I have lived in UK for 25 years and in Italy for 10 years. We are very similar in many ways. In two weeks your deaths will be around the 4,800 mark I'm afraid. That's not dependent on what you do today, because that is the result of people who are already carrying the virus, its history. It's done

Stuffandnonsense100 · 22/03/2020 09:55

If everybody had shopped sensibly and hadn't left everything at the very last minute we wouldn't be in this mess

Translation: if everyone had started stockpiling a month earlier, we would have food left.

Incorrect. The problem would have just started sooner. Everyone buying extra pasta and eggs in every shop is the bloody problem! It doesn’t need to be a shopping trolley piled high to become an issue. Yes, some people are worse than others - the wankers buying up all the formula to sell or for adult milk are scum of the earth - but anyone just titting around with extra bits and bobs is also an issue.

It’s amazing because I am usually very wasteful with food actually but since this has started it has become clear just how little food a family of 3 really need per week, and how to make it last.

whatdayisitandotherquestions · 22/03/2020 09:56

If it wasn't for such greed and selfishness then we all would still be able to shop online with reasonable waiting times

Yes, but the greed and selfishness isn't the individuals shopping.

You really need to be questioning why the system falls over so easily (and predictably) in a crisis. And it's because of the greed and selfishness of those in business and government who have allowed such an essential service to be streamlined for profit with no decent crisis planning.

Also - no, encouraging once a week shopping isn't reasonable. People are about to start dying in their hundreds, probably thousands. Doctors and nurses are going to have to routinely decide who lives or dies because of lack of equipment and beds. We should be doing everything we can to support keeping people out of shops including leaning on the supermarkets to warehouse more stock so they don't run out so easily.

Trying to get the population to act as if there isn't a life threatening crisis happening is unrealistic. What we need is the government and shops to step up.

All the time you're having a go at other people and not them is a total waste of time and energy.

whatdayisitandotherquestions · 22/03/2020 10:00

sell or for adult milk are scum of the earth - but anyone just titting around with extra bits and bobs is also an issue

No, the problem is the shops not having sufficient stock. You can't seriously ask people not to buy extra when we've been told to self isolate and have DC to feed.

Putting pressure on government to do something positive to get shops to crisis plan would be positive. Having a go at other people achieved nothing.

Maybe you're enjoying this crisis because it's an excuse to feel morally superior and have a go at people? Shame on you.

MunaZaldrizoti · 22/03/2020 10:01

Ya, some people are jackasses

whatdayisitandotherquestions · 22/03/2020 10:02

Oops only meant to comment on this bit

anyone just titting around with extra bits and bobs is also an issue

(Agree those buying stuff to sell at a huge profit are immoral)

whatdayisitandotherquestions · 22/03/2020 10:05

If the stockpilers had just continued with their usual shopping habits then we wouldn’t be in this mess

No. If the government - who knew this crisis was coming but chose not to act - demanded the supermarkets warehoused stock instead of relying on a streamlined just-in-time model, amd took on extra staff to process deliveries then we might not ne in this mess.

Stuffandnonsense100 · 22/03/2020 10:05

Putting pressure on government to do something positive to get shops to crisis plan would be positive. Having a go at other people achieved nothing

I disagree. People should take responsibility and stop stockpiling!

Government are handling this as best they can. It’s pretty scary times and the shops and govt are doing their best in fairly unchartered territories. If you have an idea for them then by all means share it!

OP posts:
Stuffandnonsense100 · 22/03/2020 10:08

This is actually a lot like the Prisoner’s dilema (or whatever it is called 🙈):

Don’t stockpile for your own family, trust other people do to the same and everything will be fine for everyone.

Stockpile aggressively and everyone else is not.

OP posts:
alloutoffucks · 22/03/2020 10:10

Also are you really not having any fresh food for 3 months? Zero?

Stuffandnonsense100 · 22/03/2020 10:11

@alloutoffucks

Is that aimed at me? We have fresh food because we are having to go weekly due to so much being out!

OP posts:
Dongdingdong · 22/03/2020 10:15

If the stockpilers had just continued with their usual shopping habits then we wouldn’t be in this mess

No. If the government - who knew this crisis was coming but chose not to act

Nope - stockpilers are the ones who’ve caused this issue, not the government. I know there are a number of them on here - you should all be utterly ashamed of yourselves. Like I say, if everyone had carried on as normal there would be no issues.

alloutoffucks · 22/03/2020 10:16

No it is for anyone on this thread who said they bought 3 months of food.
Most will be liars, they will still be asking people to bring them bits of fresh food.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 22/03/2020 10:17

It’s amazing because I am usually very wasteful with food actually but since this has started it has become clear just how little food a family of 3 really need per week, and how to make it last

I was just saying this yesterday...my family is going to have to get used to no snacking and much smaller (recommended on the packet) portion sizes to make things last longer

alloutoffucks · 22/03/2020 10:17

Hand sanitiser would always have run out as most people do not use it.

IndecentFeminist · 22/03/2020 10:18

I think Tesco for example may release more days worth of deliveries later...when I was looking on the app some days just said "this day has been fully booked" or similar, whereas the others showed all the slots as unavailable.

Dongdingdong · 22/03/2020 10:19

This crisis has certainly shown what a nation of selfish gits we really are. Yes there have been many inspiring acts of kindness within local communities. But huge numbers of people are solely out for themselves and don’t give two shits about anyone else.

It’s time to introduce ration cards so people who’ve bought these extra freezers don’t get to use them anyway.
