All to close, restaurants allowed to do takeaway food only, from tonight

The decision will be reviewed each month (I rewound to check he said month) and be updated as we go

Indoor leisure, creates too many loopholes.
What about outdoor events, and festivals, not the big ones like Glastonbury.
I know and work at lots of these smaller ones, with a good 60% of the audiences over 60.
Outdoor catering, a cover for the rain, not a marquee, and there's your weddings, too.
You could argue the social distancing as small numbers.
I hope this isn't the case and this has been thought through.
Don't get me wrong I'd love to carry on, but morally it would be so wrong.
I'm so glad this decision has been made today, even though I've lost my business. I don't have staff, or rates, or any other things where help has been offered. But people are dying, needlessly and our NHS won't cope.

LynetteScavo · 20/03/2020 21:28

No, hairdressers aren't obliged to close.

LynetteScavo · 20/03/2020 21:31

I suspect lots of people live in hotels/b&bs. Closing hotels would cause technically homeless people to literally sleep on the streets.

Iamthewombat · 20/03/2020 22:48

They should close libraries to protect the elderly and staff.

Absolutely. Libraries are full of elderly people. I talked my 87 year old mother, with great difficulty, out of popping to the library to get some books from the ‘recently returned’ trolley. I doubt that the books are disinfected!

covetingthepreciousthings · 20/03/2020 22:52

What does everyone think to businesses finding loopholes in the closures? One of the local pubs here is now operating on a take away basis - so you can order pints of beer and take the outside in disposable
Plastic cups, along with snack boards. Locals have said they'll go along and support - so basically there's no going to be people congregating outside rather than in the pub. I think it's morally irresponsible to not just close, but I can see why they want to try salvage their business.

With the example you have given, I imagine it brings us closer to having discipline enforced by police and troops on the streets., like in Italy, France and Spain. People are fuckwits.

A lot of them will be caught up with the previous announcement that there will be no police or ambulance coverage for events like that

That’s a ban without the words as without that coverage they won’t have licenses

Aw, good, there are people who would exploit the loopholes.
Like I said, terrible for us, but far better to save lives by being responsible. Thanks

Bouncingbomb · 21/03/2020 06:24

My local library is now allowing 30 books at a time with loans until June.

I reckon they will close within days.

@Gfplux are any deliveries being made in Luxembourg? Thinking about here is the Uk where some of us, particularly those of us in rural communities have milk deliveries and can add on things like eggs, cheese and butter if we need to.

I’m just wondering if we go into lockdown which we’re expecting probably as early as Monday, if that will be stopped as well.

Gfplux · 21/03/2020 11:18

@lincolnfield
Auchan Drive (think Tesco order and then pick up) still operating.
The previous 3 to 4 company’s offering limited grocery choice home delivery have now additional company’s operating PLUS the Government (we are a very small country, think county council) are backing one such operation where people who qualify (age and underlying conditions) are targeted.
Take away food is now much more home delivery with doorstep drop off with no contact.
I also know our local Macdo has the drive through open and assume other fast food operations are the same but assume a no contact operation.
Supermarkets. There is absolutely NO STRIPPING OF SHELVES. We did our weekly shop last Monday and it was very calm even with four policemen chatting together (2 meters apart) outside.

The situation with supermarkets now have new “rules” that I have not seen myself.
Only one person from a household, no children. No baskets. The trolleys are inside and a cleaned one is given to each customer. Customers are asked not to browse but perhaps have a list and be focused on what they want. At the check out 2 meter lines on the floor to keep your distance. After you have emptied your trolley I assume it gets cleaned and the system is repeated. Our very large local supermarket chain, CACTUS like Aldi and Liddl do not have self scan so I don’t know wether they are still operating at Auchan and Cora.
I have also heard that if busy not everyone is let in at once. So a line can build up but not very long.
One of our household is due to make the grocery shop on Monday late morning when we will know more.
While we are all nervous and worried for the future I am very happy with the early, strong and clear intervention by the Luxembourg Government and the country’s at our borders.
I can not (but what do I know) agree with the rather late step by step approach by the British Government.
The very large and almost complete shutdown announced by a number of European countries a week or more ago, in my opinion, shocked us into realising how serious this is.

What about hotels? I'm thinking about weddings that have bars and food. Some hotels are closing but some are going ahead. There's no clarity on the matter. Does anyone know?

Also, I'm confused about those who are self employed, again thinking about wedding suppliers. What help are they getting? I know a few but haven't heard from them.

february08baby · 21/03/2020 13:26

They need to go further.

Close non food shops and close garden centres as that's where the elderly like to hang out (the most vulnerable groups). Close bingo halls etc.

Pubs and clubs aren't enough.

IwantToDatePicard · 21/03/2020 13:39

Bingo halls are now closed Sad

I live in Switzerland and everything bar food shops, pharmacies and banks/post offices are closed. Shops which sell more than food have the non-essential items sections sectioned off. The army are drafted in and people are allowed in one or two at a time (depending upon the ship situation). There are often chairs (placed according to regulations) for those waiting. We are not allowed to congregate in groups of more than 5. We can still walk outside and swim in the lake (thankfully I live in a rural area and not a city) but everyone is very respectful and keeps their distance.

There was an initial 1 day shopping panic when the announcements were made, and now everything is pretty much back to normal, bar a few shortages.

Our borders are closed. A lot of us (myself included as a teacher) have been placed on 80% of our salary in an attempt to limit damage to the economy, which most people agree with.

I am honestly aghast at how a) BJ seems to be just making suggestions b) how open to interpretation these suggestions seem to be

Although, out of the many places I have lived, the Swiss do really like to follow rules though... Grin
