All to close, restaurants allowed to do takeaway food only, from tonight

The decision will be reviewed each month (I rewound to check he said month) and be updated as we go

@Lycidas A lot of community run libraries have closed but some are still remaining open for now and aren't included on the list of closures.. hopefully when non essential shops get closed they will.

Nanny0gg · 20/03/2020 18:53

@ineedaholidaynow
Let's hope they cancel HS2, that might help pay for this

We can but hope

They have been interviewing people in their 20s in pubs in London n several news programmes about the announcement. The level of ignorance is astonishing.

One absolutely stupid man was sitting right next to another man claiming he was following all the rules about social distancing - didn't seem to think that applied to his pal next to him or that he might pick the virus up from the table, plate, cutlery and glasses he was touching.

Another was saying 'I just want to support my local and I am going to keep coming for a pint'. The interviewer explained they were being closed and he could not seem to understand what she was saying.

Another was grumbling about how it isn't fair that he has to keep working if they are closing pubs,

Another was such a stupid oaf - grinning at the camera, making deliberately crass remarks that were nothing to do with the question, laughing.

I have had to turn it off, I am so angry. Complete idiots.

OverTheRainbowLiesOz · 20/03/2020 19:07

indoor leisure

Do you think this will include piers?

Lincolnfield · 20/03/2020 19:07

We cheered when we heard this. We’ve been social distancing as much as possible all week. We have three big working retrievers and my husband shoots so we get in the Land Rover, up to the moor, work the dogs (Not shooting, just training at the moment) and then straight home and stay there.

It has been a lovely spring day today and we passed three pubs on the road up to the moor. Every single one was heaving. Car parks were all full and cars running round looking for spaces. We looked at each and both said are they completely bonkers?

Government have tried to get people to act responsibly without success so for anyone who is moaning then seriously they’ve brought it on themselves.

Cheeryandmerry · 20/03/2020 19:08

I wanted to know that AvocadoOwl ..... I swim at an outdoor pool, not part of a gym, members only. I don’t remember the last time I saw someone there.

doghairismyglitter · 20/03/2020 19:23

He did say gyms and nightclubs to close “as soon as reasonably possible” so I’m wondering how many gyms etc will stay open anyway Hmm Can’t believe gyms can stay open during this, I walked past one earlier and it was PACKED! People are insane.

Gfplux · 20/03/2020 19:30

I live in Luxembourg. All non essential shops, bars, clubs and restaurants have been closed for a week. The only shops open are food and pharmacy’s.
The closure also applies to swimming pools and even children’s playgrounds.
You have to have a valid reason to leave home and these are the following.

procurement of food, pharmaceuticals and basic necessities,
acquisition of agricultural, viticultural, horticultural and forestry products,
travel to health facilities,
travel to the workplace for the exercise of professional activity,
assistance and care for the elderly, minors, the dependent, the disabled and the particularly vulnerable,
travel to social security organisations in case of emergency,
travel, in case of emergency, to financial and insurance institutions as well as to postal services,
travel to the commercial and artisanal due to force majeure or a situation of necessity,
outdoor leisure activities on an individual basis or limited to people who live together, without any gathering and subject to respecting an interpersonal distance of two metres.
I am pleased to say we have no panic buying and people in general respect and obey these restrictions.
From my personal emotional experience the shock of the measures when they were announced last week brought home to everyone how very serious this corona virus crisis is.
These restrictions are very similar to France and a number of other European countries.

lyralalala · 20/03/2020 19:31

What about libraries?

Museums and galleries are on the list so I'd expect libraries to be closing as well

Paddingtonthebear · 20/03/2020 19:33

They can close earlier tonight if they want but otherwise they have to close tomorrow. That’s what he said.

What about other businesses? Hairdressers, beauty salons, dog groomers, non-food shops?

Nquartz · 20/03/2020 19:40

Would Home Bargains & B&M count as essential shops, do you think? They sell food, medicines, toiletries, clothes.

Cherrypi · 20/03/2020 19:48

They should close libraries to protect the elderly and staff.

TheTiaraManager · 20/03/2020 19:48

I've felt increasingly emotional each day this week. Even though I've agreed we need extreme actions it's scary when it actually happens.

I have taken so many things for granted, many of us do. I would love to feel safe at the park or soft play tomorrow morning with the DC before going for a family lunch. I would love to see my Mum for lunch on Mother's Day. But we're in a world where none of this is possible just law and we have no idea when it will be again

lyralalala · 20/03/2020 19:50

Other shops are not included yet

OP posts:
TheTiaraManager · 20/03/2020 19:51

Rishi said shops by mistake.

I was surprised hotels were not mentioned. However perhaps they think as hotel restaurants and bars will close that will automatically reduce tourism and hotel stays?

lyralalala · 20/03/2020 19:53

Hotels might be getting kept open because they are being used by some healthcare workers whose families are isolating.

There was also talk about the government requisitioning some so they perhaps need/want them open and staffed while they work out if they do/which ones they want.

We need to make sure this is front and centre of the suggestion box!

lyralalala · 20/03/2020 19:54

Plus tourists who are stuck here - we don't want them just kicked out onto the streets creating another headache or the government to solve

OP posts:
SistemaAddict · 20/03/2020 20:05

happymummy12345 perhaps stopping the non-essential trips to get your non-essential nails and waxing done will help if you are barely getting by?

doghairismyglitter · 20/03/2020 20:12

I’m getting really peeved seeing people having a full on meltdown about not being able to go to the gym or potentially the hairdressers, a light hearted moan: fine, but full on complaining?!
If children have to lose their education for months on end, parents and workers have no jobs for months, self employed and private renters suffering.... why the flipping hell does a hair cut or a work out matter?! Angry

Traintrackmad · 20/03/2020 20:14

Why do people persist in looking for loopholes? The message is clear

I am fed up of childcare/nursery owners trying to get out of shutting on a loophole. Yes, we know it’s going to be crap if they close to all but emergency workers, but it’s the right thing to do to protect the key workers. If a key worker child gets the virus from mixing at their setting, that takes a front line worker (potentially the doctor you need to save you life) away from work for 2 weeks. Their financial impact is far less important than that.

(And I say that as a self employed childminder who stands to loose a substantial amount of money from having to completely close today, as I don’t have any key worker children).

vegansprinkle · 20/03/2020 20:15

@Gfplux similar measures here, and further restrictions announced today. Glad to see the UK is finally starting to catch up.
There has been a great community spirit here, I am blessed to live rurally so we can walk/hike without meeting anyone else. I know friends in the city are not so lucky, and really starting to suffer mentally for it.

HeddaGarbled · 20/03/2020 20:19

Idiot on my local Facebook page urging everyone to come to the pub for a “sesh” tonight 🤷‍♀️

Defenbaker · 20/03/2020 20:27

I'm glad they've done this, some people just weren't taking the guidance on board, this needed to happen.

I find myself imagining a conversation between Bojo and his father, along the lines of:

"Oh no, I can't believe you've done this Boris!"
"Well, Dad, I had to... you just wouldn't listen!!!" Grin

vegansprinkle · 20/03/2020 20:37

Are hairdressers obliged to close?
