Are they closed? He wouldnt be staying in a hotel he would be going straight to the ship.

lyralalala · 20/03/2020 18:08

Do you think they mean gyms in hotels too?. I have a spa/gym membership at a hotel and so far they have been refusing to suspend my membership.

@Lippy1234 They clarified that they mean all indoor exercise spaces, so it will include hotel gyms

But we are borrowing the money. That isn't sustainable for continued services, and it's an investment because keeping jobs and businesses afloat benefits the economy in the long run. Of course schools and hospitals should have been receiving much more funding than they have been; but that's not from this money tree. Also Corbyn wanted to give away loads for free to people who didnt need it, this will mainly benefit people who without it would be in dire straights, and a lot will be low earners.

HoldMyLobster · 20/03/2020 18:09

Do you think they mean gyms in hotels too?

I'd assume so. It's a gym. The hotel can stay open but close its gym, restaurants, etc.

UYScuti · 20/03/2020 18:09

spose it was inevitable :(

LuluJakey1 · 20/03/2020 18:10

On Twitter the communities secretary Robert Jenrick has said the new social distancing measures announced by the Prime Minister will be in place for 14 days then reviewed, and has also provided a definitive list of places that are to close.

These are:

Food & drink venues
Pubs, bars and clubs
Cinemas, theatres, concert and bingo halls
Spas, indoor leisure and gyms
Casinos & betting shops
Museums & galleries

Bit more clarity thete.

Inkpaperstars · 20/03/2020 18:11

Any additional measures will take at least 28 days to have any impact and that is only if we all follow them.

That's the terrifying thing, all the people getting infected now and in recent weeks are about to flood the health service, and it is already full.

Lippy1234 · 20/03/2020 18:12

Thank you

Lipz · 20/03/2020 18:12

All ours have been closed for a week now. Ireland. You will get the odd chipper open but that's it, no Chinese takeaways etc. Cafe's , restaurants, pubs all closed, mc Donald's sit in eating closed. Penny's / primark closed this week with arnotts and a couple other big department stores. There are some non grocery shops open but they've cut opening times. We didn't lock down all at once, it's like each week something closes. Maybe they're easing us into a lock down. Supermarkets have become really strict, limiting amount of items you buy, no children in supermarkets, no cash only card payments, morning shopping for elderly only, chemists/pharmacies you have to ring in prescriptions and then arrange to collect. Buses are cutting hours from next week, you have to do social distancing on these, it's hard because we wouldn't have as many buses as the uk and we don't have tubes etc so we really depend in our limited bus service. So the queues for buses is mental as still alot of people still working.

TheLastSaola · 20/03/2020 18:16

To stop transmission the most important thing is to stock people gathering together. Most shops have been ghost towns so they haven't been hotbeds of transmission.

I suspect with schools closing that will change, so inevitably shops will close as well. Definitely large shopping centres.

FizzyPink · 20/03/2020 18:18

Could someone explain how printing extra money works. DP asked me last night why we can’t just print more money and I know you can’t just do this as it’ll have an effect on the economy but I wasn’t sure why.

Lamentations · 20/03/2020 18:18

Easing in is sensible. We panic over the unexpected but not the expected. Giving us a couple of days to talk about what will be next to close makes it much easier to accept when it happens.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 20/03/2020 18:19

Good. OH has been to the pub three times this week and is there now. He had a go at me when I suggested he shouldn't be.

Ihateselfishbastards · 20/03/2020 18:21

Now let’s deal with the hoarding twats!

notimagain · 20/03/2020 18:22

Does anyone know or have heard anything about flights outside the country ? My husband is marine engineer and needs to fly to holland to get to work, is that classed as essential travel

Only just skim read the announcement - can't see this is a "lockdown" in the European sense so can't see a ban on travel ATM to airports ( and generally as it stands in most places even under lockdown if you cannot "tele work" you are allowed to travel to work). I can see no mention of flights being stopped by the UK authorities, suspect that is someway off.

Much bigger issue is whether the airline is still operating as scheduled or not, and also potential restrictions on entry to the Netherlands now or in the suture is another matter.

Devlesko · 20/03/2020 18:22

we have lost everything too, and unsure yet whether we will fall into any of the "in need" categories.
I am applying for jobs as it will take years to build our business back up again.
No theatres, no tours, no pubs, restaurants or weddings.
Entertainers and Musicians aren't even members of staff, so have no income.
We are ok though, and will struggle through the same as others.
I'm consoling myself with the fact that people who live hand to mouth are royally screwed. I can't complain.

jimmyjammy001 · 20/03/2020 18:34

Agree it is the right thing to do by giving everyone 80% wages, but the Austeriy that will come out of this to pay all that money back will make the last 10 years look amazing, vital public services after all this is over will suffer big time, I don't know how they can possibly strip it back anymore than what it is. Something will have to give somewhere. It's not going to be pritty.

evilharpy · 20/03/2020 18:37

It can't be just the UK though. What measures have other countries put in place?

What about the US where employment rights are worse than here?

GabsAlot · 20/03/2020 18:38

its not all shops rishi said shops by mistake

AlexaAmbidextra · 20/03/2020 18:40

What about hotels?

I can’t find a specific mention of hotels but I should think that many will close if they can’t provide food. I had a UK hotel booking for next week which unsurprisingly, has just been cancelled as they’re closing the whole premises.

ineedaholidaynow · 20/03/2020 18:40

Let's hope they cancel HS2, that might help pay for this

cinammonbuns · 20/03/2020 18:40

@Turnedouttoes causes inflation because if everyone has more money businesses raise their price to reflect that which can turn into hyperinflation which eventually makes money worthless

FizzyPink · 20/03/2020 18:46

Thank you @cinammonbuns

I’m also curious to hear about hotels. I know DP has spent a lot of money on a weekend away for my birthday at Easter and I checked tripadvisor after I accidentally found out about it and the last couple of reviews are people complaining they had to cancel and the hotel refused. Really hope he gets his money back as he’s self employed and so won’t be eligible for any help but also can’t work until leisure facilities reopen

AvocadoOwl · 20/03/2020 18:48

What about more outdoorsy leisure venues? Golf clubs, riding schools, sailing clubs?

(Yes I know, no non-essential anything, I'm just curious as to whether they are still allowed to be open).

Lycidas · 20/03/2020 18:50

What about libraries?
