Does anyone know if non food shops are included in this?

VivaLeBeaver · 20/03/2020 17:33

I think he said non food shops as well.

Bouncingbomb · 20/03/2020 17:34

I think it’s a robust response and I am not a Tory voter.

BertieDrapper · 20/03/2020 17:34

I was pretty awestruck watching it.

But I am wondering where all this money has been the past few years with so many schools lacking in basic supplies, no pay rises for nurses etc and so many vulnerable left with no support.
Just goes to show they can pull
Money out their backside when they want to.

I really hope this helps a lot if people.

Paddingtonthebear · 20/03/2020 17:34

This chancellor is def the next PM

VivaLeBeaver · 20/03/2020 17:36

They’re asking him to clarify about shops now.

Doesn’t sound like it is shops. But so much fucking waffle, just say yes or no.

crazydiamond222 · 20/03/2020 17:36

I am looking forward to seeing the reaction of Tim Martin.

VivaLeBeaver · 20/03/2020 17:37

It is areas where people gather for social purposes.

So I’m guessing not shops.

ilovesooty · 20/03/2020 17:37

The measures aren't going to do anything for those on zero hour contracts are they?

everythingisginandroses · 20/03/2020 17:37

CraicMammy, I'm a Labour Party member too, but I agree the right things are being done here. I am hoping (probably in vain) that Tim Martin will now keep his fat, greedy gob shut, since the govt are going to pay his staff's wages!

everythingisginandroses · 20/03/2020 17:38

In fact, can the chancellor issue an order closing Tim Martin's gob forthwith? Grin

NotDisclosedToday · 20/03/2020 17:40

How about shutting religous gatherings? Some have hundreds of people in very close vicinity, or are they too scared?

shartsi · 20/03/2020 17:41

Its about the magic money forest being shaken at the right time. Corbyn was prematurely and unnecessarily shaking it.

QueQueQue · 20/03/2020 17:41

Already been done

Marieo · 20/03/2020 17:42

@ilovesooty they can claim UC straight away without having to wait the 6 weeks.

Springbubble912 · 20/03/2020 17:42

There isn’t a magic money tree - taxes can only increase when this is fixed

lyralalala · 20/03/2020 17:42

Most of them have already done so have they not?

CofE have no services and 5 people at weddings. RC are having no services. Jehovah's Witnesses cancelled their assembly and weekly meetings. The mosque here is shut except for those staffing the foodbank, I assume that's similar everywhere.

Sorry that was in answer to @NotDisclosed

lyralalala · 20/03/2020 17:43

It's not a magic money tree. They've raided the war cabinet.

happymummy12345 · 20/03/2020 17:46

@ilovesooty I completely agree. My husband is a chef on a zero hour contract. I've posted in so many threads already it's all well and good saying stay away and now closing restaurants but people like him rely on customers walking though the door to pay their wages. As it is he's lost hours due to work not being busy. Now with only deliveries im worried it will get worse. Less hours means less pay. I'm a SAHM so we rely on his income to survive and tbh only just get by as it is. This will not help is at all. As you say it's no help to a lot of people. Close them completely if they really want to help but they won't.

SapphosRock · 20/03/2020 17:46

Glad they've done this.

Still unclear about swimming pools? If it's not tied to a leisure centre can it stay open?

Also playgrounds. It's going to be impossible to keep kids 2m apart. I suspect with the absence of other things to do they will be packed.

LightACandleHoney · 20/03/2020 17:46

About time!

I believe that people will look back at how businesses/schools/organisations/politicians responded to this crisis and judge them for it with their custom/loyalty once life goes back to normal.

I work in a school, my 4 DC are in 3 different schools - the youngest two in primary. This has definitely opened my eyes to where I’d be wanting them to go in a few years’ time.

Similarly with businesses - I want to support the local businesses who are doing everything they can to keep their businesses afloat and provide their services while still keeping their staff and customers safe.

The businesses however who will only close now because they’ve been forced to, and who have been reckless until now, will lose my business going forward. I for one am delighted that our local leisure centre are finally being forced to close - their actions thus far include telling people to bring a towel to wipe down gym equipment after use! Hmm

happymummy12345 · 20/03/2020 17:47

What about those already on universal credit? It's not enough for us to live on without my husbands full time wage.

TonTonMacoute · 20/03/2020 17:48

And it appears there is a Magic Money Tree.

No, there isn't. We will all be paying for this for a long time to come.

It is the right thing to do though.

@BertieDrapper if the government had spent the money on those things it wouldn’t be here for this unprecedented emergency situation.
