All to close, restaurants allowed to do takeaway food only, from tonight

The decision will be reviewed each month (I rewound to check he said month) and be updated as we go

Really he should call a total lockdown. To stop the idiots. I'm prepared to put up with that, to make others obey the rules!

I think closing things today and saying that they will be reviewed monthly will shock a lot of people

Then they can see how people heed it over the weekend and take more measures

For whatever reason they are determinedly taking small steps at a time

Perhaps (rather late) set of closures will wake up the millions who have not been taking this crisis seriously.
If these measures had been put in place at the beginning of the week the cascade effect would already be working.
What has happened is Britain has had five days of many people gathering together thinking the crisis had nothing to do with them.
Doing the right thing too late does mean Johnson is not guilty of incompetence.

I suspect he will in a couple of days. Every day or two it ramps up.

LuluJakey1 · 20/03/2020 17:59

DH's cousin has just texted to say he is in the pub for a 'last hurrah' tonight! Unbelievable!

february08baby · 20/03/2020 17:59

to everyone saying there is a "magic money tree"

There was always money set aside for war, and we are at war A labour government would have a similar fund but would they have allocated the funding in a similar way?

covetingthepreciousthings · 20/03/2020 17:59

Does anyone know in other countries, how long the gap was between cafes closing to non essential shops closing? Was it's days? Or more?

Bargebill19 · 20/03/2020 17:59

Fingers crossed this not only works money wise, but it also get the message across regarding social distancing and social isolation.

LuluJakey1 · 20/03/2020 18:00

Any additional measures will take at least 28 days to have any impact and that is only if we all follow them.

Nquartz · 20/03/2020 18:00

Britannia hotels have been offered up as additional hospital accommodation

Gfplux · 20/03/2020 18:01

Not including beauty salons, hairdressers and barbers is a criminal error.

RiftGibbon · 20/03/2020 18:01

Just walked past the pub as I was dripping food to a friend in isolation. Pub full of teens. Idiots.

hellsbells99 · 20/03/2020 18:01

They said they will pay wages if staff are temporarily stood down, but what about if they put you on reduced hours?

userxx · 20/03/2020 18:02

Britannia hotels have been offered up as additional hospital accommodation

Probably trying to make up for yesterday's cockup.

StarUtopia · 20/03/2020 18:03

My husband was laid off - but from an agency as the company he was working for lost a big contact (because of cover-19)

I still don't think he's covered :(

Gfplux · 20/03/2020 18:03

“Does anyone know in other countries, how long the gap was between cafes closing to non essential shops closing? Was it's days? Or more?”

Most other European countries announced everything closing at once,

Oysterbabe · 20/03/2020 18:04

Domino's is OK. We'll get through this.

Rosehip10 · 20/03/2020 18:04

Why are non essential non closing? So people will still be able to hang around large shopping places like westfield, "taking out" food and sittin on benches.

NeWmAmA84 · 20/03/2020 18:04

This was a decision that was forced and not made because Boris has sense. The action of social distancing (e.g shutting non essential places) should have been made weeks ago.

Lippy1234 · 20/03/2020 18:05

Do you think they mean gyms in hotels too?. I have a spa/gym membership at a hotel and so far they have been refusing to suspend my membership.

Gwynfluff · 20/03/2020 18:05

Marieo the money tree sneering is because when the conservatives introduced austerity measures they said there was no magic money tree. Turns out there is after all

LettuceP · 20/03/2020 18:05

Both me and dh work in the same restaurant. I cannot explain how relieved I am by today's announcement, I burst into tears. We will be able to feed our kids, pay our mortgage, won't have to rely on the shit show that is universal credit.

All of us in the industry have been waiting and praying for this announcement. We didn't want to keep putting our health at risk unnecessarily and encouraging people to come out and spread the virus but we had no choice.

I feel like a huge weight has just been lifted from my shoulders and I am so grateful to this government right now.

Omashu · 20/03/2020 18:06

Finally!

covetingthepreciousthings · 20/03/2020 18:06

Most other European countries announced everything closing at once,

This would make more sense..
Hope they close the non essential businesses tomorrow. It's ridiculous if they don't.

Iamthewombat · 20/03/2020 18:06

But I am wondering where all this money has been the past few years

It’s been in a giant piggy bank in 11 Downing Street. Christ!

Just goes to show they can pull Money out their backside when they want to.

It’s funded by borrowing and printing money and it will have to be paid back. Remember that when you hear people moaning that it’s not fair that they can’t retire at 60, and why can’t the government just find £31 Bn to make it happen, and why can’t all the medics have a 10% pay rise and why do we have to pay so much tax etc etc.

february08baby · 20/03/2020 18:07

@Gwynfluff

FFS its the emergency war fund they are using. Are you really that stupid? Labour had one too!
