A ruined economy will kill more people than covid19

Absolutely, which is why I feel the entire response is an overreaction. If people are vulnerable, it is their own responsibility to isolate themselves until this is over. The rest of us need to practice good hand hygiene and keep away from vulnerable people.

Ruining the economy and countless businesses, destroying families (divorce rates will go up and people will lose their homes) and damaging children’s education is just not worth it, in my opinion.

I do not want to see anyone die from this. I want vulnerable people to recognise that they are at risk and take responsibility for themselves.

Canceling large sporting events and social gatherings is probably a good thing in the meantime. Closing schools was a very poor decision in my opinion.

As for Boris - what do people want exactly? They don’t want him as PM of course and therefore nothing he can say is acceptable to them.

SpokeTooSoon · 19/03/2020 19:07

It's going to be odd that teacher's kids will need to go into their schools while they go into other schools to look after other kids

It’s what most teachers’ children do every day, surely?

Keepcalmanddoyourbit · 19/03/2020 19:07

@SpokeTooSoon Have you seen what's been going on in Italy by any chance Hmm

He's useless, says a lot about how crap Eton and Oxford were in the 1970s and 1980s. They should be held to account. As should that awful father of his.

Keepcalmanddoyourbit · 19/03/2020 19:08

@SpokeTooSoon No. Teachers are going into schools to care for children of key workers not educate them....they will be providing childcare.

My husband lost his job today, our nursery are expecting full fees paid and I work in the hospitality industry but we won’t starve, our mortgage and bills can be paid and in 6 months time I hope my husband will have new employment so I’m going to enjoy having a stay at home parent for a bit and will support my staff as much as possible because there are others in much worse position than me,

kateandme · 19/03/2020 19:08

becasue it comes from a place of knowing he will always be fucking ok.becasue he is sitting on enough money not to have to worry.so when shit hits the fan he will be ok.
so deep down in himself he always has the cosy feeling of im allright jack

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2020 19:09

It wasn’t great

He’ll feel it more when the numbers rocket

butterpuffed · 19/03/2020 19:09

Op knows how to cause trouble.

PerkingFaintly · 19/03/2020 19:10

He’s a mouthpiece

I despair.Sad

No, he's not a mouthpiece. He's the Prime Minister.

His job is to lead. He should take advice from advisors, but it's his job to make decisions and visibly show leadership.

The fact that you even found yourself uttering "he's a mouthpiece" like that should give you pause.

NanSlayer · 19/03/2020 19:12

I hope next press conference Boris has a breakdown and starts crying.
Sits in the Fetal position.
Then pisses himself.

Because that would sum up the UK position at the moment.

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2020 19:13

Oh god Nan I did laugh

SpokeTooSoon · 19/03/2020 19:13

Have you seen what's been going on in Italy by any chance

Yes. They said today that 99% of Covid deaths in Italy were people with existing illnesses. People who should have been isolated long ago.

Redbonnie · 19/03/2020 19:14

Spoke too soon... My 63 year old MIL has asthma and is recovering from chemo. She works in a busy retail environment. Under the current Govt guidelines she cannot choose to self isolate and take responsibility for her own health. If she stayed away from work now she would lose her job and have no income until she is 66. She is being forced to play Covid roulette. It is not a matter of choice for the vulnerable.

LittleYorkshireLass · 19/03/2020 19:14

@Keepcalmanddoyourbit littleyorkshirelass Calm down.........

ODFOD, and bore off with this patronising, condescending bollocks. 'Calm down' is said by the most irksome of people who don't like the fact they are being challenged. Don't post ludicrous shit, and then cry off and say people need to CALM DOWN when you are challenged on your ridiculous words.

Keepcalmanddoyourbit · 19/03/2020 19:15

@NanSlayer That comes before each press conference and his master [Cummings] has to persuade him to come out the bathroom

The one saving grace I thought there might be about Johnson in this cataclysm is that, unlike Trump, he's aware the work does need to be done and (being lazy) has long relied on bringing in people who will do the donkey-work.

But that doesn't take away from the fact that he does actually need to take decisions, make sure stuff gets done, and show leadership.

I actually think he might retire under some excuse soon.

Look at his previous behaviour. He campaigned for Brexit; skedaddled as soon as it became real, dumping the hot potato in someone else's lap; then swanned back in when much of the hard work was done, to capitalise on the situation he'd caused.

Then he turned on a sixpence from "Get Brexit Done" to "People are bored with Brexit, don't talk about it," to distract from the delay and the inevitable failures to meet expectations.

He has zero appetite for hard work or taking responsibility. I reckon he'll stage a little health crisis and go rest in the country, leaving some other poor fucker carrying the can until the hard parts are over. Then he'll oil back in and act the hero.

Keepcalmanddoyourbit · 19/03/2020 19:15

Sadly, I don't know which of this shower would be any better.

Although people seem to be saying good things of Sunak. And, you know, Javid's at a loose end...

VideographybyLouBloom · 19/03/2020 19:18

Typical fucking mumsnet. Anyone who believes Jeremy Corbyn would smash this crisis needs their bumps felt

Keepcalmanddoyourbit · 19/03/2020 19:18

Oh what a fucking relief. Stop panicking everyone..... it''s only the old and sick who are copping it. [only it isnt is it]

You do know that a LARGE proportion of the population is on the "existing illness" list? It wouldn't be "business as usual" for everyone else if they all disappeared from the labour force for 18 months.

Plus - even people without existing illnesses are getting very ill and suffering effects which may be lifelong.

Giraffe50 · 19/03/2020 19:22

I think he is doing a great job. His policies are based on advice from the medical experts who flank him. My view is we stay calm, heed the advice and trust the advice. Think months not weeks.

Alsohuman · 19/03/2020 19:22

*My family member in China reading this thread would say he should do what we have done in China, lockdown now, weld shut steel doors, use an iron fist and stop being so charitable about the british public.

Would that be a preferable option for those complaining about our government?*

Yes.
