Totally out of his fucking depth

OP posts:

And there should have been talks with online food delivery firms about prioritising those self isolating for 12 weeks.
So much of this stuff could be predicted, nothing was done.
Maintaining food supply is a very basic function of government.

In my local news care homes were saying they were having difficulty getting enough food.

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2020 08:41

They are too late and so are supermarkets.

Just limit all key items. Open for key workers and at risk only for set hours.

alloutoffucks · 20/03/2020 08:46

@Clavinova I had no idea that only 7% of food shopping was online. Then this situation was entirely predictable for those being asked to self isolate for 12 weeks. Basically people are being asked to do something that is impossible.

Clavinova · 20/03/2020 08:48

Boris Johnson seems pretty busy to me;

alloutoffucks · 20/03/2020 08:49

Marsha yes. But I do blame government. Supermarkets job is to make money. It is the governments job to maintain food supply and to make sure that people can actually follow what the government are asking them to do.

alloutoffucks · 20/03/2020 08:52

@Clavinova I don't give a shit how busy he is. This is his job. He fought to get it.

By the way my DP is really busy as well because of CV. Was working till 10.30 pm last night at home for no extra pay and earns way way below what Boris does. So cry me river.

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2020 08:53

All I want the govt to mandate too

Marieo · 20/03/2020 08:54

He still only has so many hours in the day, he can't magic more time to do everything that needs to be done.

Clavinova · 20/03/2020 08:56

Basically people are being asked to do something that is impossible.

I think impossible is the wrong approach. Do you have any elderly neighbours you can help? You appear to have a lot of time on your hands.

Clavinova · 20/03/2020 08:59

I don't give a shit how busy he is.

I know you don't - it doesn't suit the false narrative you are peddling:
"part-time PM", "Boris doesn't work weekends" ...

Crackerofdoom · 20/03/2020 09:00

The most important word in all this is panic.

We are in Austria and have been in lockdown for a week. Supermarkerts are open and with the exception of a few specific items (loo roll of course) there is no shortage of food.

I went to my supermarket down the road and it was almost empty of people but well-stocked.

I am not saying the politicians here are perfect but the way it has been handled was so much better.

Schools were closed incrementally, starting with the older kids who wouldn't need childcare. All schools are open for parents who can't WFH (not just key workers) but DS's school has only 5 kids attending (3 from the same family where both parents are doctors). Nurseries were the last thing to close and again, are open to anyone who can't WFH.

We got a week's notice of the first closures and 10 days of the closures for kids up to age 14. The last 2 days were made voluntary so people could keep kids home if they could but people weren't screwed.

Of course people here are going to lose jobs and it is a shitty situation, but there have been no false promises, no U turns, no dropping things on us at the last minute. We are only 1 week into a 4 week lockdown and we are already being told to prepare for it to be longer. I feel I am informed, that there is a plan, and we are privy to it. The UK has easier borders to control (we border 7 countries here) and had more notice of what was coming than most European countries.

Britain has been divided for the last 4 years with Brexit and this crisis is deepening the divisions and the feeling of 'otherness' about people not in your circle.

It is the government's job to give confidence and gain trust. There is no trust in the UK that the government or anyone else will look after you, hence the panic.

BoJo needs to gain the trust of the people to calm the fear which is causing most of the current problems.

With so many disbelieving every word he says after Brexit, he has an uphill battle.

Personally, I don't think he is the man for the job but he is who you've got so I am really hoping he has hidden depths.

Clavinova · 20/03/2020 09:15

Crackerofdoom
Pretty sure when I visited Austria some years ago the supermarkets had limited opening hours compared to the UK - closed Saturday afternoons, all day Sunday etc - is that still the case?

Happygirl79 · 20/03/2020 09:15

I think yesterday's announcement was a total waste of time for everyone and simply lip service. Boris looked bored and really told us nothing new.
I think they have deliberately saved the real 'news' for today to coincidence with schools closing. Parents will be really anxious. So we will probably hear about financial help for stay at home mums and individuals losing their jobs. Possibly a one off payment to all to soften the blow. This can help people pay bills or be spent otherwise to aid our ailing economy
The government will want to finish the week on a high for maximum impact
Keep safe and sane everyone

alloutoffucks · 20/03/2020 09:21

@Clavinova Have you missed that I am in a very high risk group and should be staying in the house but I am having to go out every day to buy food because there is so little? The very last thing I should be doing is going anywhere near other vulnerable people. And I have time on my hands because I am self isolating as much as I can. I am wfh for some hours, but I would normally work more hours. I can't because of self isolating.

Crackerofdoom · 20/03/2020 09:24

@Clavinova
Yes we are still closed on Sundays and Saturdays from about 6pm.

So people here are used to planning ahead too which may help

ChillinInMyBacta · 20/03/2020 09:24

Could be worse. Could be in America with Trump promising miracle overnight cures and patting himself on the back. I'll take BoJo & ScoMo despite their slow response and poor messaging.

Oh, and a lot of the problems in Australia are being caused by a bout 1,500 Daigou personal shoppers being paid to buy items to be sold back to Asia as well as the usual local criminal scum trying to make a profit now the drug money isn't flowing as fast.

alloutoffucks · 20/03/2020 09:25

@Clavinova Now you are lying. I have never used any of those phrases you are quoting that I have said. Please stop lying.

alloutoffucks · 20/03/2020 09:28

Actually the lies Clavinova just reinforces that you are not here posting in good faith. People like me are panicking that we could die and leave our kids without a parent. I want to do the right thing. But I need things in place to do that.

Clavinova · 20/03/2020 09:33

alloutoffucks
Then perhaps you should call on a friend, neighbour, colleague, church, local group for help? If you are confident of being paid by your employer (or you have savings/a pension income) then you could look at a slightly more expensive food provider such as HelloFresh.

alloutoffucks · 20/03/2020 09:40

Clavinova my DP has been going to work. From tonight none of us are going out except for walks in quiet places. That is to protect me. Volunteers locally are helping people who have to self isolate. I have asked them to help us starting from next week.

I am worried though that because food supply seems to be particularly bad where I live, that volunteers won't have the stamina for daily shopping and delivering for everyone who needs it. It is a fairly huge undertaking. A friend has offered to drive from 30 miles away to deliver food. My other 2 friends I could rely on is 1 who is also self isolating and another who is a HCP and working very long hours at the moment. I really don't want to put more pressure on her than normal.

I am not sure you understand how scary a time this is for people like me. Worries about not getting food just adds to this. And I actually have more support than many people do.

alloutoffucks · 20/03/2020 09:43

So just in my street there is me, my neighbour who is in his seventies and directly across the road a woman in her eighties and a man in his 70's. That is in the space of about 8 houses. Maybe were I live is unusual? But there is a lot of people here who need help. And 12 weeks is a long time.

ChillinInMyBacta · 20/03/2020 09:44

150,000 should read.

Clavinova · 20/03/2020 09:59

alloutoffucks
I apologise - I was quoting general sentiments about Boris Johnson being a part-time prime minister - not specific to you.

Your quote was; "Yes it is Boris's "Kill a Granny Scheme."

How are the elderly and vulnerable getting food in other European countries if they are self isolating? I doubt that online grocery shopping is more popular in France than the UK?

DioneTheDiabolist · 20/03/2020 10:11

Clav, articles from 11th of march are out of date now.

alloutoffucks · 20/03/2020 10:19

Yes I did say that quote days ago when all we were being told to do is wash our hands. Things have changed now.
Thanks for the apology, but it is disingenous to post the one small quote I have said that was derogatory towards the PM and posted days ago, as if I am constantly saying stuff like that.

I am guessing it is harder to throw personal insults at me as I have voted conservative at times, I am a classic floating voter, so you can't throw the Corbyn thing at me. And I have also repeatedly said I would have preferred Theresa May to be PM at the moment. So you can't throw the usual lazy stereotypes of lefty loving Corbyn at me.
