And in the background of that article a photo with a full shelf.

Photo from the same newspaper a few days earlier;

Heygirlheyboy · 20/03/2020 08:01

I'm not sure if people have seen the Irish Taoiseach's speech? I'm not a big fan but that's what leadership and statesmanship is.

alloutoffucks · 20/03/2020 08:01

Anyway I will leave the usual suspects to the constant refrain of Boris si great, everything he does is great.

But with the internet people now have easy contact with family and friends all round the world. We can easily talk to people abroad. So we know ourselves what is happening. My family and friends abroad have been horrified how difficult it has been for me to buy ordinary items. Forget toilet paper, I haven't seen that for 2 weeks. But sanitary stuff, fresh fruit and veg, any meat except bacon, tomato puree, have all been hard to get. I had a friend post on face book worried as she could not find tampons anywhere.

nowmorethanever · 20/03/2020 08:03

@MarshaBradyo I’m Aussie actually Grin No fights in supermarkets where my family are but it’s hard to get stuff.

Apparently organised gangs are buying up food and the government has pledged to stop it?

The news items here were more about the long queues and crowds in the UK. We have plenty of bare shelves here (mainland Europe) but no queues. Home delivery slots are booked up a week in advance. It’s definitely not ‘business as usual’ but the UK situation was still noteworthy enough to make the news.

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2020 08:03

He’s making mistakes, but it’s still worth seeing if the pattern is elsewhere.

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2020 08:04

Now as I said you have loo roll shortage which is where we started. Food happened later. You may or may not.

nowmorethanever · 20/03/2020 08:05

On gangs doing shopping:

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2020 08:06

All yes that’s the point I’m Australian and have family there so we hear about it. It’s not just you.

alloutoffucks · 20/03/2020 08:06

@Clavinova Have you read that article? They have put limits on buying of rice, flour, toilet paper and hand sanitiser to stop stockpiling. They are the only things that are hard to get. Limits should have been put on foods in the UK way way earlier.

It should also have been obvious that telling people to self isolate for 12 weeks would cause stockpiling. Things should have been put in place before saying that.

Hyrana · 20/03/2020 08:09

If you want to see how a politician should be conducting themselves in this situation, look at Nicola Sturgeon. She has been measured, compassionate and firm, and has clearly explained what decisions are being taken. I wish the UK at large had watched her and her Health Secretary in the Scottish Parliament a couple of days ago, and the emphatic way they said this is not a time for party politics; and the leader of the Scottish Tories, to be fair, was equally emphatic that we are all to be working together on this. They had a civilised exchange of clear questions and answers.

I'm Scottish but not there at the moment and although I'm generally not a fan of the SNP and Nicola Sturgeon I have to agree with this 100% The way leaders from other countries are stepping up and dealing with it puts BoJo to shame. I am proud of Nicola Sturgeon!

alloutoffucks · 20/03/2020 08:10

Home delivery slots being booked up a week in advance would be a dream. Here it is over a month until I could get an online shop. We are all supposed to be self isolating. I thought we would all stay in the house except for walks somewhere quiet. Instead I ma having to go out to the shops every day. I am under no illusion that this puts us at risk.

I had envisaged shopping online. We would starve if we relied on that. Excuse it all you want it is shit.

alloutoffucks · 20/03/2020 08:14

So if I was in charge I would ask for people with admin skills and DBS to volunteer t sort this out. I would then ask all self isolating people to choose one supermarket and send that name to a volunteer. Then ask volunteers to check with GPs these people should be self isolating, then contact supermarkets saying only these people should get a weekly online slot. If there are extra left release them. But these people first. But you limit number of items self isolating people can buy.
That would help people self isolate. It is bloody ridiculous that people who should be staying at home are being forced to go out to crowded shops every day.

Clavinova · 20/03/2020 08:15

Clavinova Have you read that article? They have put limits on buying of rice, flour, toilet paper and hand sanitiser to stop stockpiling.

I'm not sure you have read the article properly - individual store groups have imposed limits;

^"Coles and Woolworths have introduced a limit on some goods to ensure there is enough for everyone.

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2020 08:15

Govt should mandate limits on items

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2020 08:16

Thankfully some are here - Sainsbury’s - But not enough items

alloutoffucks · 20/03/2020 08:16

clavinova Yes I know it is store limits.

Clavinova · 20/03/2020 08:24

I had envisaged shopping online.

"One of the fastest growing channels in the UK grocery market, the online grocery sector is still adding to its share of total grocery retail sales, up from 6.1% in 2016 to 7% in 2018."

7% is not a lot is it.

Clavinova · 20/03/2020 08:25

clavinova Yes I know it is store limits

Blame Sainsbury's then.

lovelyupnorth · 20/03/2020 08:26

@GoosetheCat

but which government cut all the pandemic planning that had been going on -let's just say the current PM was part of it.

And no JC would have been just as much of a cluster fuck.

But Boris's ability to cock things up knows no bounds..........

We couldn't go into full lockdown if they need us too as we don't have the troops or police or state resources to manage it.

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2020 08:26

A nurse in R4 crying after a 14 hour shift when there was no food set me off. Govt MP saying ‘what might need to be done’. If we don’t take personal responsibility.

Just do something about it now. Everything is vaguely soon people are in trouble now.

Alsohuman · 20/03/2020 08:35

Clavinova, for Christ’s sake stop defending the indefensible. Maintenance of the food supply in a national emergency should be the government’s responsibility.

Clavinova · 20/03/2020 08:35

German scientists must have been using similar modelling to the UK -

Angela Merkel 10th March:

"Up to 70 per cent of the population is likely to be infected with coronavirus, Angela Merkel has warned."

"The German chancellor told a news conference on Wednesday that the fight against the virus was about “winning time” as she cited experts who have warned a large number of people will be affected by the outbreak."

“When the virus is out there, the population has no immunity and no therapy exists, then 60 to 70 per cent of the population will be infected,” Ms Merkel said."

“The process has to be focused on not overburdening the health system by slowing the virus's spread...It's about winning time.”

"However, Ms Merkel said her government did not have any plans to close its borders over the epidemic in Europe and argued people arriving from badly-hit regions should quarantine themselves at home instead."

What I don’t get is why there are so many parents scaring the shit out of their kids by saying they’re not going to see their friends again and that they won’t be back at school till September.
NOBODY knows that so stop saying it !!

Clavinova · 20/03/2020 08:38

I was responding to: "Clavinova Have you read that article?" I did read the article - what did I miss from that particular article?

alloutoffucks · 20/03/2020 08:38

@Clavinova So it is impossible for a PM to see that there is an issue online and talk to supermarkets to get them to put in limits on buying? This should have been done when the toilet paper hoarding started.

It is all too little too late.
