Anyone else's Parents swanning about as if they are immortal?

Just had a chat with my Mum, she then asked if I want anything from B&Q as they are popping in there tomorrow! This is after they went shopping to Sainsburys this morning and then said they are going again on Friday.

I have said I will get any shopping they need, but they keep going out.

FFS they are both over 70 and my Dad will die if he gets the virus. They are not taking it seriously at all.

My PILs are self isolating but they do that regularly anyway. I’m sure they only leave the house to go shopping once a week as it is so doubt they’ll know the difference Grin

Anyone still trying to channel the blitz spirit, show them this.

Tonyaster · 19/03/2020 15:40

I think there is plenty of contemporary evidence and source material about the war. The idea of "blitz spirit" isn't all "misremebering" how patronising!

Devlesko · 19/03/2020 15:40

I think if they don't listen, you need to double check where their will is kept, any special things they want at their funeral, maybe ask them about hymns.
That should do it.You'd hate to get anything wrong so you need to talk about their preferences.

What if the person coughing doesn’t cover their mouth? Dear Lord what a cavalier attitude to peoples lives some people are having

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2020 15:41

Blitz spirit - Such an effective way to get people to die whilst wanting to do it.

LovePoppy · 19/03/2020 15:41

I’m pretty sure the only people employing “blitz Spirit“ are the ones who are actually self isolating for the good of those in the more vulnerable age groups.

EachandEveryone · 19/03/2020 15:43

My mum and her dp both 71 and as fit as fiddles. Walked to their local high street today and went to Sainsburys and the betting shop. And she bumped in to two people she hadnt seen in ages so two twebty minute convos there. Shes an ex nurse and just wants to put her uniform back on and go and see to her two 90 year old neighbours.

Borisdaspide · 19/03/2020 15:43

You think, or you know? You know those Keep Calm and Carry On posters were a raging failure, dont you?

Tonyaster · 19/03/2020 15:45

Yes, all the people I know are doing as they are told - practicing social distancing, and self isolating if they are a vulnerable group. The elderly in my village were very happy that Sainsbury's was doing an elderly hour for shopping this morning but apparently it was over run with pushy aggressive 30 something mums with kids in buggies. So it's not the 70+ that are being twats.

LovePoppy · 19/03/2020 15:47

So it's not the 70+ that are being twats.

It’s not just the 70+

No one said it was.

In my area, that first hour is for vulnerable shoppers. You don’t know what those families are dealing with.

Duchessofblandings · 19/03/2020 15:48

Most supermarkets are opening early not just for the elderly but did the vulnerable, so people with medical conditions, learning difficulties, etc. Many of these will be younger but much less healthy than a lot of 70 year olds. No one vulnerable group is more or less deserving than another,

Tonyaster · 19/03/2020 15:48

It's elderly here. Or supposed to be. Not gobby mums wanting to add to their loo roll collection.

Tonyaster · 19/03/2020 15:49

People with learning difficulties are not more at risk from Coronavirus!

PleaseStopCrying · 19/03/2020 15:51

So it's not the 70+ that are being twats

No one has ever said it was just the over 70s but im sure I'm not the only one frustrated at their cavalier attitudes. Its also very annoying being stuck inside whilst watching lots of elderly people walk past heading into the direction of the shops.

Duchessofblandings · 19/03/2020 15:51

Not sure where you are, Tonyaster, but I believe Sainsbury’s policy is countrywide

Booths and Sainsbury’s have joined Iceland in introducing special opening times for elderly and vulnerable people in response to panic-buying resulting from the coronavirus crisis.”

(Altrincham Times)

Perhaps you misunderstood?

PleaseStopCrying · 19/03/2020 15:53

People with learning difficulties are not more at risk from Coronavirus!

Many of them would be, quite a lot of learning difficulties go hand in hand with underlying health conditions.

Tonyaster · 19/03/2020 15:53

Nothing vulnerable about the women I saw piling out this morning when the hour was finishing, trollies piled high! Perhaps they all had heart disease or diabetes, but I doubt it somehow.

Tonyaster · 19/03/2020 15:54

Then it wouldn't be the learning difficulties that would make then vulnerable would it? Or disabled people necessarily, if they are healthy and without hypertension, diabetes or ling disease.

Duchessofblandings · 19/03/2020 15:57

Tonyaster

“People with learning difficulties are not more at risk from Coronavirus!”

You’re right but they are certainly more vulnerable in a panic buying frenzy in a supermarket. Would you seriously deny someone in that category the chance to ship without fear?

Duchessofblandings · 19/03/2020 15:58

Shop, not ship, obviously Grin

Greensmurf1 · 19/03/2020 15:59

Pretty frustrating when we are having to home school and take pay cuts while MIL decides to take a bus into town to go to tescos... despite having another round of chemo coming up soon and only just recovering from major surgery. What’s the point of the NHS trying to save her life for the past several months if she can’t be bothered to preserve it herself. So angry!

GabsAlot · 19/03/2020 16:00

how do they decide whose vulnerable though

i made a tghread ab0out this an iceland near a friend was just bombarded by everyone saying it wasnt fair they werent allowed in so they let them in anyway-selfish arseholes

PleaseStopCrying · 19/03/2020 16:02

Then it wouldn't be the learning difficulties that would make then vulnerable would it?

No but saying people with learning difficulties are not more likely to get it is short sighted as many of those are still in the vulnerable group and therefore entitled to shop just as much as the elderly.

Greenpop21 · 19/03/2020 16:12

Their age makes them vulnerable, fit or not. A dr said the other day that even if you’re fit, just being in your 70s means your body’s immune system won’t react like somebody younger. They can overreact and their organs shut down=death.
