Is anyone in a job where they are not concerned about it’s future?

Just curious really.
What jobs are going to experience relatively little interruption or at least be assured of a role to return to...
NHS staff (thank you thank you)
Teachers/other school staff (thank you also)
People working for supermarkets? (Thank you too!)
Manufacturers of toilet paper???

What industries are going to fare best through this?

DH is in the entertainment industry so we’re probably screwed.

Yes - My role is funded by a large charity and we are always on temporary contracts anyway. I can see their fundraising taking a huge nose dive if social gatherings diminish - coffee mornings, hikes, marathons etc.

Bank. Feeling lucky right now as our comms are excellent and everyone is putting people first (staff and customers).

cleaning & hygiene companies

Lecturer in a healthcare subject. I moan about my job a lot but I've never been more thankful to have it right now. A few months ago I was seriously considering leaving to become self-employed - thank fuck I didn't.

Bonkersblond · 17/03/2020 20:15

Aerospace therefore doomed.

ConfusedDotty · 17/03/2020 20:16

I'm in insurance, everyone needs it or has to have it. I'm safe. My DP is a tradesman in a sector everyone needs. We are, and I realise this, very lucky.

Take care all.

Nursery worker Sad

DIYBother · 17/03/2020 20:17

I’m a lawyer and we are pretty secure. We can mostly work from home, and the need for us will continue to exist.

Feel so, so sorry for those whose jobs are not secure. I can’t imagine how frightening that is.

Moomin8 · 17/03/2020 20:18

No I'm a beauty therapist. I don't think I'll have a job when I come off maternity leave.

Reginabambina · 17/03/2020 20:19

Most large companies are just a couple months away from going into administration at any point. It’s just the way business works I’m afraid. Most people just have no idea how quickly things can go tits up.

bellie710 · 17/03/2020 20:19

I owned a cafe, made the decision to close this weekend, thankfully DH is quite safe!

TerribleCustomerCervix · 17/03/2020 20:20

DH works from a Trade Union who represents healthcare staff. He’ll be ok, if very very busy, over the next few months.

Im due to start a new job in HR this month. I’m half expecting to be told thanks but no thanks because of this.

Reginabambina · 17/03/2020 20:20

@DIYBother law is no where near as secure as lawyers seem to think it is. Overheads are very high, as are non-payment rates.

Juststopit · 17/03/2020 20:20

Adult social care. I will never be without a job, for which I am very grateful

rosieposies · 17/03/2020 20:21

I'm a sahm and just lost the little part time job I had doing some bits for a travel company - however OH works in software and is doing very well as loads of people in the type of industry he makes software for need to get online now (his clients demographic is mainly old rich people) His whole office can work remotely at the drop of a hat so not an issue for him.

Whattodo121 · 17/03/2020 20:21

Part time Teacher and transport worker here, both salaried and public sector so secure. Very glad I didn’t go freelance which I was planning to do this time last year as all my
Freelance work I do on the side has been cancelled in the last 24 hours.

Fr0g · 17/03/2020 20:21

Medical Research - currently prioritising CONVID19

NoemieNioche · 17/03/2020 20:21

I moan about my job a lot but I've never been more thankful to have it right now.

Amen to this. The jobs market will be utterly transformed as more of us stick with our safe, boring jobs.

Zaphodsotherhead · 17/03/2020 20:22

Supermarket - so I reckon I'm safe unless we go to rationing in which case the workforce will be dropped to bare minimum, but people are always going to need to buy food.

Also write books - romance, which people are buying more than usual. I think people just want a guaranteed happy ending and romance fills that 'things will be all right in the end' thing (although my books are anything but fluffy and nice...)

BeijingBikini · 17/03/2020 20:22

My husband works for a big pharma company so I think he is fine.

I work for a big travel company so I'm not!!

WhenYouveAFirstInEnglish · 17/03/2020 20:23

We will be OK. Nurse and insolvency solicitor. Might even make a million! Every cloud.....

Seriously, feel very lucky, and horrified for those people who are facing economic ruin.

DIYBother · 17/03/2020 20:23

What kind of law do you do? My clients are all major insurers. We virtually never have issues with non-payment, and my firm has a huge cash float and no debt. We will be fine. Appreciate it’s not the same for all - if you’re in a small or high street firm I can imagine it’s a lot less secure.

I'm in finance and think we'll be ok. We can WFH and need to carry on and meet our deadlines.

firsttimemumma123 · 17/03/2020 20:24

Agricultural industry, both DH & I. Think we’ll be ok, people gotta eat!
