Is anyone in a job where they are not concerned about it’s future?

Just curious really.
What jobs are going to experience relatively little interruption or at least be assured of a role to return to...
NHS staff (thank you thank you)
Teachers/other school staff (thank you also)
People working for supermarkets? (Thank you too!)
Manufacturers of toilet paper???

What industries are going to fare best through this?

DH is in the entertainment industry so we’re probably screwed.

Any IT. services for online retailing

I think fashion will struggle though.

irregularegular · 17/03/2020 20:39

I'm not worried about my University position. Very grateful.

Property management. One of the few areas in the industry which is relatively recession proof, I can do it from home and we will be unlikely to drop income as a result of the virus. DH works in the same industry but a very different role. We both feel extremely lucky for this.

Skinnyjeansandaloosetop · 17/03/2020 20:40

Community OT in adult social care. Will be ok. Feel dreadful for others.

Nquartz · 17/03/2020 20:41

@Fr0g any news you can share?

spiffing · 17/03/2020 20:41

Nurse- based within Intensive Care. Huge concerns, but certainly none about keeping my job!

Thursday12 · 17/03/2020 20:41

I work in child protection social work so my job will be fine and going as normal, however I am concerned about the vulnerable families I work with and the impact on food banks and other services for children

Cherrysherbet · 17/03/2020 20:42

I work in a supermarket, so I’ll be ok. Dh is also in the entertainment industry. I have no idea what we’ll do. We seem to slip through the net from what I saw of the Govt plans today. No help for us what so ever 😢

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 17/03/2020 20:42

Civil service, in a department that is safe from emergency redeployment thankfully. DS on the other hand, not so much (aviation)

Lovemusic33 · 17/03/2020 20:42

Mental health

Kahlua4me · 17/03/2020 20:42

bloodywhitecat I am in awe of you, that’s a tough job to do ❤️

Dh and I run our own electrical contractor business so we are worried. We think we should be okay but work will decrease over the next while and we have staff to pay. I know they can claim ssp but I can’t let that happen as they need proper salaries.

Not sure how long I can keep letting them go into houses and factories as putting them at risk all the time...

FunnysInLaJardin · 17/03/2020 20:44

Thankfully DH is a teacher so we will retain 50% of our household income in the worst case scenario.

Teaching is tough, but when it comes to times like these its a godsend wrt job security

Gwenhwyfar · 17/03/2020 20:44

Public sector.
Of course, if there is a massive recession and not enough tax revenue, we could suffer, but probably OK for now.
Takeaways and things like that are probably doing well. Anything that helps people have a semblance of fun or pleasure without gathering in large groups.

WookieWoo · 17/03/2020 20:45

NHS manager here. Life at work is intense, draining and scary. With the odd moment of joy and happienss when something goes right (finding a spare box of face masks, for example). Eternally grateful for my job security right now, regardless of how much it takes from me.

I can't imagine how it must feel to not have job security at the moment. One of the many reasons we all need to be taking this seriously.

Aveino · 17/03/2020 20:45

Educational psychologists are surely recession-proof?

NHS staff ditto.

IsolationMum · 17/03/2020 20:47

Childminder, so if I get through this I should be fine!

JuniLoolaPalooza · 17/03/2020 20:47

I'm in law, in a legal aid area. Lots of peoe turning up to book appointments and calling in so feeling confident there.
DP works for an energy company and helping keep the lights on!

My heart is just breaking for people who are going to be unemployed and really worried about the potential homelessness situation in the next few months. the government really need to sort that out or we will be experiencing never seen before levels of street homelessness and it is terrible now.

FunnysInLaJardin · 17/03/2020 20:47

corona its tough times, we all just hope we can weather the storm and it doesn't last too long. Not clear yet whether the tap will be turned off work wise like 2008 or whether people will carry on buying houses!

Lobsterquadrille2 · 17/03/2020 20:47

Accountant in a global insurance company so probably ok. I've just found my glasses as I actually read a PP as "I work as a supermodel".

Rafflesway · 17/03/2020 20:47

My DH was a freelance college lecturer until he took early retirement 10 years ago. (He is now past normal retirement age.)

He received a phone call today from one of the agencies he was registered with and who often found him long term placements. They asked him if he would consider taking on another contract with immediate start. We we're both 🤔 🤔 🤔!

Rafflesway · 17/03/2020 20:48

were 🙄

tmh88 · 17/03/2020 20:49

I work for a chain of restaurants. Already been told I’ll be no doubt losing my job in the next couple of weeks. Trying not to think about it as I feel physically sick.
