Is anyone in a job where they are not concerned about it’s future?

Just curious really.
What jobs are going to experience relatively little interruption or at least be assured of a role to return to...
NHS staff (thank you thank you)
Teachers/other school staff (thank you also)
People working for supermarkets? (Thank you too!)
Manufacturers of toilet paper???

What industries are going to fare best through this?

DH is in the entertainment industry so we’re probably screwed.

I'm a dental nurse and DH army, think we're okay... dentistry is kind of just acting as if everything is normal and well we always need an army/some sort of defence force

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 17/03/2020 19:57

I am a gardener, my customers can stay inside whilst I am there and pay me by BACS. I think I can ride this out, it’s such worrying times, who knows how life will affected long term

Randomschoolworker19 · 17/03/2020 19:58

Teaching Assistant on a permanent contract so I think we're going to be okay. We've been told if schools close we'll be WFH.

We had lots of staff off today self isolating due to underlying conditions and about 70 kids off too for various reasons. We've now closed years 3, 4 and 5 because we don't have the staff to run safely.

I work for a charity - we are in a position to work from home and have been assured that jobs are currently not under threat we will be paid etc but I’m more concerned for later down the line as fundraising will be hit if this becomes a more long term situation and then I’m worried if we could face job losses in the future.

soupforbrains · 17/03/2020 19:58

I work for a company who makes and installs super high voltage cables (400kV) we also do the maintenance and repair work on the work. We’re talking national grid, energy distribution networks, power plants, and network rail.

Unless people suddenly stop needing electricity we will be carrying in largely as normal. I consider myself lucky in this.

Zacharyezrarawlings · 17/03/2020 19:59

NHS doctor. Although the next few months will be hell I do at least have job security which makes me very fortunate. Additionally DH is a teacher so as a family, financially we are very lucky.

Work in the commercial property sector dealing with long term strategy, so should in theory be fine. Mildly worried about colleagues in residential and commercial agency if people defer making decisions about moving house or premises.

Cheeseisformice · 17/03/2020 20:00

Third sector. It may expand

TheGirlWhoLived · 17/03/2020 20:00

I’m a SAHM , guess I’m pretty safe

HopefullyAnonymous · 17/03/2020 20:00

Police. I experimented going to be very busy!

HopefullyAnonymous · 17/03/2020 20:01
  • expect I’m
Tulipstulips · 17/03/2020 20:01

We’re not massively concerned yet, though obviously nothing is certain. One of us works in a medical research related field, the other in a field related to the emergency services. We can also both work from home, so we know we’re extremely lucky.

Coldemort · 17/03/2020 20:01

Commercial insurance.
God knows, but with Brexit as well I'm gonna punt on buggered..

StubbleTurnips · 17/03/2020 20:01

Emergency planner - speciality is pandemic. Not worried for a while yet. They usually decide they don’t need us when the good times are rolling.

ProfessorPootle · 17/03/2020 20:02

I’m in creative, dh is construction. We’re both screwed.

happymumof22019 · 17/03/2020 20:03

Civil service which is secure long term but still financial worries as If schools close I’ll need to look after children and unclear what will happen over pay in that scenario some are bandying around UC while off.

Peachypips78 · 17/03/2020 20:03

Yeah NHS psych ward so no change for me!

OH runs a charity for young people so more need rather than less.

Moneymad27 · 17/03/2020 20:03

Funeral Directors

Otterses · 17/03/2020 20:03

I work in probation. DH is in the forces, so we'll both be alright long term. He's due to be deployed in a couple of weeks, and my workplace is reevaluating daily. We're looking at WFH options, but I doubt I'll be doing much if nurseries close.

ProfessorPootle · 17/03/2020 20:04

We’re both self employed too so no ssp ....

undead · 17/03/2020 20:04

I am sahm so no changes there. Dh is a university professor. I don't know how his work/salary is affected but we have some savings.

Fatted · 17/03/2020 20:04

DH and I are relatively safe. Both public sector and relatively front line. No idea if I will still get paid if there is a 'shut down' but at least we can get sick pay etc if off ill. I'm well aware we are the lucky ones.

InASense · 17/03/2020 20:05

I crank out pulpy books for a living.

Sales have dropped a wee bit since I think everyone is too glued to the news / social media to read at the moment... but I'm anticipating once people (especially older folks) settle into social distancing sales will probably go back to normal, or better.

Not worried but I really worry for other people 😕

TARSCOUT · 17/03/2020 20:06

@bathtangle same as you but must be smaller scale as I am worried!

BeyondMyWits · 17/03/2020 20:06

Pharmacy, business is manic!
