Is anyone in a job where they are not concerned about it’s future?

Just curious really.
What jobs are going to experience relatively little interruption or at least be assured of a role to return to...
NHS staff (thank you thank you)
Teachers/other school staff (thank you also)
People working for supermarkets? (Thank you too!)
Manufacturers of toilet paper???

What industries are going to fare best through this?

DH is in the entertainment industry so we’re probably screwed.

Support worker in a residential children’s home. My marriage is more likely to be under threat than my job if we go into lockdown whilst I’m on shift. DH has told me in no uncertain terms that he won’t cope very well!

plentyoflooroll · 18/03/2020 23:10

DP senior civil servant (thank god)!! We totally take the piss out of his paper shuffling role but it's keeping us afloat x

hellsbells77 · 19/03/2020 00:09

My husband will be fine - small engineering firm but have had massive growth last year (they mainly export the machines they make) which has put them in a great position and they are still getting orders now. They have also been told that if they have to be off they will still be paid.

Me on the other hand not so - freelance photographer so my work has already stopped and is unlikely to start again for at least 3 months if not longer. Thankfully I did get some more work than normal over the winter months, so that helps, and we can manage our day to day stuff on my husband's salary. Generally, my industry is already struggling unfortunately.

Eldest son a software developer, youngest son is a software engineer (I.T) good jobs, well paid and stable. They can both work from home. I have no worries with them.

Eldest married, two children. Our DiL works part time. Possibility she may be temporarily laid off. She works cooking in the cafe of a local market garden.

They can manage without her wage. They are not up the creek. Eldest is very well paid. He worked hard enough for and has a massive student debt he pays back so much of per month. DiL wage gives them, what most would class as luxuries, so they are ok.

Middle son has health issues so is on disability.

Daughter job as a manager in hospitality is more dicey. She has never been out of work. Always gets another job straightaway when she wants a change. She lives abroad. She will be ok. As she is in management she is less likely to go but its still a possibility

Toomuchtrouble4me · 19/03/2020 00:56

Ex Teacher - ok if I have to go back to work.
But DH in wholesale catering - plummeted already and he’s the main wage earner.

WillWinterEverEnd · 19/03/2020 01:01

Civil service so feel relatively confident that I will still have a job at the end of this. Currently on maternity leave though after having a baby last night 😬

Smallnmighty · 19/03/2020 06:01

I imagine divorce lawyers the world over are feeling pretty confident of an increase in workload Wink By about next weekend now you're both WFH and the kids are off school!!

FortunesFave · 19/03/2020 06:22

Keffie Have they expressed confidence in their positions? I'm a copywriter and work mainly for software companies...I keep hoping people will still need new software!

Casino218 · 19/03/2020 06:38

I'm a university lecturer nursing. Not worried but worried for others. I'm ringing for food deliveries from local small businesses to keep them going. I'm going to be skint at the end of this!

user246854 · 19/03/2020 07:37

I'm a 1to1 SENS T/A my original contract (12hours) ends in two weeks and I have already signed a new contract for the same job just upped to 30 hours

I'm really worried that this might not now get renewed and start on 20th April

Massive worry as a single parent of 4 Sad

Ricoetbello · 19/03/2020 07:48

I think people that make underwear will never go out of business
Barbers too, men need their cuts

hopelessatthinkingupusernames · 19/03/2020 07:56

I work in a law firm. I expect some of our departments will take a big hit but debt recovery and executries are going to be really busy.

SushiGo · 19/03/2020 08:00

I work in cemeteries.

FrenchFancie · 19/03/2020 10:21

Husband is civil service, I’m a probate lawyer. I think our jobs are safe, sadly in my case as I know an uptick in business for me means loss for families and that makes me sad

JoshArcherStoleMyTractor · 19/03/2020 10:39

Police, prisons, probation, social work. DH and I sometimes bemoan the poor pay, high expectations and relentless emotional burden, and consider abandoning for a better paid private sector job with a lot less stress, but our jobs won't go away. We will however have to continue to try and keep people safe throughout this madness and without the usual mechanisms available

Camomila · 19/03/2020 10:53

DH - works for tfl doing station rotas, he's wfh.
DBro is a paramedic and DDad works for the council (also wfh as he's meant to self-isolate).

We're very lucky that at least we don't have money to worry about (Although DBro probably has it and DS1, and I've got a bit of a tickly cough)

Sirecho · 19/03/2020 11:23

I'm a staff nurse on an acute adult inpatient ward - already had off duty rota changed to accommodate staff sickness/workload and been finishing late every shift I've worked ( usual shift length is 12 and half hours). OH works for company dealing with heating/cooling/air con systems for any type of transport so should be okay.

Spidey66 · 19/03/2020 11:27

I'm a mental health nurse in the NHS. Obviously, my job is safe. I would imagine to be busier once it's all over, as I think this will cause people with problems like health anxieties and/or OCD to worsen as a result of coronavirus.

NCParanoia · 19/03/2020 11:50

I'm a voice-over artist with a home studio so it's good for me really but less readily available with a 4 mo and a 2.5 Yr old at home full time!

keffie12 · 19/03/2020 12:07

@FortunesFave yes they have. I have asked both of them. They can both work from home. My youngest is working from home.

My eldest is still going in the office whilst he can. They have a skeleton staff in the office. One in the office per team. The rest are working from home.

My eldest prefers going in the office as he can get more done. Two young children at home of nearly 3 and 1 does not make for a quiet working environment so he will do that until he is not allowed anymore.

My eldest anyway, is insured to the hilt. He has insurance for, if he was out of work, that would give them the same income. You can imagine how much he pays for that monthly!!

He doesn't want to be on benefits if that happened. It also covers for sickness and he is ensured if anything happened to him, our DiL would be set up for life. Unfortunately most can't do that. It's a hit to their income each month. He factored it in from the beginning as he didn't want the worry.

Your work involves that side you should manage, I would have thought. Remember your being given loans and grants for self employed starting next week including the holiday mortgage if necessary.

It's a hell of a time for us all

Jessie9323 · 19/03/2020 12:09

I work for a large rail company and luckily have no worries about my job.

fussychica · 19/03/2020 12:21

Retired and thankfully DS and his partner should be fine. Teacher and A&E nurse, respectively.
Tough times.

FlamingoG88 · 19/03/2020 12:39

DH works for the railways so should be fine.

I work within a law firm so depends entirely on if the business makes it through, although should be OK.

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 19/03/2020 12:52

I work in a school. Currently on home leave, but not sure what it means when I return, as I'm not teaching staff.

takethegirloutofwales · 19/03/2020 12:55

I’m in comms (for the live events tech sector) and husband’s an architect. Hmmmm. Both working at the moment. One of my clients (I’m self employed) has said they’re not sure they can pay from next month. The others think they can ride this out which is amazing. Meantime I’ve had a call back from a care agency I used to work for many moons ago who’ve asked if I’d join their reserves list as they’ll need to get help to the elderly as and when carers get sick. Our income might change but I think we will still be some of the lucky ones. If this would have happened a month later, we’d probably be up a creek without a paddle as we were about to sell and move and take another £400k on our mortgage. Suddenly our current home with its affordable mortgage is the thing I’m most grateful for.
