Is anyone in a job where they are not concerned about it’s future?

Just curious really.
What jobs are going to experience relatively little interruption or at least be assured of a role to return to...
NHS staff (thank you thank you)
Teachers/other school staff (thank you also)
People working for supermarkets? (Thank you too!)
Manufacturers of toilet paper???

What industries are going to fare best through this?

DH is in the entertainment industry so we’re probably screwed.

@Bargebill19 that's the same as me and dh

WhateverHappenedToBathPearls · 18/03/2020 09:19

I'm a civil servant, work have been fab. Lots of flexible working and WFH options. I'm pregnant and so will now be WFH up until I go on mat leave. My managers have been very supportive. Times like this do make putting up with the lower pay and day -to-day crap of working in the public sector seem much more worth it.

Lexilooo · 18/03/2020 09:19

Friend of mine is a temp and was worried about job security. She works for the biggest manufacturer of hand sanitiser and soap. They currently have rolling shifts working 24 hours a day, I said I thought she is safer than most.

Sn0tnose · 18/03/2020 09:43

I'm a civil servant but don't feel bullet proof as the economy will be suffering for a long time so cuts may be in the future.

Same here. We’ve had cuts before and we’ll have cuts again, so I’m squirrelling away money where I can to build up a buffer should it be needed. DH works in a supermarket. We’re ok short term but I don’t think that anyone is completely secure long term.

EBearhug · 18/03/2020 09:46

IT, for a company involved in telecoms and Internet services. Am WFH, which we've been able to do for years, and while there are some interruptions to specific things here and there, things are mostly very busy at the moment.

whycantIthinkofadecentusername · 18/03/2020 09:59

@stubbleturnips yes, we've been on it since January too. I don't know about you but I have a list of "I told you so's" that will be trotted out when this is over. What's a day off? 😂. We've been backed off for PH to take over (local authority here) but it's hard handing over. Focusing on another element of this now.

CorianderLord · 18/03/2020 11:00

I'm in the media.... The pandemic is doing very well for us. My job is safe.

Chocolatedaim · 18/03/2020 11:02

I’m a childminder, I have no children today. But I envisage becoming stupidly busy if schools shut.
Once this is over business will go back to normal.

thinkfast · 18/03/2020 11:02

DH works for the ambulance service. I'm a corporate lawyer. At least one of us should still have a job in a few weeks

IDontDrinkTea · 18/03/2020 11:04

Front line nhs here. Not only is my job safe, but I’ve got plenty of overtime now...

slug · 18/03/2020 16:23

DH and I both work in Higher Education. Putting aside the parlous financial situation fo many HEIs (including my own), we are both fairly OK.

I work in online learning. Given my current workload I think I'm fairly safe.
DH works in science labs. There's been nothing for him to do for 2 weeks now and he's been sent home.

Daffie19 · 18/03/2020 16:35

I'm a nurse, so Defo safe job wise! 😂

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 18/03/2020 16:40

I work for a large financial services firm so I'm fairly sure I'll be OK. Companies are always going to need accountants. And we deal with insolvency too...

However, DP works for a brewery in a marketing capacity. The prime minister just told everyone to avoid going to pubs and clubs. It's not looking great long term.

We're lucky though to both work for large firms and to be able to work from home so we have security in the short term.

Joyfulnhs · 18/03/2020 16:50

We are screwed I think financially 😔. DH works in the aviation industry and his company have taken a massive hit obviously so we don't know if his workplace will remain open let alone whether he will have a job.
I work for the nhs but on a training contract so my pay is poor. My job will be fine I think but not enough money for us to live on.

DesLynamsMoustache · 18/03/2020 16:54

DH works for the local authority in IT so think he will be OK as most stuff he can do from home and with everyone home-working and trying to connect and use laptops he will probably be quite busy!

I'm self-employed, but my work might take a bit of a hit if others are struggling financially. I'll just have to wait and see.

Itoldyouiwasill · 18/03/2020 17:01

Mental health supported housing worker

TooTrueToBeGood · 18/03/2020 17:02

IT for a pharmaceutical company. I work from home anyway so no change required if I need to self-isolate or we go full lockdown. Three month notice period and very good redundancy terms so even if I am made redundant it's not an immediate crisis. I count myself very fortunate and hope that people like me (who are not that rare) do not have money thrown at them in some blanket handout scheme when so many others will have much more pressing needs.

anothernotherone · 18/03/2020 17:16

Adult social care - very secure but very stressful atm with lots of potentially long shifts and none of the lovely parts (taking groups on outings, planning projects and skills training) just fire fighting with the residents home 24/7 as their workplaces are closed, and solo shifts as colleagues self isolate (sometimes for dubious reasons). Did a 24 hour shift Saturday lunch time to Sunday lunch time.

Schools are closed here.

DH is in IT - OK for now, finally allowed to mostly work from home from tomorrow.
We live in Germany and unemployment benifit is very good for those who have been continuously in full time work for the previous two years and are let go through no fault of their own, so we'd be ok financially for quite a ling time.

I'm a bit worried I'll be the one bringing it into tbe house from work. Its very hard indeed (impossible in some cases) to keep a physical distance from some clients.

Callmefordinner · 18/03/2020 17:27

Government job looking after people. So I'm safe for ever!!

Tigerlilly17 · 18/03/2020 17:29

I’m nhs staff. I’m a nurse in Gp primary care. I think lots of jobs are safe, as they are much needed, now more than ever. My grandad always joked years ago that the only certain job for life was a funeral home.

purplebunny2012 · 18/03/2020 17:30

Pretty sure my job is safe. Finance support for research at a university

Maraki · 18/03/2020 17:32

I’m in medical News media. Work has absolutely exploded. My Sales colleagues did a years worth of business in a week.
The hours were ok, now they are gruesome, trying to cover everything. We are absolutely milking the situation.

PinkLipsDontLie · 18/03/2020 17:36

Software engineer in an international company. All work can be done remotely and this is what we do now. We are not affected at all directly, but we could all be affected in the long run if specific industries take a huge hit.

clareken260 · 18/03/2020 17:39

DH is a postman. Was told that deliveries will not be stopping as postmen and women were regarded as the fourth emergency service!

teenagetantrums · 18/03/2020 17:40

I work in a care home so job safe . Unless coronviris gets in home l suppose. Partner in retail so job safe. My adult kids in hospitality both lost thier jobs already and want to come home. Going to be hard supporting them on our minimum wage jobs.
