Is anyone in a job where they are not concerned about it’s future?

Just curious really.
What jobs are going to experience relatively little interruption or at least be assured of a role to return to...
NHS staff (thank you thank you)
Teachers/other school staff (thank you also)
People working for supermarkets? (Thank you too!)
Manufacturers of toilet paper???

What industries are going to fare best through this?

DH is in the entertainment industry so we’re probably screwed.

Retail - Agriculture.

I'm a civil servant and my DP is a firefighter. Both of us would be redeployed to other types of work if required.
My DP is worried what will happen if his colleagues end up having to self-isolate as they are already massively understaffed and struggle on a day to day basis to cover shifts when everything is normal.

coronamoana · 18/03/2020 18:53

how are people going to manage to wfh when they also have to teach/mind their kids? I can't do with mine around.

mildlymiffed · 18/03/2020 18:53

LA- specialising in council house building. Presume they'll be more need than ever. Very very sadly.

Oscarsdaddy · 18/03/2020 18:56

I’m self employed and work from home and my business is in international freight transport and shipping

I will be OK until end of April, after that I’m fucked

SparkyBlue · 18/03/2020 18:56

I'm a sahm and DH is a director with a multinational tech company and is currently absolutely rushed off his feet as they are busier than ever. He really thinks that this current crisis will change how we work forever.

Biscusting · 18/03/2020 18:59

Medical research, hopefully secure!!

littlejlb · 18/03/2020 19:00

I am a care assistant and work in a home for disabled adults. Many staff are calling in sick, but I'm not concerned about the company collapsing or losing my job. My only concern is my daughter and no childcare. I'm not sure how we are going to juggle it.

spagbog5 · 18/03/2020 19:06

Pharmacy - it's insane at the moment 😢

IrisTs · 18/03/2020 19:11

I have just lost my job in shipping. Recruitment is obviously dead so no chance for new job for a long time 😩

FaveNumberIs2 · 18/03/2020 19:12

Me.

Holdmenow · 18/03/2020 19:17

@IrisTs do you mind me asking what area of shipping you were in? I find that strange as I would have thought shipping essential for supply chain etc??!

LochJessMonster · 18/03/2020 19:18

Local government- work for the district council so no effects on my job luckily and I can work remotely from home too.

Violetroselily · 18/03/2020 19:21

Risk management for a bank. We need to maintain stability for the financial system!

IrisTs · 18/03/2020 19:22

@Holdmenow
Freight for specific stuff so not food supply or anything but to outing to mention... mostly going abroad too so Brexit looming was a scare but the virus just killed it. First job I really loved too 😭

HerRoyalNotness · 18/03/2020 19:25

We’re in the oil sector and 3500 office workers have just been put on week on week off work in our city at ONE company.

DH doesn’t have an actual project and has work for 2 more weeks. I’ve literally just started at the same company and am on a project that has suspended the next phase. About 80% complete on current phase so it will go on for a bit longer. They may not need all of the staff though. We have mandatory WFH. That will be erm challenging.

wohdk · 18/03/2020 19:25

Employment lawyer .. very busy advising our corporate clients on redundancies and lay offs .. but am very sad for those who are affected

supercee · 18/03/2020 19:27

I'm also police. No home working for me.

Smileyk · 18/03/2020 19:28

Yes, we make medical devices and I make sure that they're certified. Working from as easily as office, company is in a good place so should be ok.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 18/03/2020 19:29

Civil service immigration - working from home now but when we go back it will be crazy busy once everyone starts travelling again so yes, should have a job to go back to.

I know many people who don't though 😔😢

Holdmenow · 18/03/2020 19:30

@IrisTs oh ok thank you. Sorry about your job. I hope something else comes up soon.

Mary54 · 18/03/2020 19:32

Freelance proofreader. Always worked from home so no change. I think work will continue to come in when the universities reopen

roarfeckingroar · 18/03/2020 19:33

Communications as an industry. My department are all working from and absolutely swamped with work to do to mitigate CV.

@HerRoyalNotness. Sounds similar to my husband's job. He does shutdowns on the chemical plants. Spent the last 18 months on planning for a huge shutdown which was meant to start in a few weeks, now it's all been cancelled! Loads of lads laid off or told not to start. Worrying times ahead.
