Neil Ferguson, one of the top epidemiologists advising the prime minister on coronavirus, has self-isolated after experiencing symptoms.

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 18/03/2020 09:29

We have two schools local here, one is shut as they don't have enough staff, and the one my DCs would normally be in is open. They're sending homework packs home today though, so obviously there are a lot of kids off/they think they'll be closing soon. We have a friend picking ours up and dropping them off on the doorstep.

I'm a bit paranoid about virus particles coming in on the paper though - how long does it last on paper? Maybe I can leave them untouched for a few hours/days...?

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 18/03/2020 09:31

Beebity - make sure when it's dry you send them out the garden/yard if you have one to get some air. Makes it slightly better I think, to have not been stuck in the house continuously

MarshaBradyo · 18/03/2020 09:32

Neil F was on R4 this morning sounded ok but probably felt rotten

MurrayTheMonk · 18/03/2020 09:32

There hasn't been that instruction. And therein lies the problem. We are at a half way house in terms of official advice vs logic vs practicality (schools ordered to stay open b half can't as every one off sick).
Therefore confusion reigns, people m ie around in some cases when they shouldn't, others isolate and suffer ill effects from that when they may not need to, everyone panics and we end up with the vulnerable not being able to buy basic food.

It's chaos and it needs someone-Boris- to man up, take the unpopular, maybe OTT maybe not, and yes maybe expensive decision and lock everything down bar NHS/social care/delivery and other supply chain workers.
And if we have to limit or control food buying at point of purchase then that's what we do.

Of course it will be rubbish and miserable. But then it will be over and we will all adjust and claw our way back to normal.

Beebityboo · 18/03/2020 09:33

I'm quite scared to even go in the garden. They're all so hemmed in here. I'm just floored with paranoia/anxiety right now.

Spiraeah · 18/03/2020 09:34

I see Sainsbury are prioritising over 70s and vulnerable people for delivery slots. Not sure how this is going to work? Will they be asking for ID to prove you’re over 70? How do you prove you’re vulnerable? And most importantly how can they stop Grandma doing a huge shop and dishing it out to the family?

MurrayTheMonk · 18/03/2020 09:36

Beebitty-as long as your are two metres from anyone else you will be fine.
At this point with serious anxiety if you think being outside would help (and it's the only thing that helps me when I Have panic attacks) then it's worth it and you can do it safely.

FrustratedSoul · 18/03/2020 09:47

Am I being unreasonable? I am in a vulnerable group and older. My adult child who lives here won't stop going to the gym , because its very clean. I want them to stop going, to cut down on non-essential contact. Am I being paranoid or sensible?

littledrummergirl · 18/03/2020 09:51

@WhoWants2Know Try webex. It let's you hold group sessions.

Calmonthesurfacebut · 18/03/2020 09:53

For what it’s worth, I think schools will close this week, or stay open for those who need the childcare. We had an email to say that they had staff shortages, so would possibly be combining classes.

I’m coughing like a trooper, no temp, and don’t feel ill, so dd can’t go in. OH slept other side of the house last night and was out to his office before I was up, he has his own business - probably will be going bust though - and own office. Technically he shouldn’t go in according to guidelines, but it’s pay day today for over 100 people (not office based). It could be their last full pay, as the company has lost all its business, he just can’t not go in. Luckily he can shut the door from everyone else.

He’s bringing computers home tonight, I can’t think how he will work away from the office, just impossible to bring all the files back.

BrokenBrit · 18/03/2020 09:55

@FrustratedSoul you are not being unreasonable.
Gyms have been suggested as hotspots for transmission. Get your adult child to exercise at home or in the garden or go for a run outside. If they won’t then it’s time they moved out.

Spacecadetagain · 18/03/2020 09:56

I could do with some advice . A very close friend of mine who works in a factory called me last night to say someone he works with has been wearing a face mask at work this week and told supervisors that it’s because she’s going on holiday next week ! (That alone shocked me ) she’s not from the U.K. and is going home . She was told by her supervisor that she would have to isolate for 14 days on returning and ranted at them about it saying “and will I get paid!” However my friend said he then heard third hand from someone that the real reason she’s wearing a mask is because her son has symptoms ! I felt sick when he told me and feel the factory should be informed .. I told him if he wasn’t going to say anything then I would call them .. but am I overreacting given that it could just be hearsay .. I honestly feel torn ..

Angryrant55 · 18/03/2020 10:04

A pub near me is regulars only. Should be closed - a lot of the regulars are old men.

FrustratedSoul · 18/03/2020 10:05

Thanks BrokenBrit

I thought I was right but am being made to feel that I am being paranoid

confusedandtired99 · 18/03/2020 10:06

What would happen if Boris caught it and had to isolate? Who would be in charge then?

Angryrant55 · 18/03/2020 10:07

Dominic Raab but Boris will probably do the conference via Skype.

ofwarren · 18/03/2020 10:08

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases worldwide has surpassed 200,000. Of those, 7,990 have died, 82,037 have recovered, and 110,044 are still open t.co/eUoE2b20hL

MarshaBradyo · 18/03/2020 10:09

It feels surreal that that number is low compared to our projections.

SistemaAddict · 18/03/2020 10:16

What would happen if Boris caught it and had to isolate? Who would be in charge then?

Hopefully someone competent who has the balls to do something other than give guidance that lots of people can't seem to understand.

Ifartglitterybaubles · 18/03/2020 10:20

I have the hand sanitiser too. The ingredients are on their website. It's a long standing chemical company, the gel itself stinks of Ethanol.

Ifartglitterybaubles · 18/03/2020 10:23

Hand gel data sheet.

I think all foreign travel has been curtailed for 30 days hasn't it? So no one is going anywhere? Or is that just advisory?

Listening to 5 live- a and e doctor talking about the situation and can't understand the governments lack of robust response on this-and says they have no adequate PPE.
It's actually quite scary.

Journalists-and everyone really -need to be hammering the government on this now.
It's beyond a joke.

Jerseygaly · 18/03/2020 10:29

Our school has a case in a parent.
So my tight chest and fever probably is that but how to know when it should get better. What is the timeline?
As I thought you could get better within 7 days?

SirVixofVixHall · 18/03/2020 10:31

So the hand gel is pretty standard stuff then ? The chemical info on the website is rather er.. alarming! I suppose normal though ?
