Coronavirus: Headteachers warn keeping schools open is becoming ‘increasingly untenable’
Lack of government advice is creating ‘chaos and confusion’, teaching union says

NettleTea · 18/03/2020 08:12

@allthesharks the girl has been with my daughter at college and at my house the night before last. Im tempted to say yes. So theoretically she has been in the same places as my daughter.

Kuponut · 18/03/2020 08:14

@Elephantgrey to be fair all you can usually hear on our uni campus anyway are sirens and endless mobile phones

woodencoffeetable · 18/03/2020 08:18

UEFA have postponed euro 2020 for a year

and I have already heard people moaning how unreasonable that is.

MrsFitzwilliam · 18/03/2020 08:37

I am so FUCKING ANGRY with @AberUni (Aberystwyth university that is). My daughter works there, they have been slow to move lectures online and even slower to have office based staff work from home. Now they are leaving all cafes and communal areas open for students to use and mix in so that they don't get lonely! WTAF???? and the Students union have decided to remain open 'at all costs'. What makes them immune from governement instruction to STOP ALL SOCIALISING?

MrsFitzwilliam · 18/03/2020 08:38

Sorry..... reposting as I didnt hashtag the university

I just turned over, why on earth are they pissing around about sport, put the resources into PPE and ventilators for Christ’s sake.

Calmonthesurfacebut · 18/03/2020 08:40

@BretonKitten (((hug)))

littledrummergirl · 18/03/2020 08:45

@Eeyoresstickhouse I would have them stay together. Your mums friend can arrange for her gp to send prescriptions electronically to the pharmacy your mum uses (unless in Wales) and if she needs to see a gp locally she can sign up as a temporary patient.

We have a similar situation. Mil lives in an over 55 complex. The manager has stopped all activities. My thinking is that the manager or someone else who is able self isolated there for 2 weeks. They stop all visits, no cleaners, hair appointments, carers (would have to be done by the most able-bodied there). After 2 weeks of self isolation they can then mingle amongst themselves for 10 weeks. This would help their mental health.
As things are I will be driving to get mil at some point because she will struggle with the solitude. She doesn't want to come to us yet though.

The advice is clear. Schools stay open.
People just don't want then to so they're causing a frenzy. But that doesn't mean theres a lack of advice!

SistemaAddict · 18/03/2020 08:48

Breton and tango Thanks

Primary school has now sent home packs for virtual learning. Secondary has everything online ready for anyone self isolating anyway. The older two dc will be able to get on with their work with little input from me which will allow me to spend the time with ds who will need lots of help being only 5.

How is everyone feeling this morning?

SistemaAddict · 18/03/2020 08:57

The advice is confusing in that there are children going into school who have vulnerable adults at home or collecting them who have been told to socially distance themselves. It's pointless to be isolated when the children are bringing home all their lovely germs. People can't even follow basic social distancing guidance nevermind understand that says schools stay open but everyone should distance themselves.

Helenj1977 · 18/03/2020 08:58

Shit scared. You? We're basically self isolating with no real need to.

My prepping will see us through.

I do have a tesco shop arriving minute... Gloves and anti bac wipes are ready.

Beebityboo · 18/03/2020 08:59

We're five days into our two week isolation here and getting very down. Three DC's in a tiny three bed semi detached Sad. I feel powerless and like a bad mum. Can't stop crying.

WhoWants2Know · 18/03/2020 09:01

Knackered! Working from home is actually exhausting. Where I would normally have a group session with 8 people, I have to have the same session remotely 8 times in a row!

WhoWants2Know · 18/03/2020 09:03

Also, our secondary school is half closed, so certain year groups go in each day. DD says half the teachers are supply and the kids are taking advantage and misbehaving terribly.

nellodee · 18/03/2020 09:06

You know what's annoying me about that Imperial College report? Well, obviously you don't..

This was about the research that the govt based it's original response on. Not only did they totally get it wrong by using intensive care usage rates from a totally different virus (so yes, we all DID know better than the experts, thank you very much!) but this isn't even the worst part.

The worst part is that that 250,000 deaths figure was based on us not overloading the NHS and everyone who needed care getting it. So whilst they were telling us the worst case figure was 100,000, all along they were working on a best case figure of quarter of a million.

How can we trust them at all after this?

Dk20 · 18/03/2020 09:09

Working from home while homeschooling here (Ireland) so have contestant interruptions (he is 6 and on the spectrum so doesn't know the meaning of keeping his voice low).
Have a call scheduled for 9.30 so he will be doing day 1 of the Lego challenge at that time - in his rooms.
Have visions of me ending up like that person on a business video call and the child sneaking into the room!

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 18/03/2020 09:11

Did they ever formally confirm the number of deaths yesterday? DHSC Twitter still not updated I see.

Egghead68 · 18/03/2020 09:21

The situation as outlined in the Imperial College paper is of much longer term restrictions than the government are letting on.

The Imperial paper also implies that shutting schools and universities is essential so I am sure we will see this happen very soon (unless the government changes tack again).

MarshaBradyo · 18/03/2020 09:24

Does anyone know how much the airline situation is to do with getting supplies for ventilators here?

I heard it on R4 this morning in which case it makes sense but I didn’t hear it all so can’t be sure

MarshaBradyo · 18/03/2020 09:24

And other items too we need for CV

MarshaBradyo · 18/03/2020 09:25

Although I assume passenger is different but airports need to be open for other
No idea but am interested

MigginsMrs · 18/03/2020 09:26

What makes them immune from governement instruction to STOP ALL SOCIALISING?

There hasn’t been any such government instruction maybe?
