Hearing that a child local to me has covid and admitted to hospital

middleager · 17/03/2020 23:24

Oh no Lynamic
That is worrying.

Butternutbrownie · 17/03/2020 23:25

Just popping on to say thank you to a poster (quite a few threads back!) who recommended drinking a few drops of oregano oil in water for a tight chest (asthma).

Unsure if it's psychosomatic but my chest finally feels loose again!

Lucked · 17/03/2020 23:27

Does anyone know where worldometers gets the data for serious critical cases? It currently lists 20 in the UK. I didn’t know this data was published with the UK stats.

allthesharks · 17/03/2020 23:29

It's said 20 critical cases for days. I think it's generally accepted that it's not at all accurate for critical cases, at least in the UK.

Lynamic · 17/03/2020 23:30

No there's nothing useful published in the UK stats

NettleTea · 17/03/2020 23:36

my daughter has asked if her friend can stay with her as they are both high risk, and my daughter needs to go into 12 weeks isolation from this weekend.
Friend has offered to contribute for food.
Im really not sure. They are both 19. friend diabetic but had it for years and controls it well. My daughter cystic fibrosis, diabetes and heart problem. Given the all clear from her CF clinic last week (my dad drove her to London and back from where we are near S E coast)
I mean, old couples are living together......

Angryrant55 · 17/03/2020 23:49

Plus plenty of over 70's live with younger family members anyway.

BanditoShipman · 17/03/2020 23:49

Fullofteaneedstopee I’ve had same symptoms since weekend, temp raised but not at fever level, horrible headache that I can’t get rid of and sore tickly throat ☹️

allthesharks · 17/03/2020 23:53

@NettleTea I'd maybe consider what they've been doing in the few weeks leading up to this point - have they been traveling on public transport, attending large gatherings, have they had any minor symptoms?

Does your DD live with you? Will you be self isolating too?

If they've not been particularly exposed up to this point, I think it would be beneficial for them to self isolate together for the benefit of their mental health if nothing else.

Alternatively, if there's not going to be any risk from others coming in and out of the house, maybe they could self isolate separately for the first two weeks and if they still remain symptom free, her friend could travel to her house (providing she can do so in private transport) so they could spend the remaining 10 weeks together knowing that they've gone through the period where they would display symptoms initially.

Angryrant55 · 17/03/2020 23:53

And what happens to the over 70's who get ill enough to be not be able to live independently but not ill enough to be hospitalised.

Youngatheart00 · 17/03/2020 23:56

@CharlieTangoBanana really hope that isn’t the case and that you’re all able to be together again in happier times

Lewis Goodall
' #COVID19 frontline in the NHS
spoken to an official in one of biggest Care Commissioning Groups (in a big English city). Govt says NHS will get "whatever it needs"but official says they're struggling to cope with demand right now- just one CCG but source says problems are common
Official told me in their city
-situation on the ground is "chaotic"
-Huge concern about small GPs (many are closing because staff are scared about coming in)
-Those GPs open are being "totally overrun"
-Staff haven't got correct training or equipment.l
Lack of equipment in surgeries includes basics like face masks and sanitisers/gels
Bed occupancy is already at 90%+. Not much slack in the system already.
They say that though much has been made of the fact that the NHS is in a stronger position to other health services, because it is a more centralised system, that misunderstands the 2012 Health and Scocial Care Act
That act created "a fragmented mess" of a system.
Myriad of NHS providers, all have "organisational sovereignty". Source say that's inhibiting ability to fight the covid battle on the ground
Difficult to get competing trusts to work together and share resources
Worryingly too, source says even if greater centralisation were imposed "I just don't have the staff to make it work."

stoptherideiwanttogetoff · 18/03/2020 00:11

Not surprised by this.. NHS can't cope day to day it's most definitely not going to cope now hence BJ course of action..!

BretonKitten · 18/03/2020 00:43

FIL has stage IV stomach cancer. He was told three years ago he’d be lucky to see Christmas but has battled on in an astounding fashion.

Tonight he collapsed. MIL called an ambulance. When they arrived, they checked him and said usually they would have taken him to hospital, but given the current situation, erring on the side of caution now meant leaving him at home.

It’s a dark night tonight.

boatyardblues · 18/03/2020 00:49

Oh Breton, that sounds particularly difficult and upsetting. I can only offer a gentle internet handhold, but I hope he makes it through the night.

BretonKitten · 18/03/2020 00:53

Thank you boatyardblues.

Originalyellowbelly · 18/03/2020 01:01

Breton so sorry for you all, its sounds so difficult for you, I hope you have a peaceful night. It puts my problems into perspective.

New York City reports 279 new cases of coronavirus since morning update, raising city's total to 923 t.co/eUoE2b20hL

Alib838 · 18/03/2020 06:58

With the oregano oil I've found you've got to treat it like antibiotics - three times a day every day and when it eases up or clears continue for a few says after as it can creep back. Also look at getting a Salt Pipe from Amazon (1 day delivery if you can). Holland and Barrett also sell them. This alone eases breathing. If you can get some iodine also (check patch on skin to make sure you're not allergic, then drop 2-3 drips into salt pipe and inhale 10-15 times. It will smell of iodine. This apparently kills off bacteria/viruses before they get a grip.

babychange12 · 18/03/2020 07:00

Oh Breton Thanks
We are starting to become like Italy, this is so sad

Lots of love Breton x

Elephantgrey · 18/03/2020 08:03

Venicebeach I wonder if you work in my university library. University is shut all teaching moved online and staff told they still have to come in as the shelvers can’t work from home. Meanwhile there are staff self isolating with suspected Coronavirus ( including me and my toddler )and the one staff member who’s partner is a confirmed case.
It’s so scary. I live near the hospital which has already had one death form Coronavirus and all I can hear are sirens.

Elephantgrey · 18/03/2020 08:10

* Breton and CharlieTangoBanana* that’s so hard. Flowers
