YABU yes
Yanbu no

Shameless I know. I have a small bar. People still coming but wondering at what point we should close our doors.

Passthebubbly · 16/03/2020 23:42

No way, sorry.

Jux · 16/03/2020 23:43

Anyone got an idea on whether one should stop attending a church choir?

There's maybe 15 members of this choir, who sing in church every Sunday to a congregation of maybe 10. With priest, organist and DM that makes 30 people at most. Is that too large a gathering?

It's quite a large church so the congregation can be very spread out - more than 1m apart - but the choir and DM have to be fairly close together, and they'll be on the altar along with priest and organist.

comictern · 16/03/2020 23:46

Well, I guess we're helping to prop up the frontline workers. The doctors and nurses are risking their lives (however minor the risk) to care for us all. We're risking our lives (however small the risk) by looking after their kids so that they can continue to do that.

Aurignacian · 16/03/2020 23:46

Nobody will be going to the pub. It’s a global pandemic. It’s awful, I’m sorry for your business I really am but no, for the time being you won’t get many customers.

GinnyStrupac · 16/03/2020 23:46

I think a pp has got it. There is a role there for our small businesses who have to close doors - in providing those virtual, telephone and online services - providing much needed social contact and deliveries of treats and especially essentials, and not forgetting the loo rolls!

serialtester · 16/03/2020 23:49

Yes - pubs are so important for reasons beyond having a pint. I know that it might not pay your bills OP but virtual pub might be worth a try. Good luck over the coming weeks.

midwestspring · 16/03/2020 23:50

No.
But I will be using takeaway services from restaurants to try and help them keep going.
If I use pubs I will probably be fine but I could be spreading disease to those who would die.
It wouldn't be responsible behavior from me.

I really think the government should be trying to support the service industry more.

Jamieson90 · 16/03/2020 23:56

I work in a school and I've stopped all non essential outings. It's either work, supermarket or home.

Passthebubbly · 16/03/2020 23:58

This can be a time I give back to my customers with the food we don’t sell and my support. Just dread closing our doors and worry for my staff and customers and yes selfishly how my bills will be paid with no insurance payout

The advice to stay away from pubs etc is mentioned on almost all the newspaper front pages:
news.sky.com/story/tuesdays-national-newspaper-front-pages-11958701

Passthebubbly · 17/03/2020 00:00

So.... a virtual pub? How would this look and work for you?

OP posts:
serialtester · 17/03/2020 00:01

Keep it simple - start with a Facebook group.

fifig87 · 17/03/2020 00:02

Yanbu but I live in ROI. Pubs are technically closed, although I do know a few open through the back door.

To be honest I love a night in the pub but didn't bother going out at the weekend as I think its so disrespectful to the frontline staff and the most vulnerable. Some things are way more important than a few drinks..

The virus has hit my tiny town officially but its not just the infected person that it has caused issues for. Alot of elderly people can't have carers in now because they are thought to have been infected.

MyDcAreMarvel · 17/03/2020 00:02

Do you want your local to stay open with in my case owners working solely behind the bar to serve you whilst paying the staff at home (rightly)
So who the hell are you to judge me?

No I don’t want my local to stay open because I want people to stay safe and follow advice. I am not judging you, I understand the finances my family have been affected financially as have many thousands of people.
It’s just if you or any other pup landlords stay open some people will still go and the elderly especially will be at significant risk. Surely you understand that.
I think the virtual pub is a great idea, I know you don’t want people to be isolated but their safety is paramount.

Passthebubbly · 17/03/2020 00:04

And for all those showing me articles, yes I know, my question is will it make you stop going to your local for a drink?
My pub was quiet but far from empty tonight so trying to gauge opinion. An well aware of the news

ShiftyOwl · 17/03/2020 00:04

I’ve not been to a pub for 5 years, it’s what I bloody hate about where I live. I’m miles away from a pub.
How ironic that the one thing that has caused my own depression may well keep me alive.

BigChocFrenzy · 17/03/2020 00:08

Best of luck, Passthebubbly and to all other small businesses trying to stay afloat

That's a great idea to offer delivery, since you do food as well

Stick a sign on your doors of what you can deliver, with your mobile number
Print off flyers and hand them to all your customers when they pay

It could really be useful especially to your elderly regulars who might not want to do much shopping or cook

I suggested to my NDN who has a hotel, that he could advertise to the elderly who live alone and would like to self-isolate somewhere safe and with service, shopping etc for a few months.
He's organising that now.

imo, that's the best opportunity for some small businesses:
offer services that are useful to people in this crisis

BigChocFrenzy · 17/03/2020 00:09

Insurance companies are being utter bastards to refuse Coronavirus payouts
Nursery owners on MN have said they have experienced this too

btw, it might be better if the govt actually ordered closures, instead of just advising people to avoid going out,
because it should make it easier to claim, rather than claiming due to lack of customers

Passthebubbly · 17/03/2020 00:13

MyDcAreMarvel I completely understand what you are saying as I have a severely sick mum and many elderly customers.
However this is my job, my business And how I feed my kids. I came in here to cause opinion and will close before forced to do so if I feel necessary. To be honest I think that time is over the next few days and I will take the hit of that knowing I have done what I feel is correct for my customers staff and family.
I truly hope you feel good knowing in all of the helpful comments on here either in support of closing or not you were the only one who made me feel like shit with your post. CongatulTions.

The govt advice relates to avoiding 'smaller spaces' could you restrict the numbers to x people to ensure social distancing can happen in the pub and advertise this strategy along with your scrupulous hygiene? Remember hygiene means all contact points. I suspect you'll only have another week to stay open anyhow before govt forces closures. Best of luck staying afloat. Flowers

GinnyStrupac · 17/03/2020 00:25

Enough of that, OP. You just needed to say 'Get aat a my pub - you're baarred!' Grin

Passthebubbly · 17/03/2020 00:27

We are working our asses off hygiene wise we are a very small but busy place. We are always up on hygiene but are hyper aware now and will remain that way

The government are absolute fuckers for not shutting the pubs and venues. If they did that, then they could claim on insurance for loss of business.

But as it's only a recommendation, they can't claim and loads of them will likely go under.

Don't know what the government are playing at.
