Oh op I really feel for you. We have two lovely pubs and two lovely tea rooms in our little village, and I am so worried we will lose them because of all this. They are all posting on social media pleading for their existence with photos of their hand sanitiser and spaced out tables, desperately pointing out they’re still open.

I would go and support them, but Dh read me the riot act. He’s right of course.

I'm not going to pubs or bars but would consider a local one if they made clear that they were following adequate practices of this sort.

  • The staff were fully trained properly in handling glasswear in a hygenic way - ie. they do not EVER touch the drinking surfaces of the glass (round the rim) with their hands and never rest or touch (the dirty outside) of a bottle on the rim of a glass. Wine glasses handled by the stem only and the bowl of the glass not touched. Not even in coronavirus times, it's surprising how many restaurant or bar staff just don't get this. It tends to be only better restaurants and bars where this is practiced routinely. *If you serve food, the same for cutlery and plates - no surfaces that touch a customers mouth are touched or handled by a bare hand. All cutlery is passed by handles only.
  • High contact surfaces (door handles, tables etc) are being cleaned regularly - once an hour or between customer changes. *Staff are frequently washing hands with soap and water and/or are wearing hygene gloves.
  • Social distancing between tables and chairs - probably requires removing some of the tables to make more space

That's my point, dishingout, certainly in France they started out by just asking people to stay at home - but they didn't, so now they've had to enforce it. I think the same will happen here.

Olawisk · 16/03/2020 22:47

I’d still go.
Of places are still open il be going out Friday night.

I went into Cardiff on a night out Saturday evening, shopping all day sat.
My partner went to Cheltenham races Friday, it was packed.

I plan to carry on as normal until everything is actually closed and I can’t.

bemoreeverything · 16/03/2020 22:48

@Olawisk

Why?

Olawisk · 16/03/2020 22:49

Why what?

ChillinInMyBacta · 16/03/2020 22:50

I'm hearing local cafes and restaurants are trying to convert to take/away delivery options to try and keep some revenue and staff, Uber eats and like will increase exponentially.

pallisers · 16/03/2020 22:52

I'm on line right now buying gift cards for the two local restaurants (one fancy one casual) that are forced to close for the moment. I would hate them not to be here so am encouraging anyone who uses them to buy gift cards. Maybe that would be on option Venus?

Passthebubbly · 16/03/2020 22:56

Gift cards are a fab idea keeps revenue coming in.
We are a very small but multi award winning pub including pint perfection awards. My staff all follow strict hygiene rules out with the current situation. I think the next few days will be interesting and busy for dh and I. We have so many elderly regulars that we will be looking after but we will miss our tourist family.

McCanne · 16/03/2020 22:57

No, not going anywhere except to work and the shop if needed. Will make sure to use the local independent shop and not a supermarket.

DowntownAbby · 16/03/2020 22:57

I'm aghast that so many on here are saying they'll carry on going to pubs because they don't want them to go out of business.

Are you truly hard of fucking thinking?

Jesus Christ!

HooverVacuum · 16/03/2020 22:59

@comictern I totally agree

Look at the pictures here of people hanging out in groups in parks, drinking beer on the banks of the Seine. It looks like a summer holiday camp not a time when there is a rampant highly dangerous virus. It's amazing people aren't taking it more seriously no wonder they have had to clamp down.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 16/03/2020 22:59

I'm in an at risk group so it'll be a while before I go to a pub. But now all I want to do is go to a pub! It hadn't crossed my mind really until they said to avoid it. Reverse psychology at its best there

HooverVacuum · 16/03/2020 23:01

My staff all follow strict hygiene rules out with the current situation.

My point was that you need to let people know this clearly - signs on the door type thing- if you want to keep trading.

Personally I'm not going to pubs but if you want to keep your business open, this is the kind of thing that people need to know and be visibly reassured of.

comictern · 16/03/2020 23:01

Perhaps the govt needs to push harder on the angle of NHS care for other conditions. So yes, if you're young and healthy, you're unlikely to suffer seriously from corona virus. But what if you break your leg? Or have a car crash? Or you get pregnant and have a complication? Or get alcohol poisoning from all these nights out you'll still be having? Would you still like there to be any NHS capacity available to effectively treat you? If so, then perhaps think a bit harder before you recklessly contribute to the spread of the virus.

MyDcAreMarvel · 16/03/2020 23:03

*So whilst I will take precautions, yes, I'll show them some support. I doubt my lunch will make much difference to their overheads, but they must be distraught right now.
@sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea and because of people like you they need to close pubs completely. How much clearer could avoid pubs be! You are not being supportive you are being selfish. More people will die by ignoring advice!

MyDcAreMarvel · 16/03/2020 23:04

We have so many elderly regulars that we will be looking after but we will miss our tourist family.
@Passthebubbly you look after you elderly regulars by telling them to stay at home and closing! What is wrong with you.

Potkettlexx · 16/03/2020 23:05

My argument with myself, is that whilst I’m having to go to work (large bank) dealing with money all day long (and we know how dirty and germ ridden that is) as well as customers coming in coughing and spluttering and heavy breathing over my face (by leaning over my desk when they could just stand normally) then I feel I should be able to go to the pub!

Whether I will or not is a different matter but I’m being exposed to all sorts in my work life that is more risky than a couple hours at a quiet pub. Sat in a corner with DP. I will assume no elderly people will be there and if they are, well then they’re playing with fire imo.

I also say it as someone that has no contact with elderly relatives etc.. if I had an elderly parent I had to care for that would be different

On another note I was informed by a customer today that she came back from Spain 2 days ago. Went straight back to work and straight to my till!!!! Handing over money 🙄

FizzAfterSix · 16/03/2020 23:07

I’m still eating and drinking in pubs etc, while I’m healthy and it’s legal.
We have to consider people’s livelihoods as well and factor in people losing their jobs and even their homes.

MulticolourMophead · 16/03/2020 23:12

Was due to play a darts match on Wednesday, I guess it'll be off for now.

Derbygerbil · 16/03/2020 23:13

But surly infectious disease is on there?

In a different industry but same issue with cover. On our cover it lists 20+ diseases, such as the bubonic plague and polio... Only those specific ones are covered. Insurers are adamant they won’t cover. I can understand why they are sticking to their guns, though it sucks.... Worldwide the scale of the liabilities would destroy the insurance industry.

buttermilkwaffles · 16/03/2020 23:14

We are only a few weeks behind Italy, Spain and France and the NHS potentially being overwhelmed. Macron/French government is saying tonight "save lives, stay at home."

You could have the disease yet not be showing any symptoms, but infecting others. Do you really want that on your conscience? Going to the pub is not essential.

confusedandtired99 · 16/03/2020 23:15

Yanbu but the government should
Be putting provisions into place for you to close without loosing out!

FizzAfterSix · 16/03/2020 23:16

@MyDcAreMarvel
Please could you stop this bossy hysteria.
It’s not helping anyone.

I spoke to my 83 year old father today, he is still lunching at the pub, having his hair cut in the high street and looking forward to attending a business meeting this week.
He has no intention of stopping doing any of these things and good on him.

@Passthebubbly good on you. It’s no fun getting old and I’m sure your older clients really appreciate being made a fuss of.

Passthebubbly · 16/03/2020 23:16

@ MyDcAreMarvel - sorry but what is wrong with you? How dare you even say that to me? The entire reason I am asking this question here is that I want to do the right thing by my customers. Some of them see nobody but my team in an day - we are their family and we will look after them when we close
However .. this small business feeds my kids and pays my mortgage. I have a seriously sick mother and want to do the best I can for everyone for as long as I can whilst safe. I am good person but what the fuck is wrong with you!!!
