YABU yes
Yanbu no

Shameless I know. I have a small bar. People still coming but wondering at what point we should close our doors.

Don’t close until you are told to. The advice currently is for healthy people who aren’t at risk (and don’t have symptoms) to carry on

That is not the advice at all please read the news before making such statements the advice is to avoid unnecessary social contact

Of course I shall be following the advice given I do not want to risk mine and my families health and risk spreading this awful virus further

I hope small business as your op will be covered by insurance (I don’t know if you will) but people carrying on socialising as before are utterly selfish

emmylousings · 16/03/2020 21:56

'Non-essential contact' is so vague, it is wide open to interpretation by employers etc. I work in a college - not due in tll weds - but as it stands we are teaching this week. Is that non-essential contact? I want to work, but I want to know where I stand with my employer. I feel like the govt might be passing the buck down to other organisations, as opposed to actually taking unpopular decisions itself.

Passthebubbly · 16/03/2020 21:58

I too have a severely at risk isolated mother and a small business that I have to maintain as long as I can as insurance won’t pay out.
I have staff who depend on their wages to pay their mortgage it’s a bloody nightmare.

If you read the government guidance, it explains it there.

OP I really feel for you

Frankly I’d go in theory but in practice the social judgement thing would put me off. Sorry.

Devlesko · 16/03/2020 22:05

No, I value mine and others lives.

comictern · 16/03/2020 22:12

For goodness' sake, to all the people saying 'I'm at more risk at work so I'll still go out'. The point is, every new person you come into contact with is an additional risk. Yes, you might be more at risk of catching it at work - but you're only going to still be at work if you have to be (ie you can't work at home). But every person you come into contact with socially is an additional and unnecessary risk, both of picking it up and passing it on. Which is why you avoid all non-essential social contact. Why is this so hard to understand?

comictern · 16/03/2020 22:13

By the way, sorry OP, I really really feel for you.

PerpetualCircle · 16/03/2020 22:17

I think there is a hardcore of pub goers who will still visit their local. Ours is full of old men and nothing will get in the way of their pint.

I also think as the weeks pass and people get cabin fever, there will be a fair few pub visits on the downlow.
Generally though a catastrophic hit for the hospitality sector.

Passthebubbly · 16/03/2020 22:19

Thank you 😘

Why is this so hard to understand?

Perhaps some people just can't accept that there's a deadly virus doing the rounds. Maybe they think it won't affect them. Maybe they couldn't give a toss. Who knows?

Iwalkinmyclothing · 16/03/2020 22:20

No. I really wish I could but if we are being asked to avoid non essential social contact then that's what I will do. I get 4 buses a day, to and from work on a large site with resident patients. I imagine I will get ot anyway. But I will spread it to fewer people if I'm not spending time in pubs and cafes and so on.

Angelou79 · 16/03/2020 22:20

Check BI extension action of competent authorities, currently insurers are saying no comment when asked will this cover it rather than no

occulus · 16/03/2020 22:21

I'm a regular at a family run Tap and Grind. I'll still support them and others like them for as long as I sensibly can.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 16/03/2020 22:23

No, I'm sorry. That would be really unwise.

Onemorehitandillcrumble · 16/03/2020 22:26

Not a forced closure so don’t close until you are told

Not a forced closure so the government don’t have to financially help I imagine. They have “advised” that we don’t go, the majority of us won’t go, establishments will fail.....but the government won’t have to compensate because they didn’t enforce closure.

bemoreeverything · 16/03/2020 22:28

Where do you get this from Confused

Duchessofblandings · 16/03/2020 22:30

No.

WorriedAboutMom · 16/03/2020 22:31

Lol at Boris saying he has faith that the British public are 'mature enough' to adhere to the advice for the sake of their & their community's health (in response to a reporter's query about why he wasn't using force). Nope. 🙈

comictern · 16/03/2020 22:32

I imagine we will follow France very quickly. They have had to properly lock down today (100,000 police to enforce it) because the government is despairing of the fact that people just kept carrying on as normal, eating out, going to bars etc, despite being clearly told not to. It looks like the same will have to happen here, if MN is anything to go by.

Greenpop21 · 16/03/2020 22:33

No I won’t and it’s my birthday this week too.

HairyFloppins · 16/03/2020 22:37

I've advised my 18 year old not to go out clubbing and to the pub. She's cross but she understands as her dad has some lung damage. Her friend couldn't see the issue. It's hard getting the teens to understand.

Ciwirocks · 16/03/2020 22:40

Healthy people carrying on and going to the pub against advice may well pass the virus onto others. The more people who get infected now the more we will struggle with adequate icu beds in a few weeks time. We need to stay away from each other and slow the spread of this virus down. Think of the bigger picture, we are all going to have a shit couple of months but hopefully this way less people will die!

DishingOutDone · 16/03/2020 22:41

I am confused as to why the UK government has said they'd like us to do these things, avoid pubs etc., when in Italy and France the government simply ordered places to close.

Its as if Boris wants it left up to us so that he can say well we didn't insist we just suggested it, so its not our fault ...

GinnyStrupac · 16/03/2020 22:41

I have rarely needed to go to a friendly pub more, OP, and I'm really sorry I can't come to yours - but we have been strongly advised to follow social distancing so regrettably it has to be a no.

Wishing you all the best.
