To go to the gym as normal?

I know they are seen as awash with germs but mine is pretty clean. I always wipe down the equipment well before and after using, especially where my hands are going to go, and wash hands as soon as I’ve finished.

I really don’t want to stop as I’m doing well losing weight and getting fitter, and exercise is good for the immune system anyway! I would need to stop going for months to avoid the virus.

AIBU? Slightly concerned about taking the virus home to family.

I have. I’m here now. It’s manic, far busier than normal.

reenon · 16/03/2020 10:30

I'm still going to the gym. Like you I have always used the anti bac wipes to wipe down equipment before and after using it... I've always had really strange looks. Now everyone is doing it.

So for me, there is no difference, just trying to be a bit more mindful of not touching my face. I'd go mad if I couldn't go to the gym. Home workouts are just not quite the same.

Tellmetruth4 · 16/03/2020 10:37

I’m on my way to the gym at lunchtime. I’ve been doing really well and even last weekend friends were commenting on my weight loss and how well I look.

I know its minor in the grand scheme of things but I’d be so disappointed if they shut the gym for months. I have images of me wearing floaty dresses with slim thighs this summer. I’ve worked so hard!

HeartyGreenSalad · 16/03/2020 10:39

I still go

Bloomburger · 16/03/2020 10:40

If you're not exhibiting any symptoms or self isolating due to a family member having symptoms no reason not to go.

angelaEhen · 16/03/2020 10:41

Don't use the steam rooms that's the most dangerous place

SerenDippitty · 16/03/2020 10:42

I want to keep going too to keep up the programme one of the trainers has done for me.

MinnieMountain · 16/03/2020 10:42

I'm going swimming tomorrow. DH is going to the gym as normal.

honeyloops · 16/03/2020 10:45

This is the dilemma I'm having - I've been working really hard and have finally, finally got into a routine of going, so I'm going to use the gym as normal (with lots of handwashing and antibac wipes), but not the pool (because it's a filth soup at the best of times!).

Tellmetruth4 · 16/03/2020 10:46

Is the sauna ok? I assumed because it was boiling that no virus could survive outside for more than a few seconds?

bengalcat · 16/03/2020 10:48

I'm still going . Classes generally full as per normal at the moment .

thecatsthecats · 16/03/2020 10:49

Mine was deserted on Saturday. Really put me off my workout.

Travis1 · 16/03/2020 10:49

Yup we're going tonight

HopefullyAnonymous · 16/03/2020 10:51

I’m going later. It was very quiet yesterday but I prefer that.

MorganKitten · 16/03/2020 10:53

Mine is dead and it’s great.

marriednotdead · 16/03/2020 10:53

My DS works in a gym as a fitness coach and personal trainer. They are cleaning every normally touched surface such as door handles and equipment every 2 hours- it takes a whole hour to complete the cleaning circuit and they’re going through Dettol at speed.
Many of his PT clients are wfh so have postponed their sessions with him but the gym remains open for now.
Believe me, they are doing their damndest to keep it clean so everyone can stay safe.

timeforawine · 16/03/2020 10:55

I'm still going at lunch, weight loss is for once going well so i really need to continue until i'm told i can't.

ladybee28 · 16/03/2020 10:59

An idea to chew over from someone in a country on lockdown and with relative who is now hospitalised after contact with someone not showing symptoms – the size of your thighs are not as important as other people's health.

And for those of you waiting 'until we're told not to'... do you wait for instructions on everything you do, or do you just reserve the use common sense for the situations that aren't life-threatening for thousands of people?

This shit pisses me off beyond belief.

angelaEhen · 16/03/2020 11:03

Anywhere with a lot of moisture in the air is more risky I wouldn't use a steam room, sauna or even be on pool side.

My husband is a gym manager and is not using these areas, they are taking cleaning very seriously and are spending all day cleaning everything though

Nanalisa60 · 16/03/2020 11:10

I’m still going to the gym but only doing the spin class in the spin studio as I’m taking my own wipes cleaning the bike before I go on it and cleaning when I leave. Not going in the main gym, still went running and walking at the weekend, as I think being fit helps your immune system.

I am feeling a lot better since I Watched a lady doctor on breakfast TV this morning who has had the virus , but that does not mean I’m not very worried about people with underlying heath problems , and people over 70.

eMmAsuper8 · 16/03/2020 11:24

I'm still going and mine isn't getting any quieter as of yet!

mummyof2boys30 · 16/03/2020 11:33

Still going here too, though ours is a small gym in a wee village and maybe only 10max per class at the minute. I work in a supermarket so am gonna be more prone to coming into contact with it at work

trumpisaflump · 16/03/2020 11:37

I went to my classes this morning and they were mobbed. I love exercise and I'm currently well and government advice is to continue normal activity so why wouldn't I go?
I work in a hospital so I'm more likely to be infected there than the gym.

WeirdCatLady · 16/03/2020 11:39

I am still swimming and doing my workout classes but I’m not using the weights room at the mo. I have weights and equipment at home so I’ll be using that instead. My dd is immunocompromised so I have to be extra careful.

Lweji · 16/03/2020 11:42

I work in a hospital so I'm more likely to be infected there than the gym.

Have you considered trying not to infect the people at the gym?
