YouGov -'61% of Britons support the decision to ask over 70s to self-isolate for up to four months. Support is weakest among those aged 65+ (47%), with a comfortable majority of all other ages groups backing the call.'

Twasbambam · 16/03/2020 19:47

Emily Morgan - 'Here’s the clarity: pregnant women, over 70s and those with chronic illness very strongly advised to avoid gatherings, pubs, cinema, try to work from home. Those with serious conditions, 1.2 million people, must be shielded and mustn’t go out from Friday.'

But that's not even clear!

Which conditions?

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 19:49

We’re all strongly advised to do that but they clearly said these groups were different Confused

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 19:49

Apparently doctors will ring the 1.2 million to tell them.
I presume that includes most residents of nursing and care homes.

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 19:50

Alex Wickham - '— mitigation strategy not possible without NHS surge capacity being exceeded many times over
— 'In the UK, this conclusion has only been reached in the last few days'
— So: 'We conclude suppression is the only viable strategy' ' .

fedup21 · 16/03/2020 19:51

But that's not even clear!

Nope!

What about pregnant women who can’t WFH? Do they stay at home or go in anyway?

mrshoho · 16/03/2020 19:56

The wasted time it took them to realise may still have a catastrophic effect. We had a hint that London is our current hotspot although yet again they were careful in only giving us vague information. It's like they throw in it there so when the shit hits they can say well we did tell you all.

theskyispurple · 16/03/2020 19:58

It's so confusing!!!!!! I can't bloody work out who is supposed to do what...
So my friend been isolating due to symptoms from last Wednesday. As I understand it her and now her whole household all need to isolate until a week on Wednesday - is that right? Even if she is now asymptomatic?

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 19:59

Paul Brand - 'Important clarification from Department of Health:
Only the very vulnerable should "shield" themselves, i.e. self-isolate, for 12 weeks. That's over 70s with underlying health problems or the severely ill.
Others over 70, with health issues or pregnant, should reduce contact.'

mumoftwodc · 16/03/2020 20:00

@MotherOfLittlePeople I had my smear today

fedup21 · 16/03/2020 20:00

Others over 70, with health issues or pregnant, should reduce contact.'

So, how do pregnant working women reduce contact?

Loppy10 · 16/03/2020 20:01

France to step up isolation measures
The French president, Emmanuel Macron, is telling the nation people’s movements will be severely limited, saying those who have ignored the government’s advice to isolate have put the health of other people at risk. He has ordered citizens to stay in their homes and only come out where it’s absolutely necessary.

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 20:01

Natasha Clark - 'And everyone in the middle, around 20million - including those who are pregnant and have underlying health conditions - should try not to leave their homes if they can, and avoid any crowded spaces immediately. UNDERLYING HEALTH CONDITIONS:

  • chronic (long-term) respiratory diseases, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema or bronchitis
  • chronic heart disease, such as heart failure
  • chronic kidney disease
  • chronic liver disease, such as hepatitis.'
BeardedMum · 16/03/2020 20:03

I am going to keep my ds off school for the next 2 weeks. We will quote government’s
advise to self isolate. It is too far outside my comfort zone to send ds to school. I will review again in 2 weeks time. I know children don’t get it that badly but I don’t want my child to be a guinea pig.im I will watch and wait.

Xenia · 16/03/2020 20:09

I am glad they have kept the schools open.

On the question on should pregnant women work - this is just guidance - they will not be arresting them if they do work and there is no evidence yet it is a risk for them so those who cannot afford not to work in my view can probably fairly safely carry on and that will be the better option for them and their families who need the money.

Sharing:

We have just been sent a medical alert that no one is to use anti inflammatories (eg brufen, Voltarol, naproxen and there are others) for pain or high temperature. Use paracetamol instead. There seems to be a link between severe cases of covid19 affecting young people with no underlying illnesses and taking anti inflammatories. Initial reports started coming from French Drs on Friday. This has been confirmed by infectious diseases consultants here - there are 4 young people in ICU in Cork who have no underlying illnesses - all were taking anti inflammatories and there are concerns this has caused a more severe illness. We have been asked to spread the message. French tv and radio apparently broadcast the same warning today

Fyi...

Babyfairy0923 · 16/03/2020 20:13

To me the 3 of them looked in over their heads today. Very worrying times.

bananacakeZ · 16/03/2020 20:14

Loppy yes I know Macron has his detractors but found myself wishing he was my leader watching that.

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 20:15

I can’t watch the good ones I get envy and sadness

TimeforTea20 · 16/03/2020 20:17

Mobster Where is that shared from? You really need to give your sources if you’re giving specific medication advice.
