DD had temp of 38.2 and sore throat. Do I send her to school tomorrow?

Hope your daughter feels better soon OP.

Can I jump on the bandwagon and ask for some advice too. My toddler also has a high temp (no cough) so he is staying off nursery for next 7 days. I've decided to keep my other two DC's off school too but I couldn't find clear guidance on whether this is required (we will be anyway as would rather be safe than sorry) We also had a few visitors to the house today - should they all be self isolating too??

MajesticWhine · 15/03/2020 23:27

isla, keeping your other DCs off is not part of the official advice, as far as I can tell, but it does make sense because it is pretty difficult to isolate from your own children. As for the visitors you have had, no. They don't need to self isolate, but I think it would be the right thing to do to tell them that your DC has symptoms and that you are isolating.

This thread is possibly the most chilling thing I’ve read so far on Coronavirus.

OP how can you POSSIBLY not know that we are in a global pandemic? How can you possibly not check the news headlines quickly once a day to see the latest??

So many people working so hard, taking risks and sacrificing to try and mitigate this as much as we can and it all goes to shit because people can’t be bothered to take the tiniest step to educate themselves properly.

isla2009 · 15/03/2020 23:37

Thanks Majestic

I've been googling away and it isn't clear but self isolating the household does seem to be the sensible thing to do. I have informed all our visitors but they are now also unsure of what to do. If he does have it they could now be incubating the virus and spreading it unknowingly. Really difficult to know what's best. I think they'll be carrying on as normal and if so, it's easy to see how it spreads so easily!

C33P0 · 15/03/2020 23:37

No, FGS, how is this even a question?

anxiousnow · 15/03/2020 23:40

Isla, I find that bit confusing too. It would make sense for everyone who has been in contact to take precautions but I agree, the guidelines don't actually state that. Neither does 111. Scary really. Hope everyone gets well soon.

Mittens030869 · 16/03/2020 00:22

Schools handle this differently too. My DDs' school says that children should only be kept at home if they're actually symptomatic, not a a precaution, otherwise it's an unauthorised absence. My DNephews and DNiece, however, had to all be off school when one of them had a virus, so my DSis had all three of them at home.

To me, it makes a lot of sense to keep all the kids in a family off as a precaution if one of them has flu symptoms, especially right now.

fretaway · 16/03/2020 00:41

My dh works in a healthcare role with the general public. If he started to feel ill I would most definitely isolate all the dc and myself for 7 days as stated in the guidelines.
Given we are all in the same household, I wouldn't want to risk any illness being passed onto others.

Unfortunately dh has also come across some extremely ignorant parents bringing their offspring along with coughs and fevers. Not willing to give up their routine, their life. You just despair.

Quarantined · 16/03/2020 01:37

Fretaway no, the guidelines do not say that you and the dcs have to self isolate if your Dh becomes ill. Only the person with symptoms is what the guidelines says.

CuppaZa · 16/03/2020 01:44

FFS Hmm

JinglingHellsBells · 16/03/2020 07:25

why @hurryupautumn would you prefer the judgement of a teacher, rather than official medical advice?

If the teacher says send her, does that make you feel better and stop you taking responsibility for your own daughter and the nation's health?

Why do you think a teacher is an expert?

I cannot believe how blase you appear . You don't seem to get that this virus is a killer for people at risk and how a child with it, who may be well enough for school, could spread it to staff or other children who will then pass it onto other people who could die.

is that so hard to understand?

Coulddowithanap · 16/03/2020 07:45

Covid 19 aside, i wouldn't send my child to school with a high temperature anyway.

MoltonSilver · 16/03/2020 07:47

FFS. I give up.

MRex · 16/03/2020 07:59

@isla2009 - the advice is clear that they don't HAVE to until they get symptoms. We've all been clearly told who is vulnerable and why there are separate measures to try to protect them, so I would hope that everyone who's been in contact would be thoughtful enough to stay away from any vulnerable people, in particular anyone over 60 (which doesn't seem old, but is apparently old enough for issues), immune compromised or with a heart condition / diabetes / respiratory condition including asthma. If it's easy for them to self isolate or at least minimize any social contact by keeping their distance then great, if it isn't easy then they need to be alert for symptoms and mindful of having a plan for how they'll get home without being near anyone if they develop any while at work or otherwise out and about. People might also want to ask their employers, some employers might be keen for them to work from home regardless of national advice.

I'd have thought this was all common sense, but I'm starting to understand the government strategy a little better the more I see of how the general public behave.

oatmilk4breakfast · 17/03/2020 21:19

The guidelines were updated yesterday. Anyone with symptoms - household isolation.

MRex · 18/03/2020 09:34

For 14 days

Hoggleludo · 18/03/2020 09:41

Ok. So the government. Have told schools they are to use a Y code. Not only does this mean you keep your child off. The school LEGALLY have to use the correct code!!!! In this case it's a Y!!! Your school CANNOT AND SHOULD NOT tell you it's unauthorised!!!! The register is a LEGAL document.

BigGillsBigMac · 18/03/2020 09:44

Of course you fucking don't.

MrsEricBana · 18/03/2020 09:47

I can't actually believe this. And the snarky comments were warranted.

hurryupautumn · 18/03/2020 10:07

Thanks @Hoggleludo - I've been in contact with the school and have read up what her absence is marked down as. I think they call it 'exceptional circumstances'.

Hoggleludo · 18/03/2020 12:50

@hurryupautumn

Yep. That’s the Y code.

DuLANGDuLANGDuLANG · 18/03/2020 12:58

We got a call about the Y code yesterday. Definitely happening at our school.
