@whataballbag
All you can do really, is stay home as much as possible. The less people you come into contact with, the less chance of catching it.

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 16/03/2020 08:27

Quite worrying that the BMA don't have a clue what the Government is planning!! (BBC interview now)

malpa · 16/03/2020 08:27

Helenj1977: Did someone hack Worldometer??

Some idiot changed the Deaths to almost 900,000. It was obvious it was fake though because it screwed up all the other figures.

AIBU to assume that a billionaire businessman like trump would understand how the economy worked?

But I guess so.

But then, when you think about all his failed businesses and bankruptcy, I guess it falls into line. He's not a businessman, he's just a bully. And you don't have faith in a bully in a time of crisis.

Trump is a failure, and will go down in history as the man who sank the world economy and caused needless deaths.

It's true what Warren buffet said. When the tide goes out, you see who is swimming naked.

Givemeabreakpls · 16/03/2020 08:33

I’ve been told to work from home this week...already been asked this morning to take care of someone’s child (off school with a cold) while parents work. I have an immunocompromised df and have had to say no, I’m considering pulling my own child out of school to minimise risk. somehow feel this will be a regular ask.

Newjez · 16/03/2020 08:33

@Sofacat
It would have cost Boris's mates too much money to lock down the country. Ironic now, as this will cost them much more money.

sovielverloren · 16/03/2020 08:36

Just arrived at Waterloo. Could easily wfh but not yet authorised so here I am. Clear that other workplaces are very much better as it is really quiet. I had an unheard of double seat to myself the whole way in. So at least I can keep my distance.

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 08:37

Anyone with reluctant Dhs or other I sent this and it helped.

From social media, I have read tens of accounts like this.....

Hello all, I am writing to you from my fourth day in coronavirus quarantine, here in Barcelona, Spain. This is a message to everyone- family, friends, former colleagues, peers and teammates back home (or wherever you are in the world). Please take this virus seriously. I want to share with you what is happening here now, what the consequences are of a delayed response. I hope this will help you to understand that all jokes and toilet paper memes aside, your action needs to be taken now.

A week ago here in Spain, we only talked about coronavirus. We already had some cases, but it just didn’t seem that bad. We saw the suffering in Italy and said “That won’t happen here.” Changes were not made. People still went out on the weekend, went to the gym, went to work, to school, etc. Preventing the spread of the virus was not a priority. Fast forward just 1 WEEK: Spain is now in a state of emergency. The virus is here and it is tearing through this country. I have coronavirus. My friends have coronavirus. Parents of children have coronavirus. Teachers, students, business people, researchers, politicians, bus drivers, etc. have coronavirus. In a matter of days, the number of confirmed cases spiked from just a few hundred to well into the thousands. Hospitals and medical clinics are completely and entirely exhausted, operating at over-capacity, with quickly depleting resources and staff. Hundreds of doctors, nurses and other medical personnel have caught the virus and have been issued to quarantine. Those who remain are working 24/7, non stop. It is not just the elderly or the immunocompromised who are checking in for treatment- people of ALL ages are needing medical care. With each passing day, the death toll rises and the situation grows more severe.

In just 1 WEEK the coronavirus has caused Spain to crumble and it appears the worst has yet to come. Now having one of the fastest rates of COVID-19 contagion in the entire world, the Spanish Prime Minister stated that the number of cases could top 10,000 by early next week- almost double the current level. Just yesterday, cases rose by 1,500. If the pressure on the health care system is already unbearable, then what could possibly happen in the following days? We could ask our dear friends in Italy, as they are about a week ahead of us, with thousands of infected people trying to get into hospitals with only a few spaces left. With doctors and nurses having to CHOOSE who to save and who to let die because there are not enough medical professionals, supplies or space left to treat the growing number of patients. The Spanish government can see we are following in Italy’s footsteps and the pressure is on, to make up for a lack of action taken in the beginning.

All schools and universities have shut down. Public events and sports games have been cancelled. Roads have been blocked, entire regions of the country are under lockdown and towns and villages have been quarantined. Businesses, cafes, restaurants, gyms, bars/cubs and shopping centres have all closed, with the exception of the supermarkets selling food and pharmacies. Police roam the streets to ensure people stay inside. The rest of the world can see the risk now too- 62 countries have suspended flights from Spain.

To think, if preventative action could have been taken just 1 week before, if the mindsets of people could have shifted 1 week earlier, we could be living a very different reality right now.

To all the people back home in Canada or wherever you may be, please understand that this virus will change things very quickly. Once it becomes an issue, it is very hard to control. Being proactive and taking precautions now is absolutely necessary; every day counts! Be diligent with your health practices and be responsible with your decision making to be out in public!!! Going to the bar, the mall, the movies, the gym, etc. is truly just not worth it right now!!! Save it for a week that isn’t potentially life threatening to you or the humans around you. Push for work weeks at home and online classes!! Nothing is worth the risk. Social distancing is CRITICAL. And if you are sitting there feeling like you don’t have to be cautious because you are young/healthy, PLEASE remember that we as human beings have a responsibility to look out for one another. You being careless could lead to the loss of someone’s grandmother or grandfather, someone's parent, someone’s coworker, or someone’s friend. That is what is happening here and it’s a lot more difficult to stop now that it’s started.

waspfig · 16/03/2020 08:37

Medical experts on BBC breakfast advising whole households to isolate if a family member has symptoms.

Anyone else feel like the experts are trying to get their own advice out in the hope that people follow it, even if it is against official government advice?

Helenj1977 · 16/03/2020 08:37

@malpa Thank you. Possibly a human error!

Newjez · 16/03/2020 08:41

@JayDot500
I agree with you totally. With the testing they are doing they have no idea how fast the water is coming out of the bucket. Hard to slow it down again when people are dying in the hundreds as Italy has shown. I agree we shouldn't stop everything yet. But we should slow things down until we know the rate of flow from the bucket.

Mittens030869 · 16/03/2020 08:41

Helenj1977 Thank you for asking. I started to be able to shift the mucus yesterday so I'm on the mend finally. I still haven't been tested, though, so I can't even be sure I've had COVID-19. If I haven't, then I dread to think what it would be like to have it. However, I'm fairly sure it was that.

Please be warned, though. Mine will be considered a mild form of COVID-19, because I didn't go to hospital. So 'mild' doesn't mean it will be the equivalent of a common cold. I was too tired to cough and the sputum blocked my throat, which had also become inflamed by the coughing.

So don't be lulled into a false sense of security.

waspfig · 16/03/2020 08:43

Bloody brilliant. Builders have turned up next door with their drills and radio. NOT a word from them or neighbours about what is going on. Looks like some kind of extension or conservatory?! As if being stuck at home wasn't going to be hard enough, now I have to listen to noise and shouting and blaring music all day long Angry

They're still going on about infected regions. Our childminder told me that they would have to self isolate for a week because her DH had just come back from Spain, which had been in lockdown.

Ironic. They've very likely been at risk anyway because I've probably had it and my DDs have been in school and at her house. Plus I think DD2 (8) may well have already had it. But because I'm not a confirmed case', our DDs are expected to continue going to school.

When are people going to get it that the UK IS an infected country? My cleaner was in Poland and can't return because flights to and from the UK have been cancelled. The US has done that too. So this stuff about 'infected regions' really isn't relevant anymore.

SansaSnark · 16/03/2020 09:01

So, for those interested, assemblies and evening events including parents evening cancelled at school. There are some staff self isolating but they can be covered in the normal way.

Message is keep calm and take sensible precautions.

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 16/03/2020 09:02

@Mittens030869 Totally! We're as infected as anywhere here in the UK, but we've just not seen this crystallise yet.

Dramadrama · 16/03/2020 09:04

Welcome to the world of working at home. Blank looks if you politely ask for radios to be turned down because you’re trying to meet a work deadline.

ofwarren · 16/03/2020 09:08

Labour MP Kate Osborne who represents the constituency of Jarrow in Tyne and Wear says she has been diagnosed with COVID-19 "following a period of self-isolation and subsequent testing"

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 09:09

I think anyone who is mid-extension building is going to regret that soon. They’ll stop going in.

Youngatheart00 · 16/03/2020 09:10

Does anyone know how/when they will suspend share trading? With the continued dramatic falls in share prices some of our biggest PLCs and banks are going to be worth nothing on paper despite obviously having an asset value.

bananacakeZ · 16/03/2020 09:16

I have the sense the British public are STILL not getting it. I have colleagues this morning loudly declaring that even if the organisation wants to shut down for a while they will protest as prefer being in the office.

That account from Spain is chilling, as so many Brits have continued to travel that is exactly what is coming. And people are so dense about it.

I have sent DC to school knowing that was a terrible idea, after keeping them in isolation all weekend, but going to take everything home today and not coming in tomorrow, I've had enough.

Number12 · 16/03/2020 09:18

Its hard to say when the LSE will suspend trading, its rare and unlikely though im surprised they haven't halted shorting stocks for a period of time. The FTSE level isn't that low and and the market know that this isn't financial problem and gains can be made back. It will make great punting after the peak hits... Though what Boris does next will have an immediate impact.

However the aviation industry..... And boris better not bail them out but that's personal opinion.

Alkaloise · 16/03/2020 09:20

News on the self-isolation home front here, which just goes to show what a clusterfuck the whole thing is.

I'm self-isolating (officially only as of yesterday, but symptoms have been there since last week, before advice changed).
Because I am self-isolating and I have a toddler who doesn't understand that mummy should have to hide away in her room all day, I have been around my whole family all weekend. My teenager has been advised by their school to stay off the week, too.

My husband (also a teacher) has been told to go into work regardless and only go home if he shows symptoms.

So now I'm at home poorly while looking after two kids (mind, the older is a great help, most of the time) and he is at work potentially infecting dozens of kids in his care.

Advice really does seem to depend on who you talk to.

Number12 · 16/03/2020 09:22

Also what the US are doing (corona wise) will be shoring us up in the markets. Despite massive falls on the DOW. The Americans like bit of drama, UK not so much but it does reflect.
