That for keeping us all up to date ofwarren. Hope you keep well - and totally understand where you're coming from.

Someone upthread said that a meeting is being held today... where did they get this info from?

MurrayTheMonk · 15/03/2020 08:31

Take care ofwarren x stay well x

BeijingBikini · 15/03/2020 08:31

All the people saying this is like 9/11 - sorry if I'm being dim, but I was quite small when 9/11 happened. What actually changed for the average person in the UK, apart from not being able to bring liquids on a plane?

Surely this virus is a lot worse?

mylulabbbbaaam · 15/03/2020 08:31

Using the death rate of 22, we have 17549 cases. I would kindly ask to correct me if you feel that this calculation is incorrect.

Destinysdaughter · 15/03/2020 08:35

OfWarren you have done brilliant work keeping these threads going, thank you so much.

MurrayTheMonk Some years ago I was in an Am Dram theatre company in London and we put on the play The Roses of Eyam which is about that time when that village went into lockdown due to the Plague. It's been very much on my mind since Wuhan went into lockdown. Such a crying shame for the rest of the world that they didn't manage to do what the brave pp of Eyam did.

MurrayTheMonk · 15/03/2020 08:35

Beijingbikini- it was more societal change I think-or a change in the psyche... we all went from 'it would never happen here' To 'we are in danger'. And in the first few days and weeks there was a lot of confusion and fear.

woodencoffeetable · 15/03/2020 08:36

that was a couple of days ago, as testing is quite a bit behind.
this is a new illness, no treatment yet, no vaccine yet.
and it is spreading fast across the world.

it has already killed many people and will kill many more.

picklemewalnuts · 15/03/2020 08:37

Bikini, it was a wake up call-
the massive number of people, deliberately and carefully killed while going about their business.
That aeroplanes could be weapons
That no one is safe, anywhere, ever.

Then security, liquids on planes, shoes off for checking etc. Minor really, though slow and irritating.

picklemewalnuts · 15/03/2020 08:38

Can whoever is doing the new thread do it now please? You are at 910 already!

Not me, I've only popped in occasionally since Thread 15 or so!

MurrayTheMonk · 15/03/2020 08:38

Destinysdaughter-I love that play. There is also a great book called 'the year of our sorrows' if anyone wants to immerse themselves further in ancient response to Similar circumstances.... it has a happy ending so it might actually be perversely reassuring...

fedup21 · 15/03/2020 08:39

So, the advice seems to be that they’re going to tell people over 70 to self isolate so they are protected but the rest of us need to pretty much carry on as normal?

We need to continue exposing ourself to hundreds of different people and their germs daily and hope the ‘herd immunity’ bollocks works even though we are hearing that it does actually seem you can be infected more than once.

Whilst I am going about my normal daily life of working 12 hour days, the government want me to also make sure that my elderly parents have food and medicine and everything they need to stay healthy, plus be socially responsible to my elderly neighbours?

Wartime mentally of everyone helping each other out will work to a certain degree but not if people are not being given any space or chance to do it. If people were told to WFH, there would be time and wriggle room for people to help out others. If they’re stuck on a train and the tube for 3-4 hours a day unnecessarily, they won’t have that time.

Ofsted still say they’re continuing to inspect schools FFS. It’s still business as normal for most people but we’re scared.

It feels like we aren’t being safeguarded at all.

1happyhippie · 15/03/2020 08:40

Take care @ofwarren x

Wondering what today will bring. Not sure if we will hear anything today, but I hope we do.
Some of the plans they are putting in place make sense. I just hope they have covered as many issues as possible.
I am getting concerned now where this new measure regarding isolating over 70s leaves me.
I work in a care home with the most at risk. But I also have children who would be expected to still attend school. Most of our staff have dc at home, who would be going to school and mixing with many others.
I fear the virus could easily be brought into the carehome without us even knowing with lack of testing!

Very frightening time!

MurrayTheMonk · 15/03/2020 08:41

Yep, and again-what about elderly people
That have care going in?
The carers aren't being protected by wider societal lockdown, so neither are the older people. It's a nonsense really.

Newjez · 15/03/2020 08:41

I feel like there is this huge tidal wave of virus hundreds of feet high just teetering over us ready to crash down on us all. There is panic in the air. The virus is coming.

Quartz2208 · 15/03/2020 08:42

@Beijingbikini a lot changed in terms of how you viewed the world. The weekend before I was at Disneyland Paris and there was a bomb scare we all sat around outside the terminal laughing and moaning about being delayed because we just assumed it was that someone left a bag accidentally or was playing a joke. After 9/11 that naiviety left and you felt that something could happen at anytime. I was in London for the 2005 bombings and that was the same - a constant sense you were not safe when you going about your daily life. Constantly on guard on the tube the fear that a bomb could go off.

Plane travel has changed considerably (and not just liquids) American airports were pretty much open up until the gates

That feeling is the same here, DS has a cough and rather than just assuming he has a cold there is a feeling of being unsafe. That something could happen

TheGirlFromStoryville · 15/03/2020 08:47

Unfortunately the dc have a fever starting from Monday for 7 days. And a new cough starting for the 7 days after that

Coincidentally my Ds will be having exactly the same.

My DH is in the 'at risk' group due to high BP and also Ds has autism /Adhd, not a risk factor as such but I'm not taking any chances.

woodencoffeetable · 15/03/2020 08:49

as quarz says. 911 changes mindsets a lot.
I always check out the emergency exit anywhere I go, always look for alternative routes home (I waled 20 kilometer home after 7/7), never wear uncomfortable shoes for walking/take trainers, never take more luggage than I can carry for a mile...

ajandjjmum · 15/03/2020 08:49

There's masses of time for a new thread to be started yet - it just gets confusing when there are two threads running side by side, when the next one is started too early imo. Or I'm just thick! Grin

Random18 · 15/03/2020 08:51

There are some things in will always remember exactly where in was when in find out.

Dunblane was one.

9/11 and 7/7 too.

I remember being at work on 9/11. We heard I think from someone on a call that the 1st plane had hit
We couldn't get online no matter how hard we tried.
An old radio was dug out. And we were basically in shock the rest of the day.

This is different in many way. I think this is going to change the world in so many ways.

Hard and very sad times ahead for so many of us.

2020 will be a year that is talked about for evermore.

Ledkr · 15/03/2020 08:58

Message from consultant respiratory paediatrician at cork university hospital . I hope you all stay safe during this difficult time . The children will get through this no problem . Paediatric hospitals are empty in Italy at present after 3 weeks of school closure as the usual viruses stopped circulating . Remember with corona children are vectors not victims . In most epidemics young children are the transmitters . Therefore for school closure to be effective it’s really important that the kids aren’t mixing with other kids while out of school . They will give it to each other silently pass it on to our loved ones. What we do now will contribute to how this develops in cork . Avoid situations that the children will interact . If the community respond to this it will shut it down more than anything we do in hospital . From my experiences in the hospital this last week I would say that corona virus is closer to all of us than we realise and the degrees of separation for all of us is getting narrower . I’m not that good at social media but if this could be shared as widely as possible with parents in cork it will help. This messsge needs to go viral to stop the virus .

Useful info

I have teenagers that grow like crazy, what do we do if dc grow out of their shoes when in lockdown. will shoe shops open?

NeurotrashWarrior · 15/03/2020 09:02

Murray, I grew up near Eyam too!

Random18 · 15/03/2020 09:03
