2020 will change things. I think the effect on the US possibly will be the most pronounced and obvious.

Random18 · 15/03/2020 09:05

I really don't know what our kids have done to deserve this.

Lets lock up the kids so the over 70's can go about their business as pleased.

Rosainryehead · 15/03/2020 09:08

When is the next cobra meeting? I cant find anything to say there is one today.

nellodee · 15/03/2020 09:09

Thank you Ofwarren. Stay safe and take care of yourself and yours Flowers

German newspaper Welt am Sonntag has reported that US president Donald Trump has sought exclusive rights to a vaccine for the coronavirus which is being developed by a German-based company, CureVac.

The report, which quoted unnamed sources, said Trump had offered large sums of money to German scientists working on the vaccine.

I have teenagers that grow like crazy, what do we do if dc grow out of their shoes when in lockdown. will shoe shops open?

At this point I look like a crazy pepper as I did actually consider this for 5 year DS in early Feb.

I did buy him a pair of trainers a size bigger.
Already had trousers bigger and all his tshirts are big anyway.

Harder for bigger kids though.

But then if you can't go outside you don't need shoes anyway. I'm sure they can turn up to school without them (you can tell how much the male domininated cabinet look after their own kids needs can't you?)

middleager · 15/03/2020 09:12

911 mentioned upthread.
I've been thinking alot this week how my nan must have felt going into an Anderson shelter with a one year old. Or how it felt to hear her sister in law had died in the Blitz.

Now watching 'Blitz Street' on YouTube and in a strange way it is giving me some perspectve.

WTAF? Shock Exclusive rights?!

BeijingBikini · 15/03/2020 09:16

Apparently Austria have banned gathering of >5 people

And banning loads of people flying in unless they quarantine for 2 weeks

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has told Sky News the Government will set out emergency powers amid the COVID-19 outbreak on Tuesday and publish the bill on Thursday adding it has been a "cross-party" approach

ofwarren please take a break and switch off. This is going to sound incredibly selfish though but please don’t stay away too long, your contributions are essential for a lot of people here. Have a good day!

fedup21 · 15/03/2020 09:23

Interesting, @ofwarren

Though, why on Earth the delay?

We will be keeping people in their 70s at home...but not for a few weeks.

We might close schools,...but not yet.

We might ask whole families to isolate themselves,...but not yet.

They are having an emergency meeting-on TUESDAY...to publish the bill on Thursday...presumably to start the next Monday..?!

Or in three weeks time!?

We certainly are at the DELAY phase but it’s not the bloody virus that’s the thing being delayed.

RedToothBrush · 15/03/2020 09:25

adding it has been a "cross-party" approach

The opposition currently hold no actual power.

Influence with the public yes. Influence with government no.

We are looking at measures which will undermine civil liberties and disruption democratic process for 2 years.

That might well be necessary but again in reality the opposition have no real power or influence over this.

It's just a way to sell this to the public and to try to get opposition to share blame if government fuck up policy.

I just wish they'd take ownership of leadership and management of this crisis tbh.

Youngatheart00 · 15/03/2020 09:26

I’ve said it before, we just look so bloody lethargic. If measures are necessary, do it NOW! Don’t wait for another 5 days of exponential spread.

Toomanyapplesinthefruitbowl · 15/03/2020 09:27

That sky news interview is so at odds with the telegraph articleConfused

Loppy10 · 15/03/2020 09:27

The Sunday Times article today makes sobering reading for the government apologists on here who were insisting our special British scientists know better than every other world leading expert across the globe:

Coronavirus death toll leaps — and forces Boris Johnson to act

Boris Johnson ordered fresh action against the coronavirus last night amid fears that *the pandemic is spreading faster than anticipated."

Johnson will chair a meeting today that is expected to impose the new rules this week — two weeks earlier than his scientists had expected last week.

As the death toll in Britain hit 21 yesterday, after doubling in four hours, the prime minister ordered the government to accelerate plans to make the elderly and vulnerable stay at home possibly for several months and force whole families to self-isolate where one member has symptoms.

The prime minister acted after experts warned him that the virus was spreading more quickly than their models had predicted, with at least 1,140 people having now tested positive in the UK.

Leaked documents showed that the police are drawing up plans to investigate only crimes involving loss of life.

Army chiefs are planning to deploy thousands of military police on the streets in the event of civil unrest and to use the armed forces to guard overcrowded prisons and erect field hospitals.

Such is the pressure on the NHS that in a change to national guidance, medics who have had close contact with infected patients are now being told to keep working unless they get symptoms.

RedToothBrush · 15/03/2020 09:30

Though, why on Earth the delay?

Planning discussion:

"Oh no we've not got public support for The Plan"

"Shit we need to do something"

"No correction. We need to look like we are doing something. Keep to the original plan. Just spin it"

"Oh so you mean, make an announcement about an announcement?"

"Yes of course. Cos that's being seen to do something without actually doing it"

"Ah gotcha"

Prime example of its not what a government says its what they do then it seems.

They are trying to manage public pressure.

I hope that scientists and teachers and parents turn up the volume then.

Piggywaspushed · 15/03/2020 09:36

Interview with Nadine Dorries today who now seems somewhat recovered and reports her mum is fine. Interesting reading but typical tone deaf note at the end when she say ' keep applying hand sanitiser constantly'

If anyone knows where to get it , Nadine, do let us all know...

My DS says no soap in his school toilets, and the taps don't work. He's a clean boy but has avoided his school toilets since year 9 (he is in year 11!)

PawFives · 15/03/2020 09:39

@piggy - makes you wonder when they last went to the shops, there’s nothing there!

Piggywaspushed · 15/03/2020 09:41

Well, obviously she's been ill, but I imagine she has watched the news.

That said, there are a lot of people on MN who think schools have hand sanitiser everywhere.

middleager · 15/03/2020 09:48

I'm glad Nadine and her mother are on the mend, but am concerned that reminders about using sanitiser and 'quick' recoveries may minimise the seriousness of this virus for.

Nadine got a test, they were ill when hospitals weren't overwhemed and presumably have sanitiser!

Not everybody will be in that position.

CharlieTangoBanana · 15/03/2020 09:48

Matt Hancock on the Andrew Marr show now

fedup21 · 15/03/2020 09:51

It must be very reassuring for Nadine and her mum to have had tests and know they had it but are now clear

Shame that feeling of reassurance won’t happen for the rest of us!

DrBlackbird · 15/03/2020 09:51

Poisoning I'm completely with you. There were many possible graded steps this government could have chosen to take and didn't. Governments can choose to consult widely with a variety of expert views (such as WHO) but this one clearly prefered their own echo chamber. Convenient.

Mathematical models are only as good as the available data on which to base them. Not to mention that the humans creating the formulas are frequently wrong. This whole approach smacks of Cummings and his evangelical belief in modelling, AI etc.

mrshoho · 15/03/2020 09:53

Are we expecting a government announcement today then? I hope they will change their original plan of sit and do nothing.

That part about the police plan to only investigate crimes where there has been a loss of life. Blimey you would think they would have said apart from violent crimes at least. There are still stabbings and violent burglaries going on and what deterrent will there be if this happens. Can only hope the army if they are used will deal with it. Funny how our terrorist threat level hardly gets a mention now.
