@usernotfound0000 thanks

Eeyoresstickhouse · 13/03/2020 12:27

BigChoc It is a real real worry. I have just messaged my husband saying he needs to speak about working from home. He is in a student facing role (not teaching) and is on a high dose of ramipril.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/03/2020 12:27

Well, all of us will be avoiding the GP, as advised, for what we think are minor ailments or worries,
probably for several month

  • some of those will turn out to be serious things that should have been tackled asap
BigChocFrenzy · 13/03/2020 12:29

DO NOT stop taking essential medicines unless advised to by your dr

^ Absolutely

The risk to health is likely to be far higher than CV if you just stop meds on your own

HasaDigaEebowai · 13/03/2020 12:31

So they can't actually go and get tested until they are terribly ill? Is that right???

The advice published today indicated they should call 111 if their symptoms worsen or have persisted beyond the 7 days

Loppy10 · 13/03/2020 12:32

It's all kicking off in the Tory party. Conservative MP Andrew Bridgen has a pop at Nadine Dorries for attending functions and sitting next to him while symptomatic. He now has to enter self-isolation. His wife is slating Nadine Dorries on twitter, and complaining about the inadequate help and support from the government - if even a ruling party MP and his wife are feeling left to fend for themselves, what hope is there for the rest of us?

I think I’m understanding the govt approach now, and I’m not sure if I’m just buying their potential bull about it, but I see where they’re coming from with their argument (although not saying it’s right).

What I think their argument means though is that things are going to be worse for us now in the next few months than any other country so far has seen. Because we’re letting more people catch it to allow it to infiltrate society to build up the herd immunity. At some point we’ll get the strict measures, but leaving it later than other countries and allowing for more of the population to get it now means our hospitals surely will be pushed further than Wuhan (who built I believe 14 temporary hospitals and flew in loads of doctors from other areas of China) and Italy (which has a far higher ICU bed per population figure than us). Things are going to be utterly awful this summer for us and they know this. Not just awful like everyone else, but worse. But I think they are allowing this on the assumption that when other countries get another peak next autumn and winter when it’s flu season, we will hopefully fair much better as so many will have had it. It’s risky to me as potentially in that time there may be treatment options to help those on the second wave which will be too late to benefit some here and it assumes you can’t catch it more than once which I don’t think we know for sure.

I just can’t help but think about how bad hospitals in Italy are right now and how much worse they inevitably will be here with this tactic we are following. I can but hope it pays off and more lives aren’t lost by following this ‘science’ .

I'm reading these threads but behind today - anyone have a link to thread 24?

@Reastie There is a big worry that herd immunity with Covid-19 is a fallacy. We don't know for sure that once you've had this virus you become immune to it.

SubjectMatterExpert · 13/03/2020 12:36

I imagine government still has access to tests/treatment/medication for any illnesses via private health care?

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 13/03/2020 12:37

God, I wish France would close their borders. DD1 working out there in a ski resort. We are supposed to be going in 10 days time to visit, DH is immunosuppressed after chemo. Closing their borders would mean we don't have to make a difficult decision. Purely selfish of me, I know.

Reastie · 13/03/2020 12:39

@NellyGrace so this country really is just a big experiment then. It’s just one big gamble.

HasaDigaEebowai · 13/03/2020 12:40

Is that a difficult decision yolo Visit v jeopardising the health of a vulnerable person? It isn't difficult at all IMO although I appreciate your DD might be disappointed.

daffodilsandblossom · 13/03/2020 12:40

GPs and carehomes closing is good as it is protecting the most vulnerable - those who are unwell.

Schools are open as healthy children are mildly affected by it.

ruddydogg · 13/03/2020 12:40

Yesterday I took my son to the doctor for an ear infection. Appointment was made two weeks ago.

Not only did my you daughter tell the doctor she should stop touching her face (doctor kept rubbing her nose and demonstrating to my son how to try to unblock his ears 🙄) but doctors response to my daughter was don’t worry the virus isn’t that bad anyway. Both children just sat stared at her and then looked at me.

Flies in the face of everything School and I have been trying to install in them.

Got home and asked children to wash their hands and both replied but the doctor says the virus isn’t that bad anyway!

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 13/03/2020 12:42

Hasa no, it's not really, it's just ... hard, we've had a shit couple of years, but we'll have to cancel I think. I wish DD1 was here rather than waiting to see what happens in a French ski resort - she says French govt having a big mtg today about ski resorts so we'll see.

I was reasonably relaxed, although we have accepted that we won't be travelling to Aus in April to see DS. Made sure our 'oldies' are prepared and as safe as possible.

Not even worried about the high blood pressure concern, as mine is under control, using Ramipril. Now learn that this could place me in the 'at risk' category, and feel seriously upset about it. Selfish I know! Feel like going to live on a desert island for a while - as I'm sure many of us do. Quite surprised at my emotional reaction.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/03/2020 12:43

Reastie I think we mostly understand their approach

The concern is that this may not lower and stretch out the peak period for the hospitalisation,
as in that graph we keep seeing, with the longer and lower peak as the aim

Q: Does having asthma in a six-year-old increase chances of #coronavirus symptoms being more severe?

A: Yes, having asthma does "increase the risk of severity", regardless of whether you're a child or an adult.

I'm seeing a shift in opinion among the naysayers and uninterested people on my social media. I think people are starting to get worried now. Anyone else seeing this?

This time last week my husband was so dismissive, laughing at “how mad everyone has gone” and banging on about how it’s “the same as the flu” and generally insinuating that everyone was being ridiculous. He was also incredulous that I said I didn’t want to go on our Easter holiday abroad.

Last night he came home from work and put Sky News 24 on and sat watching the Coronavirus updates and stats etc and said how horrifying it was. This morning he has asked if we should just cancel our holiday.

When my DH starts panicking then I really know there’s something to worry about!!
