Saturday night we are going to a concert in Newcastle (well we were meant to be )
We've paid for train (over £100 each ) and hotel (£150 split) and £80 ticket each.
Tonight she text saying she isn't coming as she is scared incase she catches coronavirus.
So I have nobody to go with and we only reserved hotel so I will have to pay £150 for that.
Aibu to be Annoyed?
I told her to get a grip, and was she planning on not going out till after this has gone.

YABU OP, your friend has valid concerns. She should pay for her half of the hotel though.

The above is a good read if you are in the 'it's only flu' camp....

Spottyspottyladybird · 12/03/2020 06:14

I went to see the script earlier this week so I agree with you I'd still go. The cases are low currently. I do think she needs to pay half the cost though... it's not fair to leave you out of pocket.

Mlou32 · 12/03/2020 06:27

I just don't think we can stop living because of a virus Well "stop living" is exactly what people will be doing if we don't start taking it seriously!

You say that you don't see that they are going to be cancelling large events, well they have already done so here in Ireland, they've cancelled St Patrick's day parades nationwide and cancelled rugby 6 nations matches etc.

We need to start being less naive about this. There is no reason to panic but there is reason to be taking this seriously and seeing it as a grave concern. We need to be taking a lot more action in the UK; our government don't seek to be capable of or willing to put in robust enough steps to contain it therefore it's up to us individuals to do whatever we can to stop its spread.

TheAirbender · 12/03/2020 06:29

Is this really how people in the UK are thinking, still?

You are three weeks behind Italy, without major precautions being taken TODAY.

I truly believe it’s up to is all to exceed government advice.

HoneyBee03 · 12/03/2020 06:31

I'd be really annoyed about this, she definitely needs to pay half the hotel costs. I understand you being annoyed though - I live quite rurally and hardly anyone is talking about it, life really is carrying on as usual, parties and events being organised, jokes flying around at work, etc. I'm following it all quite closely so can see what's happening, but can also understand this point of view as I don't know many people IRL who are concerned.

Sweetener12 · 12/03/2020 06:35

YANBU because this coronavirus hysteria is just getting ridiculous. How many people have died because of it? 4.6K. And how many have recovered? 68K! This disease is not that awful and crucial as media want you to believe. Honestly, AIDS and HIV are much bigger problems but people wouldn't speak about it openly.
You have every right to be annoyed and your friend definitely should pay for her tickets anyway.

Mlou32 · 12/03/2020 06:38

@neckpainchairsearch a Trumpian grasp of the reality? He's actually begun to put sensible measures in place like banning European flights from entering the US, with more bans to follow. Seems like he has more sense than our government sadly!

DominicCummingsForehead · 12/03/2020 06:38

This can't be a genuine post.

Fannia · 12/03/2020 06:41

Governments around the world wouldn't be considering lockdown measures just because of hysterical media reports. It costs the economy billions to do these things.

lilgreen · 12/03/2020 06:42

I understand her not wanting to go and it might well be banned as of today anyway as gov might ban large gatherings. But, she needs to pay her costs!!!

SunshineOverStress · 12/03/2020 06:42

I would be annoyed too!

lilgreen · 12/03/2020 06:44

Are you not following the news??? I’m cancelling a trip to Denmark.

AlternativePerspective · 12/03/2020 06:45

We do need to live our lives still. And we don’t actually know that we are three weeks behind Italy, that kind of talk is scaremongering, Italy’s number of cases rose sharply as soon as the first one was diagnosed, ours has still gone up but not to that extent.

Having said that, government is expected to move to delay phase after today’s Cobra meeting, so chances are the concert will be cancelled anyway.

As for the PP booked on to a cruise, as non-panicked as I am about this, there’s no way in hell I’d be going on a cruise. Imagine being stuck on a ship for two weeks 😱

That couple who they had on one of the news programmes the other day were talking about how their quarantine on a cruise ship involved being stuck in their cabin for two weeks, with meals being delivered to and collected from outside the door. When the man tried to go outside he was stopped and told if he was caught again he would be arrested.

I do think that some people think that two weeks isolation on a cruise ship would mean a nice extended holiday, but I think not.

Luckystar777 · 12/03/2020 06:45

ffs.

Blimeyoreilly2020 · 12/03/2020 06:49

I’d like to think you’re a GF, but sadly you’re probably just an example of a someone completely unable to grasp the facts, figures and potential consequences in real terms....yes, your friend should not leave you out of pocket but no, she is nbu. And stop assuming the govt have your personal best interests at heart!

Clangus00 · 12/03/2020 06:51

COBRA meeting again this morning.
I’m fully expecting all sporting events, concerts etc to be cancelled.
I don’t really blame your friend.

Vanhi · 12/03/2020 06:51

I just think if it was a danger to people then it would have been cancelled.

You have a very naive trust in a government that is solely interested in power and money, and absolutely nothing else.

I would ask your friend to pay her half of the hotel costs. You can go and not be out of pocket. If she pays using a credit card she may be able to get her share back.

YOu can think of it as like the flu only if you add the caveat 'with absolutely no-one having any existing immunity to it'. Given how many flu kills each year, imagine what it would do in a new population.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 12/03/2020 06:56

The cases known are those who have returned from contaminated areas

Hmm The case in Sunderland, the woman had not travelled nor had been in contact with anyone who had travelled, her son and friends and family have no idea how she became infected.

There is LOADS of reported cases like this, however for some reason is largely being ignored by the "its only flu" idiots

MzHz · 12/03/2020 06:57

Your friend is wise to cancel, but she has to lay you for the tickets and the room

MzHz · 12/03/2020 06:58

*Pay.

AuldAlliance · 12/03/2020 07:01

Italy's cases did not rise sharply as soon as the first one was diagnosed:
www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/italy/

Re. Trump and his travel ban to keep out the "foreign virus."
It only covers Schengen countries, neatly excluding those where he has golf courses, as well as Russia, and ignoring the fact that people could fly from a Schengen country to Canada and pop over the border, or to the UK and onwards to the EU. Ireland is non-Schengen and has 43 cases...

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 12/03/2020 07:03

She needs to pay you her half so that her not going doesn't leave you out of pocket. Otherwise, she's not the one being unreasonable.

She needs to pay half.

I’d be doing the same as her though- we’re doing away this weekend and I think we’re about to cancel, too.
