I’ve followed all advice to not buy more than I need ,baring in mind people on lower incomes who can’t afford to stock up .
So I’ve just been to Tesco to do my weekly shop ,and not a single toilet roll to be had ...
NOT EVEN ONE ,on any shelves.
I spoke to the manager and asked why stocks were not limited to one pack per person ,he didn’t care in the slightest, told me the delivery gets in at 4 am
Is that now what I have to do ,get up at 4 am just to get loo roll.

OP posts:
Purplewhitelie · 11/03/2020 17:57

A family we know who has 4 kids always buys it online as bulk and much much cheaper. Surely most people have the internet as they are on mumsnet? Confused

chocolateisavegetable · 11/03/2020 17:57

Did you know that it's scientifically proven that stockpiling chocolate is impossible? I did extensive testing to be sure ...

willowpatterns · 11/03/2020 17:58

I'm just popping down the road to my local Morrisons for some lettuce and bran flakes.

Will report back on the pasta/bogroll situation on my return Grin

GrumpyHoonMain · 11/03/2020 17:58

Expect loads of CFs trying to return loo roll after things calm down

PepePig · 11/03/2020 17:59

People are ridiculous, tbh. OP, try garages/petrol stations for things that the supermarkets are out of.

I did my food shop on Monday. Couldn't get it until today because no delivery/c&c spots yesterday. I couldn't get one roll of kitchen roll...

It's stupid. People need to wise up. My mum was shopping yesterday and saw a lady clear an entire shelf of bleach into her trolley. Honestly...

And for those saying "you should have stocked up". You are aware that if we all did what you did, before you, then you'd be sitting with fuck all supplies? Fuck clean off.

Funguy · 11/03/2020 17:59

People are dickheads. It drives me nuts how selfish they are.

SpeckledyHen · 11/03/2020 18:01

Is seems from my limited observation that the shelves are stocked in the morning and the early shoppers reap the benefits.

Purplewhitelie · 11/03/2020 18:02

You can buy online ShockConfused

MauriceandAlec · 11/03/2020 18:02

Panic buyers are not the same as preppers.

Irial · 11/03/2020 18:04

I've just been to the local supermarket, no anti bac soap - so annoying, I have nearly run out, and I only wanted 1 flaming bottle

Percypopper · 11/03/2020 18:04

Using water to clean is way healthier anyway OP so don’t worry about the loo roll

Fifthtimelucky · 11/03/2020 18:05

Last week when I did my normal weekly shop the only things my local Tesco was out of was hand sanitiser and liquid soap. Plenty of loo roll, pasta and rice. Didn't need any so didn't buy any.

This week there was still no hand sanitiser and liquid soap, and there was also no normal rice in big packets, hardly any pasta and not a single loo roll. Fortunately for me, I'm usually pretty well stocked up with the basics and will probably be able to manage without buying any more until
Easter but I know not everyone is as lucky.

Finfintytint · 11/03/2020 18:06

PepePig, that doesn’t make sense. If everyone prepared gradually months ago then there would be plenty enough for everyone. The point with prepping is that you don’t panic buy and you gradually build up reserves over a long period of time.

Waspnest · 11/03/2020 18:06

So how many rolls did they buy OP?

GrumpyHoonMain · 11/03/2020 18:06

@mauriceandalec - it’s the same thing. Preppers just got lucky that covid-19 reared it’s head during their panic buying.

Ninkanink · 11/03/2020 18:07

We bought a nine roll pack of loo roll last week and another one this week. Plus enough food to last four of us for at least two weeks if necessary (my grown up daughters live nearby and we’ll look to feed them too in the case of an eventual emergency). Next week we’ll do another top-up shop to have enough supplies for about three weeks of isolation/illness. That’s not greed, nor stupidity, nor panic. It’s quite sensible. And the supermarkets where I live have by and large remained fine - asda was out of loo roll the other day, but Aldi had plenty. I’ve not seen any hand sanitiser but I’m not bothered about that. Asda had hardly any pasta at all today, but LIDL had plenty.

Finfintytint · 11/03/2020 18:09

Grumpy, preppers never panic buy. That’s the whole point.

Justaboy · 11/03/2020 18:09

Seen this?, man here manages a bog roll factory they start as rather huge rolls weighing well over a ton!, sez he sold 63 million of them last week!

Sarcelle · 11/03/2020 18:10

There are all sorts of reasons why loo roll goes fast.

It is a bulky item so when the shelves empty out it leaves a lot of blank shelves. Psychologically people think, I had better get some and it starts a chain reaction.

In some case COVID does cause diarrhoea, but that is not the reason for the sell out.

But crucially a week ago we were all told we might have to self isolate, and get provisions in for a 2 week period or longer. So everybody tried to do that at the same time. Even PHE (Public Health England) advised doing that.

My area had a lot of panic buying but now it is back to normal.

Some people ate profiteering, buying up amounts in case they can sell on ebay or amazon. Like they did with hand gel.

I wouldn't rule out some unscrupulous corner shops selling stuff at astronomical prices in the next few months. If you have no choice but to buy from them, avoid them after this is all over, that will be their payback.

speakout · 11/03/2020 18:11

Stockpilers are differnt.
Living in rural Scotland I never let items run low. We are subject to bad weather, power cuts, so makes sense to keep things in store.
At all times I have enough food to feed my family for weeks, corona has not changed that.

PIPinghell · 11/03/2020 18:12

I seem to be unable to stockpile wine it keeps disappearing

I'm having the same issue, someone is thieving my wine supply!

codenameduchess · 11/03/2020 18:12

I'm going to do a 'big shop' this week, partly because we haven't for ages and partly so we have a bit extra in case we do end up quarantined if ill. Last time I was in the supermarket though there was no loo roll, hand soap/sanitiser, bleach, paracetamol or dry pasta! The idiot panic buyers are ridiculous, how will be spread be controlled if half the country can't effectively wash their hands?!

I have a pact with a friend that if either of us (and our partners/dc) end up ill or quarantined the other will drop food parcels so we'll survive.

AParallelUniverse · 11/03/2020 18:13

Panic buying rather than stockpiling I think. I've stockpiled for the last year. So haven't needed to go and panic buy. So I'm not competing for the bog rolls 🤷‍♂️

chomalungma · 11/03/2020 18:15

No pasta at all in our local Morrisons
Local Tesco is limiting amount people can buy.

When will we get ration cards?

SuperMumTum · 11/03/2020 18:15

I have a small "stockpile" at home of basics; bog roll, tins of beans, rice etc. I'm a single parent and I can't always get to the shops and sometimes I'm a bit short before pay day so it is entirely sensible for me to keep my cupboards well stocked with non-perishables and an extra 9 pack of loo roll under the stairs. Not selfish, sensible.
