I’ve followed all advice to not buy more than I need ,baring in mind people on lower incomes who can’t afford to stock up .
So I’ve just been to Tesco to do my weekly shop ,and not a single toilet roll to be had ...
NOT EVEN ONE ,on any shelves.
I spoke to the manager and asked why stocks were not limited to one pack per person ,he didn’t care in the slightest, told me the delivery gets in at 4 am
Is that now what I have to do ,get up at 4 am just to get loo roll.

I would imagine a lot of people have bought extra in response to not being able to get it easily.

I would imagine a lot of people have bought extra in response to people talking about needing to stockpile loo roll.

Ylvamoon · 11/03/2020 17:20

Can anyone enlighten me as to why loo roll? Because it can't be because if one sneezes 100 people shit themselves!

missyelloww · 11/03/2020 17:22

Absolutely selfish. 11mo DD had a very high temperature on the weekend - couldn't get her to see a GP as its a symptom of CV so told to stay away. It took me the entire weekend to find shops that had calpol and nurofen as we had ran out earlier in the week and was waiting until the weekly shop to buy more. She's fine now so it's not the end of the world - but just meant that she had to suffer longer than necessary. Also makes me wonder about other situations where people won't be able to access things that they need because of people panic buying!

Weregoingonanadventure · 11/03/2020 17:25

I started using cheeky wipes about a year ago and loads of people thought it was mad and disgusting. Now they cant find any toilet roll and I'm feeling quite smug about it after all their bitching!

UserV · 11/03/2020 17:26

@Springsnake

My supermarkets are fine too.

I am genuinely seeing none of it where I am (Worcestershire.)

Also, my relatives and pals in Shropshire, North Staffs, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, and North Wales are OK too.

Baffled. I am just not seeing it in real life. And no-one I know is.

I know it's happening SOME where because I am seeing it on TV, but I just haven't seen it in person.

iMoan7 · 11/03/2020 17:27

I saw a woman load up her trolley with five or six tins of formula today. I mean I can understand her concern but it’s very selfish and that really is the sort of thing they should be limiting

AnneJeanne · 11/03/2020 17:27

I bought extra because there will come a point when I won’t leave my house due to my age and diabetes. I’m just being prepared.

BarbaraofSeville · 11/03/2020 17:30

We get ours from Costco and are down to the last few rolls so I went this afternoon and they had completely run out too, just a big space where all the big packs used to live.

Butterwhy · 11/03/2020 17:30

There has been none around here for the past week or so, but deliveries today have had some on, so hopefully loo rolls are starting to roll back off of the production lines in higher numbers to cope with demand. I am always intrigued by the assumption shops can just always get more in though, I guess it shows how cocooned we are in our way of thinking and expectations.

cologne4711 · 11/03/2020 17:30

You could also try Robert Dyas if there's one locally.

Wallowinginfilth · 11/03/2020 17:31

My plan is to get a relative to do a shop and leave it on the doorstep if we get it, and vice versa if they get it.

CalendulaAndRoses · 11/03/2020 17:31

I was in lidl yesterday thinking maybe I should get some extra loo roll. There were two packs of nine rolls left and a man stood next to me. I thought about taking both but felt that would be pretty mean assuming he also wanted some so took one pack and asked him if he wanted me to pass him the other. He asked what price it was and when I told him said no he'd stick with the 4 pack. So we both left the last pack of 9 there for someone else. I was pleased I came across him. He stopped me in my about to panic buy tracks and helped me get some perspective again (hope we don't both regret it!!!)

HasaDigaEebowai · 11/03/2020 17:32

None at all in our city centre lidl this morning and people were complaining.

However, as others have said, it isn't those who stockpiled that caused any shortage. In fact those people won't have needed to buy any. Its those who don't keep any sort of pantry or buffer who dash out and panic buy in bulk that cause the issue.

AutumnRose1 · 11/03/2020 17:33

OP I’ve just toured round trying to get some

I finally found some an Indian grocery shop, it looks like it’s food only and there’s all fresh fruit and veg in front, but when I went in, they had loo roll. I tried Aldi, Sainsbury, Waitrose and Tesco before. I finished work at 4pm and I’ve basically been shopping for loo roll for the last hour.

Purplewhitelie · 11/03/2020 17:33

I don’t understand this. You can buy it on amazon?!

Wallowinginfilth · 11/03/2020 17:33

A couple of places out of loo roll here, but other places are fine. Aldi has them where we are

HasaDigaEebowai · 11/03/2020 17:34

Also, my relatives and pals in Shropshire, North Staffs, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, and North Wales are OK too.

Hmm, well I'm in one of those areas and the shelves were empty of loo roll in Lidl

YgritteSnow · 11/03/2020 17:34

We keep being told that the U.K. will be where Italy is within a fortnight, that the country will be in quarantine etc. What happens if that happens? I'll tell you, a mad dash to the shops and queues all along the road the way it is in Italy right now. Everyone in close proximity to one another, which supposedly is the last thing we should be doing. Those who didn't stock up because it was "selfish" will wish they had no doubt. I won't be in the queue adding to the chaos and neither will all the others who stocked up.

If the worst happens there'll be less desperate people out there - a good thing.

If the best happens - then all will carry on as usual and food banks will get big top ups and/or demand will still be lower and shelves bursting because people will be using up their stocks. - a good thing.

It's been a bit inconvenient for a week.

Next week there will be huge amounts of toilet paper/pasta/rice/flour because supply will be increased to meet demand. You don't think the supermarkets won't take full advantage of this? Of course they will. It's not selfishness to stock up reasonably, if anything it's responsible. If I was forced to self isolate tomorrow I could without a mad forced dash to the supermarket for essentials beforehand. I think if you can you should and if the shit hits the fan it will ensure there's less people competing for resources in those first few days of panic.

HoffiCoffi13 · 11/03/2020 17:36

Just been in my local supermarket and the woman behind me loaded onto her conveyor belt...

54 toilet rolls
5 bags of fusilli
5 bags of rice
10 tins of tomatoes
10 tins of beans
4 packs of antibac wipes

iMoan7 · 11/03/2020 17:36

How long are you stockpiling for though? I mean I have about 2 weeks worth of food and some flu meds and paracetamol.

I seem to be unable to stockpile wine it keeps disappearing 😕

Chucklecheeks01 · 11/03/2020 17:37

I had a brain hemorrhage 6 weeks ago and need paracetamol (and morphine) daily. Cant get it local to me anywhere. Had to get my GP to prescribe me some so I could buy it from a chemist who wouldnt sell it to me without a prescription 🤷‍♀️

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 11/03/2020 17:37

Yes I hate all stockpilers too! Sainsbury’s ransacked - staff said they are limiting to 5 packs pp!!!
Wtf
Thank god for independent corner shops- got mine there!

Abetes · 11/03/2020 17:37

I’m normally super disorganised and only buy stuff when I’ve almost run out rather than keeping an extra packet of loo rolls/pasta/rice whatever in the cupboard. My dd is immunosuppressed so we might well have to self isolate so I have been out and bought enough store cupboard stuff and basics to last three weeks or we wouldn’t have enough food and toiletries in the house. That might be stock piling but the alternative would be not self isolating and spreading the disease as the delivery companies seem to be out of slots for the next five or six days.

HisBetterHalf · 11/03/2020 17:40

all due to greedy selfish people.

HasaDigaEebowai · 11/03/2020 17:41

To be fair nobody has said don't prepare for potential isolation. They've said no need to panic buy which is completely different. It's very sensible to have bought what you need if you and your family are housebound for three weeks. For most people that would be quite a lot of food and other items.

I suspect once they announce that anyone with cold/flu symptoms must stay at home self isolating they will at the same time encourage everyone to ensure they are prepared for that eventuality. That means, food, toiletries, loo roll, cleaning products etc.
