I’ve followed all advice to not buy more than I need ,baring in mind people on lower incomes who can’t afford to stock up .
So I’ve just been to Tesco to do my weekly shop ,and not a single toilet roll to be had ...
NOT EVEN ONE ,on any shelves.
I spoke to the manager and asked why stocks were not limited to one pack per person ,he didn’t care in the slightest, told me the delivery gets in at 4 am
Is that now what I have to do ,get up at 4 am just to get loo roll.

If everyone kept a small "stockpile" in, enough to last a couple of weeks, this would never ever happen.

exactly that

nicky2512 · 11/03/2020 18:53

I’m in Northern Ireland. No loo roll, pasta, flour etc in my local Asda this morning and v low on lots of other items. I don’t stockpile though I usually try never to use my last one of stuff if I can avoid it.
I genuinely am a bit worried now when I think about it as we obviously rely on our goods coming from the mainland.
Loo rolls probably the only thing I don’t need to worry about! My mum buys them every week whether she needs them or not so she is sharing out her stash!

Figgygal · 11/03/2020 18:55

Yup the problem isn’t the virus , it’s the people’s response to the virus

AJPTaylor · 11/03/2020 18:55

Is it even panic buying though.
I can't remember ever needing to lay in 2 weeks worth of supplies.
I went to make a start earlier in the week to create a "not to be touched" supply for our household of 4. So it may well look like panic buying but actually I am simply buying extra of everything that I can fit in the freezer and long life/tins and dried food. Have also got enough Ibruprofen and paracetamol to see 4 adults through a week of needing them.

unexpectedthird · 11/03/2020 18:55

I have toilet roll coming out my ears. 😭

Our Who Gives a Crap subscription was due this week but there was a problem processing it so I placed an order manually. Then the problem fixed itself and my subscription clicked in. I now have 96 double sized rolls of toilet paper to store.

We last received some in September and at this rate won't need any for at least a year.

Also, so far there seems to be no shortage of toilet paper locally. There's not much pasta around and it's hard to find paracetamol but everything else is in stock.

Our local Asda last night, no loo roll, pasta or flour. Plenty of booze. Not sure what that says about my area Smile

Sparklingbrook · 11/03/2020 19:00

Presumably at some point everyone will have their two week's worth of pasta/loo roll/tinned tomatoes/pot noodles/paracetamol safely stored and stock levels will return to normal in the shops?

bmbonanza · 11/03/2020 19:02

Loads in our morrisons this morning - I didnt buy any but it almost seemed a shame not to.....

brighterdays2 · 11/03/2020 19:02

@unexpectedthird Ssssh, don't tell everyone about Who Gives A Crap, my order's meant to be shipped next week and I don't want that going out of stock! Grin

oxoxoxoxo · 11/03/2020 19:03

Haven't RTFT so apologies if I'm repeating stuff. Although I think we shouldn't stockpile on principle, I admit to getting a few more bits and bobs for this very reason - everyone else is panic buying and I don't want to be caught out.

But I heard on radio 5 live a couple of days ago the presenter talking to a chap who worked in supermarket supply chain management. He said that it was actually not a bad thing, if those with enough money and room to stockpile big stuff like loo rolls, then the supermarkets will have time to re-stock so that poorer people and those with less space can buy as they need, once the outbreak worsens. The general view seems to be that we have about a month for things to really peak.

Pluckedpencil · 11/03/2020 19:04

Come to Italy, it's plentiful here!!

ViciousJackdaw · 11/03/2020 19:04

The shops in my area are fine bar the usual handgel/antibac/painkiller shortage. I'm in a deprived area though, many people here live fortnight to fortnight so couldn't afford 48 bog rolls in one shop. Like a PP, I've got 18 spare rolls because of the Tesco offer.

Sharpandshineyteeth · 11/03/2020 19:06

Try aldi. They don’t do delivery’s. I’ve found them to have normal amounts of everything

Dillydallyingthrough · 11/03/2020 19:06

I have a stockpile as like many others me and my household have a number of health conditions. But I did no panic buying I've been buying around 5 things extra a week for months. Also like PP there are no shortages near me, 4 supermarkets within a 15 min drive all have lots of toilet roll, pasta, tins etc. Its really odd I keep hearing and seeing stuff about shortages but there is none near me or my parents/siblings (200 miles away) - I wonder what causes certain areas to panic buy?

Porcupineinwaiting · 11/03/2020 19:08

Seriously Figgygal? I think you will find that most of the deaths are due to the virus, not the shortage of loo roll.

lazylinguist · 11/03/2020 19:12

I think the accusations of selfishness and greediness are a bit excessive tbh. If lots and lots of people all buy just one extra pack of pasta or toilet rolls, that's hardly greedy, and yet collectively it will deplete the shelves.

unexpectedthird · 11/03/2020 19:14

@brighterdays2 don't worry, if yours doesn't turn up I'll post you my spare one! 🤣

madcatladyforever · 11/03/2020 19:14

Order them on amazon like I do. I can't be bothered to go out hunting.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 11/03/2020 19:16

I agree- its disgusting. Selfish entitled idiots.

Lunafortheloveogod · 11/03/2020 19:16

Same here, fortunately got some in a small local shop.. at a premium but well I have an arse to wipe.

Tesco had no loo roll, kitchen roll (who’s improvised), soap, sanitiser, small bags of pasta n rice (could’ve got a massive 8kg sack) and beans.., what the fuck are these panic buyers eating! Is it the beans that’s making all the loo roll sell out? Grin

Millhouse7 · 11/03/2020 19:18

There's loads where I live. It's odd how certain areas seem to be effected.

katseyes7 · 11/03/2020 19:18

l work in a supermarket. l've been off on holiday for nearly 2 weeks. One of my colleagues has just texted me to say our store won't get their next delivery of toilet rolls for another two weeks. They're also limiting bleach, anti bac, bottled water and some milk products.
Apparently some customers have not been happy.

Bunnyfuller · 11/03/2020 19:22

Thread upon thread upon thread, mocking preppers, asking what the fuss is about, it’s ‘just flu’.

If you were too blind to see or at least entertain the possibility that disruption may be caused, please don’t bleat about panic buyers now.

If YOU need this stuff, you too are a panic buyer - you didn’t prep, slowly, over several weeks, one of 2 things at a time, and now you act shocked and horrified at how things are turning out.

Preppers prep to AVOID panic buying, and to AVOID being in the shit, not able to get things because of other last minute people, or having to pay through the nose for the limited items left, or go to 8 shops to try to get what you need.

No doubt the same people will be mocking when we crash out of the EU properly, with the no deal Boris is engineering while everyone is looking the other way. News flash: you might want to prep.
