I’ve followed all advice to not buy more than I need ,baring in mind people on lower incomes who can’t afford to stock up .
So I’ve just been to Tesco to do my weekly shop ,and not a single toilet roll to be had ...
NOT EVEN ONE ,on any shelves.
I spoke to the manager and asked why stocks were not limited to one pack per person ,he didn’t care in the slightest, told me the delivery gets in at 4 am
Is that now what I have to do ,get up at 4 am just to get loo roll.

Hose under the shower, wet cotton wool, tissues.
but no one wants to have to improvise unless they really have to!

And then what, you bleach the bath or shower after every use? That's environmentally friendly..

I am not a stock piller, I just shop normally but I do find people panicking or waiting until the last minute equally ridiculous. Everytime someone is distraught because the supermarket ran out of something means 50 people who rush to buy these items just in case.

English supermarkets ALWAYS run out of something anyway.

Dongdingdong · 11/03/2020 17:42

The problem with the stockpilers is that once they start, everybody else has to as well - because it’s impossible to shop as you usually would. Instead of buying little and often, you have to buy a load of toilet roll in bulk while you can just in case it runs out.

If everyone just carried on as normal then we would all be able to continue shopping as we usually do.

Skyejuly · 11/03/2020 17:42

The preppers buy steadily over a long period of time. I upped my levels when wuhan went into lockdown but I only ever buy 2 tons of Tom's, 2 extra soups etc never clearing shelves. If I wanted a few paracetamol packets I went to a few shops buying one in each. Same with loo roo. I now have a nice stock so my recent shops have just mainly been fresh fruit and veg and stuff I cant stock as I have no space left! So no I have not contributed, people that dont prep are the problem.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 11/03/2020 17:43

I just wee in the shower 😂
On a serious note, my local Asda had toilet roll last week. Lets see what its saying on Friday when i get paid.
I used to split a massive pack from Costco with a friend & keep them in the cupboard under the stairs.
There was no cheap painkillers in Asda or Home & Bargain. But the expensive ones were all still there. Again, will reassess on Friday.
I usually have a stock of ambient goods as i frequently run out of money but it rarely includes pasta as it has no nutritional value. Rice & various pulses better.
My local chinese supermarket was absolutely spotless and i stocked up there.
Asda was just bedlam.

Skyejuly · 11/03/2020 17:43

Local co ops etc have more than superm6

LynetteScavo · 11/03/2020 17:44

There was just one 4 pack of toilet rolls left in the shop this lunchtime...I don't think anyone wanted to be the person to take it.

KeepYourWigOn · 11/03/2020 17:44

I am genuinely seeing none of it where I am (Worcestershire.) yes I'm in Worcestershire too, and no problem getting supplies around here, but then we haven't had any confirmed cases yet. Things could change when and if that happens.

ScrambledSmegs · 11/03/2020 17:45

Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Waitrose - no loo roll at all. It's bloody annoying.

I did get some at M&S. This is not just any toilet paper...

ScrambledSmegs · 11/03/2020 17:46

We've got quite a few cases round here to be fair.

tallah · 11/03/2020 17:46

Bored of this

Springsnake · 11/03/2020 17:46

We are all good
Aldi to the rescue,
Our Aldi is tiny compared to the massive out of town Tesco .
Yet it manages to have fully stocked shelves ,

I am almost right in the center of Uk couldn’t be any further from the sea if I tried .
I'm not sure I get why it makes any difference that you're far from the sea. It's not a sea-borne virus AFAIK...

I upped my levels when wuhan went into lockdown but I only ever buy 2 tons of Tom's,
Wow, there are so many ways to interpret this ... GrinGrinGrin

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 11/03/2020 17:47

My colleagues in China were still allowed to go to the supermarkets -
People need to calm down!

Springsnake · 11/03/2020 17:47

I don’t know why I put about the sea either 😀😀😀

Surely you can do without loo roll for a week or two anyway?
No, there are 4 people in this house, 3 of whom are female, 2 are "people who menstruate, all of us give a crap daily.

Why does anyone think loo roll is their saviour in a crisis.
Hose under the shower, wet cotton wool, tissues.
So many ways to improvise

Hello, wet cotton wool and tissues are not designed for flushing.

Running water and flush toilets are one of the main things which mean we can live in cities without fear of (most) disease. Medieval London was a very smelly place by all accounts.

So, I was in Tesco yesterday and only intended to buy about 6 rolls. The smallest packs available contained 9 rolls. And there was a special incentive to buy 2 packs, almost a BOGOF. No prizes for guessing who bought 18 rolls of puppies.

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 11/03/2020 17:50

Plus loo roll is cheap, and not perishable. Even if people buy an excessive amount, they'll use it eventually.

Shops should put a reasonable limit though. You can hardly justify a van full for a normal household.

purplecorkheart · 11/03/2020 17:50

My local shop seems to have toilet paper at the moment. Antibacterial sprays etc they seem to only put on a few of each at a time. I guess to prevent one person stockpiling too much.

Pasta and par baked bread are low in stock and for some reason bread soda can not be got. They normally have loads.

123rd · 11/03/2020 17:51

Was also going to say Aldi have tonnes in stock where I am

DioneTheDiabolist · 11/03/2020 17:51

Our small local shops are well stocked, it's just the supermarkets that seem to have problems. I blame trolleys.Grin

Skyejuly · 11/03/2020 17:52

My typos are horrendous lately! My phone has a big crack across the screen and it sometimes think I am pushing buttons!

Purplewhitelie · 11/03/2020 17:52

You can buy it online. Plenty online, actually cheaper.

KittiesInsane · 11/03/2020 17:52

Alarmingly, Amazon are currently offering loo roll 'used and new':

saraclara · 11/03/2020 17:53

The large supermarkets near me are totally out of loo roll. The convenience stores nearby are fine. It seems the panic buyers don't think to go further than Tesco and Asda!

Springsnake · 11/03/2020 17:53

I’ve never been a fan of Aldi before ,but it’s definitely saved the day today .

BananaChocolateLump · 11/03/2020 17:56

I've got loads but it's only because I forgot to push back my who gives a crap subscription as I had 22 left and now I've added an extra 48. To be honest seeing how people have gone with it Im glad I didn't change it. My next delivery isn't till May and the order before that was bought in December so I think we will be fine
