I’ve followed all advice to not buy more than I need ,baring in mind people on lower incomes who can’t afford to stock up .
So I’ve just been to Tesco to do my weekly shop ,and not a single toilet roll to be had ...
NOT EVEN ONE ,on any shelves.
I spoke to the manager and asked why stocks were not limited to one pack per person ,he didn’t care in the slightest, told me the delivery gets in at 4 am
Is that now what I have to do ,get up at 4 am just to get loo roll.

My co-op are limiting toilet roll and cleaning products to 3 of each item. A good idea for the selfish among us. I witnessed a lady complaining because she wanted 6 rolls of Regina kitchen roll because "I thoroughly clean my house from top to bottom every day". A fellow customer commented "christ how mucky do you get?" I felt sorry for the poor girl on the till having to put up with this moron with a queue behind her.

polkadotdenim · 12/03/2020 13:52

I’ve just been forced to spend £8 on a small bottle of laundry detergent from an expensive fad brand I would never normally even glance at and £7 on some cleaning sponges that are for use without products so I can actually clean my home to an acceptable standard of hygiene. Amazon same day delivery also. £20 in total when usually it would cost me just £4.50 for what I need. No anti-bac or any cleaning solutions anywhere to be found.

MarshaBradyo · 12/03/2020 13:54

*I agree with you OP, it's ridiculous. Scaremongering has caused it - in a few months we will look back and wonder what on earth we were doing.

God forbid we face a real crisis*

I doubt the Italians in the frontline atm feel the same as you about no crisis.

Skyejuly · 12/03/2020 13:54

Numbers soon :( what time is the pm announcement?

polkadotdenim · 12/03/2020 14:06

We are in a first world country that, on a normal day, has endless supermarkets full to the brim of absolutely everything we need. Just how much have people been buying to make it so badly out of stock? Even though I don’t ‘prep’, I always have a big bag of pasta and a couple tins in the cupboard. I buy a large pack of toilet rolls (9) every 2/3 weeks depending on how much DH wastes🙄

The only thing that has really irritated me is lack of cleaning products. Where people not cleaning their homes before all of this? Why buy 20 bottles of Dettol or bleach when you can easily make 1 last a month if you use it sensibly. I have nothing but 1/4 bottle of Flash Bleach Spray and a cap full of all purpose cleaner. Yeah I could just use soap and water like ‘the good old days’ but when you’ve got people coming in and out the house that could have been exposed to the virus, you want peace of mind being able to disinfect surfaces.

polkadotdenim · 12/03/2020 14:08

lazyarse123 I too feel incredibly sorry for the shop workers right now. I have no doubt they will be getting all the malice from customers about lack of stock and buy limits on products

RedPandaBear · 12/03/2020 14:13

My Sainsbury's was almost out of loo roll and pasta, no paracetamol or long-life milk and the biscuit aisle was looking decidedly empty!

The store was a lot busier than normal but most people seemed to be respectful in what they were buying.

Only one person had a mad trolley full to the brim with multiples of the same products.

Makes you thing that there is a sense of 'we're all in it together' after all...

jmcg2015 · 12/03/2020 14:46

It's the attitude of those trying to justify their actions, even on here that amazes me. Do they not think that their selfishness leaves the elderly and infirm, who can't keep popping back to the shops to check stock? They will have no choice but to go without, while they are pleased with themselves that they have bulging cupboards for an event that may never happen, and if it does - they aren't being sent to the moon! Things would still be able to be bought, if it wasn't for all the other selfish morons just like them

BabyLlamaZem · 12/03/2020 14:55

Sorry, but it seems like you're angry because you havn't done it sooner. If you were more prepared you wouldnt be as annoyed. Online orders might be better?

PepePig · 12/03/2020 14:57

@jmcg2015

I agree. All this selfish buying has done has meant those who actually need the stock (elderly, immunocompromised people, etc), have to keep trekking out to get basic supplies, therefore increasing their risk of contracting Corona virus.

But, no, as long as Susan who has no health issues and is in their 40s has 30 bottles of bleach, 15 hand sanitizers and 340 toilet rolls... Hmm

DoubleAction · 12/03/2020 15:00

I can't understand why anyone, especially those responsible for children, wouldn't keep enough essentials in to last a week or two. In the usual course of things, there could easily be a situation where you can't get to the shops, or don't have any money for a while.

It's those who aren't responsible enough to keep a small stockpile who caused this. Stockpilers don't need to clear the shelves in an emergency, as they're already prepared.

And no, it's not that people dont have the cash. Buy an extra packet of paracetamol one week and a tin of beans the next but keep a bit in, then you're never faced with the prospect of having to stock up either.

jmcg2015 · 12/03/2020 15:03

Are you for real Baby? Good god listen to yourself? You are an awful person. Be quiet.

PepePig · 12/03/2020 15:04

@BabyLlamaZem

No one has any issues with people who have gradually bought items over x months. The issue is with panic buyers who clear entire shelves in one go, knowing that

A) they don't, and will never need, that many of one item
B) the shelves will be empty for everyone else who for multiple reasons, haven't been able to go shopping at 6am every morning to "get in there first"

It's just a shitty attitude to have. Also, I do have to laugh at the morons who say how they'll donate what they don't use to food banks after this is over. 30p butter beans aren't going to be much use then, are they?

buttermilkwaffles · 12/03/2020 15:06

Lidl yesterday was sold out of toilet paper but had plenty of kitchen roll, a 2 pack at 99p is the same size as a 4 pack of toilet paper, just get scissors and cut the paper in half. Wink

Buttybach · 12/03/2020 15:09

I'm an avid sewer so I have told my husband if the shit hits the fan we have plenty of fabric!!

LaCherriesJubilee · 12/03/2020 15:09

Once again, people are confusing panic buying and prepping.

This. I suppose I finally have reason to feel thankful for Brexit. We were always an "Oops no milk/bread/loo roll, can someone go to the shop" family before, but now we could close the front door and live comfortably on the Brexit stash for over a month. I think it probably has helped a little actually. Quite a lot of us can walk straight past the loo rolls/pasta/dettol knowing that we have plenty already. So it could have been worse...

FinalYearCrisis · 12/03/2020 15:11

In the context of loo roll, I completely misread that...

Kitchen roll isn't designed to be flushed. Make sure you don't if it comes to that or it could block your toilet.

00deed1988 · 12/03/2020 15:23

My husband gets paid tomorrow and we usually do a shop then but we are both here today so thought we would do it a day early.

Shops were crazy! We probably looked like we were panic buying with our huge trolley full but we really weren't, just doing a family of 4 monthly shop.

No toilet roll, no pasta, no rice, no paracetamol or ibuprofen, no handwash or soap, no beans, no spaghetti, no ravioli, minimal flour. Thankfully we have 3 packs of pasta and 2 rice still left as we tend to keep a stock up just incase and just top up each month and a pack of 24 toilet roll with only a few out of it but it is just crazy! So many people won't have these things and live week to week. It is just a pain. All the staff just look stressed and everyone running down aisles grabbing what they could!

Ninkanink · 12/03/2020 16:27

Went to asda today. I got a bag of quinoa, plus a few tins of cannellini beans and a few tins of chickpeas to make curries and stews. Will get butter beans, red kidney beans and a few more tins of chopped tomatoes tomorrow from a different store, as well as a couple of packs of beef mince. Also stocked up on frozen veg (carrot/celery/onion mix, mushrooms, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower cheese, mashed potato, parsnips, carrot and swede mash). Didn’t buy any fresh veg except some spring onions which I’ll chop up and freeze. One box of tampons for me, one box of pads for each of my daughters. One deodorant because my daughter needed one. Multipack of hobnobs/digestives/rich tea biscuits (priorities!!) and some cereal bars. Didn’t buy loo roll as we have enough to last at least a couple of weeks. Will probably buy another pack in a few days. That way we’ll probably have enough to last at least a month, but others will have had their fair pickings in the meantime.

kevintheorangecarrot · 12/03/2020 16:34

Bloody pathetic

Ninkanink · 12/03/2020 16:42

Oh posted on wrong thread, not really relevant to this one!

We’re not buying more than we normally would every other week or so, and not buying the bits that most people seem to be buying in bulk (we don’t eat a lot of pasta, or baked beans, for example). I may have said it on this thread already but we have to take sensible precautions as we have one member of our immediate family who is at much higher risk. I also do not want to be passing the virus on to anyone else we can help it; if things get more serious we want to be able to keep ourselves to ourselves if need be, for our own sakes but also for that of others who would be far worse off if they do get it.
