Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c, vit d

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 70% vol alcohol to any other additive

I've just been told by my neighbour that the young couple living opposite her were in Italy (just outside the lockdown zone) just over a week ago, they both work in the local coffee shop, one of them food handling. They couldn't afford to take time off work to self isolate!!
This scenario or ones very similar to it will be playing out all over the world right now, their boss is well aware of where they've been because it's the parent of one of them.

itsallwrongisntit · 11/03/2020 19:21

Sorry if this has been mentioned but does anyone know about the increased risk of COVID19 and hypertension?

I take 3 different medications and luckily mine is under control at the moment.

I'm worried as I'm a single mum and concerned if I get ill as no one to help with my DC.

Also, I've tried to do an online shop tonight and usually slots are there the next day. I've tried ASDA, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Morrison's and none of them have any slots for the next 2-3 days. People are definitely panic buying.

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 19:21

@screamer1 It is really tough- the Italy figures are scary.

I do think Italy represents a worst case scenario and we are not there yet in the UK. And hopefully other countries can learn from their mistakes (awful thing to say) and act sooner.

I hope their new quarantine measures start to slow things down.

I agree that Matt Hancock was totally tone deaf, all about MPs, nothing for the rest of us and very vague.

Oakmaiden · 11/03/2020 19:22

The medium article talks a lot about modelling and how the total number of infected people it calculated from the various types of data.

1, Using the UK numbers - If you assume a 1% mortality rate then, using the modelling in the Medium article, the total number of cases is probably around 6400 currently.

  1. A calculation using the number of tested "imported" cases multiplied by a community factor. I didn't understand this one well enough to attempt it for the UK numbers.
  1. Using the extrapolated Hubei data as a template. Basically they reckon, in hindsight, that when Hubei thought they had 440 cases then they actually had 12,000 cases.

So the end "take home" I have from this was that - it is expected that only a fraction of cases are visible. There are always undiagnosed cases. But that the government will be well aware that they are looking at the tip on an iceberg, and will have several estimations of how big the iceberg is underneath.

Lynamic · 11/03/2020 19:23

I'm glad you have brought this up, as if my dc had to go to hospital I would make sure they didn't know

aWeaponCalledtheWord · 11/03/2020 19:24

i have what is probably a stupid question.

i woke up today with a banging headache and have a temperature of 99.3

is this a high or normal temperature? i have arthritis and take methotrexate, and also have hypothyroidism.

apologies for being thick, i can’t seem to establish what is deemed as a fever. my temp on monday was 97.1 so it’s higher now, but i don’t know what constitutes a fever in terms of coronavirus.

help!

Jumpingintodarkness · 11/03/2020 19:25

Ok that last answer from matt re the football match and calling 111 has crushed any faith I had in the gov...

Saucery · 11/03/2020 19:25

Are online supermarket orders really panic buying, though? It might be people making small moves towards social distancing. If you can’t work from home etc then you can order in groceries rather than go to the shop.

Janemarpling · 11/03/2020 19:25

Follow the Science you are all wrong!

Show us the Science please Mr. Hancock instead if just fobbing us off.

GalOopNorth · 11/03/2020 19:25

I cannot believe he is in charge of this.

We’re fucked.

GalOopNorth · 11/03/2020 19:26

Yeah, of course the whole of the rest of the world is not following the science -

Yeah.

SubjectMatterExpert · 11/03/2020 19:27

@Sunshinegirl82, no I will watch it shortly

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 19:27

IMO, next week is too late. They need to be making decisions now, saying things like "When it gets to X cases, we will do X".

Someone upthread asked about hypertension- without wanting to alarm anyone, some initial data from China unfortunately seems to suggest hypertension is a significant risk factor for having a bad outcome. If you have hypertension, I would be trying to take as many measures as possible to reduce your chances of getting ill.

HeronLanyon · 11/03/2020 19:27

That is high. Attached a photo of typical symptoms to look out for. You can do an online assessment (nhs 111). Without other symptoms in itself it may not be anything to worry about.

Sunshinegirl82 · 11/03/2020 19:28

If Italy is at or approaching its peak then I'd say that continuing high numbers of people testing positive are to be expected.

Chris Whitty explains in the select committee interview that 95% of cases will be expected within a 9 week period and 50% of cases in the 3 weeks in the middle of that 9 week period.

Assuming the same pattern in Italy it will be some time yet before the figures start to drop.

middleager · 11/03/2020 19:28

Derby MP just said a £5 test has been developed in Derby that is used all over the world with an accurate result in 10 mins, but not here.
Urges MH to look at investing in this.

Jumpingintodarkness · 11/03/2020 19:28

He keeps pushing it back to 111.

111 being hailed as the Holy grail following the science?.
I've had personal experience today of the utter cock up of 111.

Lynamic · 11/03/2020 19:29

I just remembered I get high blood pressure

eeeyoresmiles · 11/03/2020 19:29

We all need to think and act as a community, and assess the risk to our community rather than individual risk.

Actually, for the sake of the community, we need to do both. If you have an underlying condition that makes you more vulnerable, for instance, you might be best starting social distancing sooner, because the chances are if you get ill you're going to take up more medical resources for longer. That's not good for the community as a whole. There doesn't seem to be anything in the current approach to allow for that, or it's being held off for later.

Even if you're well, there's a difference between thinking of the community as a whole and being ready to do your bit, and not questioning what's going on but just shutting up and feeling unconvinced instead.

GalOopNorth · 11/03/2020 19:30

I totally agree jumping

111 are basically saying

Stay home
Hope to fuck you don’t need additional help

Nearlyalmost50 · 11/03/2020 19:30

I am just worried that the Secretary for State is just repeating- we are doing what the science says, but this sounds like the science is certain and there's only one possible response to it (even going as far as to say others are not being scientific)-but the whole point is that the data is far from great coming out on this, I am not clear how certain the modelling is with an entirely new virus, you can't model it on flu entirely and our covid data is not consistent. There is also 'science' that says things like social distancing do work.

Also- the science doesn't say call crappy 111 and get fobbed off does it? So, why keep telling people to do this!

Jumpingintodarkness · 11/03/2020 19:31

No plan for mass closure of schools.

happymumof22019 · 11/03/2020 19:31

I really do feel like I’m living in a parallel universe. China, Italy etc have locked down and taken steps to try avoid a spread despite still going into crisis yet here we are a few weeks behind ignoring their voices of experience, the expertise of the who for “scientific advise” precisely what advice is this? Because all I have read is that an insignificant percentage of elderly or those who are ill will die? Seems like the torries are prepared to sit back and just throw those thousands of people under a bus. Disgusted doesn’t even come close to how I feel tonight. Patronising bunch of &£@ers

GalOopNorth · 11/03/2020 19:31

Question about schools, good

emsy86 · 11/03/2020 19:31

@YoursTunbridgeWells. Why would i spend my life questioning everything? when my husband tells me he loves me do i question it? no. When i check the weather for the next day to see if it will be nice to take the kids to the park, do i question it and check every other possible source of information? no. if the radio tells me there is a big traffic jam on the motorway do i get my phone out and check for myself... no i take a different route to work.

If you cant trust anything that anyone ever tells you then im sorry you have a very sad life. Right now the government and some of the best medical experts are trying to steer our country away from a potential health crisis... is it serious? yes of course it is but if i do not trust what they say i would go into a panicked frenzy like many of the people on here with health anxiety's.

People come on here for many reasons.. some with serious worry about this and then we have people like yourself and a few others telling them that the government doesn't have a clue and we are going to end up like Italy or Iran and that asthmatics will likely not even be seen or put in ICU. you dont know that to be a fact and it would be stupid and unfair of you to worry these people even more than they currently are!

There is a woman on another thread that got so scared reading this one that she has refused to hug her husband or children for a week. This was caused by people putting their opinions across and stating them as facts when it is complete guesswork or information coming from Facebook or Reddit and it is now causing problems in peoples personal lives!
