Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

       *********,

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

Theres an AMA on reddit atm.

A critical care doctor.

Theyve just said;

“The last time I checked, we had around twenty critically ill patients in the UK. This number may have increased. A week ago we had one. I believe that there are a number of patients on ECMO support.

These numbers are not being reported in the press for some reason.”

Facingtheunkown · 10/03/2020 16:44

Book

Thank you!!

So in what respect is the quarantine then?

How is it working?

lightandshade · 10/03/2020 16:44

Can anyone explain why people with symptoms are not being tested if they haven't travelled ? Are they trying to keep numbers down ?

Furfockssake · 10/03/2020 16:45

The more people who take this seriously, the better it will be. If that means people getting scared and doing a bit of panic buying I don't think that's such a bad thing. People need to be afraid to change their behaviour. Mathmatically even small changes in behaviour could really change the course of this emergency in the UK. Very interesting link to video illustrating how this works.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 10/03/2020 16:45

Still not understanding why people are still going to social events - don't they get the fact that anything non-essential a bad idea right now and why aren't the gov't pointing this out?

Panic is not looking at facts. It is a fact what is happening in Italy. Italy is on lockdown and the cases still rise....yes people can go to work and shop, that's it pretty much. It is also a fact what happened in China.

There is a word for looking at established facts and believing that somehow they don't apply to you.

FourTeaFallOut · 10/03/2020 16:47

But you do realise that if you are drama queening on this thread to frighten people in to compliance, you are simply frightening those people who are already organised and we'll aware of the seriousness of the situation?

MashedPotatoBrainz · 10/03/2020 16:47

If the time comes for hard decisions to be made about who gets life saving treatment, do they make that decision purely on medical grounds or do they consider other factors? For example if DH and I were both critically ill would they priorities me as I'm otherwise healthy whereas DH is severely asthmatic. Or would the fact that he's a vital part of the scientific community, while I do fuck all, play a part in the decision?

VanGoghsDog · 10/03/2020 16:47

@Cupofteaandtoilet

Thank you! I expect I will need to address this question weekly until dad dies, then consider how to support mum into the future.

MarshaBradyo · 10/03/2020 16:48

Sunshine I agree with you.

LeeMiller · 10/03/2020 16:48

Just delurking to say I am also in Italy and @BookMeOnTheSudExpress is speaking a lot of sense. The situation is bad enough without unreliable sources and poor translations spreading misinformation. As of yesterday ICU patients are being transferred to other regions (including mine) from Lombardy to help.

CustardySergeant · 10/03/2020 16:50

It's said that in 2 weeks the UK will be in the same position as Italy is now. Hospitals won't be able to cope. As a 66 year old with a 73 year old husband I'm getting concerned now. This article www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8095835/Overwhelmed-Italian-hospitals-running-200-cent-capacity.html says that they're not even assessing anyone over 65 let alone treating them. If that's what we're going to be faced with soon Sad Oh well, it was nice knowing you all.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 10/03/2020 16:50

@MashedPotatoBrainz no idea. I could see mps getting preferential treatment on basis they are needed to run the country or something.
What about people who are full time carers?

KOKOagainandagain · 10/03/2020 16:52

I don't know if anyone has been watching the Peak Prosperity channel on YouTube. The explanation of exponential growth is fantastic.

This demonstrates the importance of non medical interventions in preventing the peak overwhelming the health service.

Cupofteaandtoilet · 10/03/2020 16:52

VanGogh - it's bloody awful SadI still miss him every day. Don't miss the A14 though! Thinking of you Thanks

MmeAlice · 10/03/2020 16:54

Denmark's figures this afternoon in. We have jumped a huge number from 156 this morning (33 only yesterday morning) to 262 this afternoon.

I don't know what to think. Are we testing thoroughly and efficiently? Or have we only just caught up to the thousands of Danes walking around after coming back from their annual skiing holidays to Northern Italy? First case in my home town now.

EgonSpengler2020 · 10/03/2020 16:55

@ofwarren or anyone else

For each of the 6 deceased British patients, what was the route of transmission?

My understanding is that all or some of them were from community transmission, which would suggest they were infected in the UK approx 4 weeks ago (estimated 1 week incubation plus 3 weeks from first symptom to death). Which was when we had 12 cases (would need to check that figure) 11 of which were recovered and 1 was in isolation.

Hmmmm...Bit concerned with what this says about the current UK data!

ofwarren · 10/03/2020 16:55

New York state reports 31 new cases of coronavirus, raising state's total to 173. Schools and other places where people gather inside a one-mile radius in New Rochelle will be closed, governor says

Newjez · 10/03/2020 16:57

Looking at the number of cases compared to population, Italy looks to have gone way beyond China's worst period. I thought this interesting, as it means Italy is now ground breaking in the way it deals with this crisis. Hopefully we are all watching and learning.

MyFirstMyLastMyEverythingBagel · 10/03/2020 16:57

@cjt110 no, I'm in T & W. However if from what I've posted sounds similar to near where you are, again concerning. The community transmission element of all of this and people with no known travel / contacts falling ill but refusal to test despite displaying symptoms means the number of cases must surely be higher than we know.

alloutoffucks · 10/03/2020 16:58

People are still going to large events because the Government is telling them there is nothing to worry about. Its just like mild flu. Nothing to see here. If you keep telling people that, most people will believe it.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 10/03/2020 16:58

qz.com/1810072/singapore-government-takes-pay-cut-due-to-coronavirus/

Would be nice if our government did this.... they have fewer cases by far than us.

ofwarren · 10/03/2020 16:58

Egon I think the one in Manchester had been to Italy but I was under the impression the others were community transmission.
I can't remember for certain though.

Furfockssake · 10/03/2020 16:59

@FourTeaFallOut sorry if it came across that way but definitely haven't been dramaqueening on here, it was more an observation after watching the mathematical video that people being scared of COVID-19 is a good thing in terms of the likely change in outcome it produces.
