Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

       *********,

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

Any article, headline, story or post with the words possibly, could, maybe, potentially, worst case, etc we can all assume are at best an educated guess and at worse scaremongering!

BumpkinSpiceBatty · 10/03/2020 16:32

@Ledkr I was supposed to be takind the dc to see the new pixar one tonight but have just cancelled. Enclosed room with people sticking their fingers into their mouths when eating popcorn sounds awful at the moment
!

cjt110 · 10/03/2020 16:32

@MashedPotatoBrainz I'll bring me own

In all seriousness, has anyone thought about their home environment should self isolation be required?

We live in a duplex apartment - mine and DH bedroom is upstairs with an ensuite. The mezzanine has been closed off with photo panels. If one of us got it, we would isolate upstairs. But then what if more than 1 of us got it.

And would the picture panels suffice to block the area in for isolation (Not done for COV19 btw)

WorriedAcademic · 10/03/2020 16:32

Plenty of other comorbidities apart from asthma. Hope none of you doom mongers are overweight. healthy BMI will be one of the criteria for the ventilator.

MashedPotatoBrainz · 10/03/2020 16:32

I'm worried about the suggestion that everyone with a cough should isolate. If that does come into force I may have to stay in isolation forever seeing as I have bad allergies and a house full of cats (I can eat them when supplies run low!).

cjt110 · 10/03/2020 16:33

@MashedPotatoBrainz as long as you have them with meatball sauce.

Italy are reserving ICU beds for previously healthy people

Newjez · 10/03/2020 16:33

Covfefe .... Covid ???!

Maybe trump was way ahead of us on this?

Maybe that's why the doctors are amazed by how much he knows?

oneteen · 10/03/2020 16:33

Silly question.. Can the Government use Private Hospital facilities...to help relieve the NHS?

Random one but our flat has just gone on the market. Not sure how I feel about hoardes of strangers traipsing round it now. Thoughts?

onlinelinda · 10/03/2020 16:35

Is that a joke or a guess, WorriedAcademic?

MyFirstMyLastMyEverythingBagel · 10/03/2020 16:36

@juneybean missed you on the last thread. Aye Wink suspect we must be local to each other. Thanks for info, will keep an eye out for any further updates.

FollowingNow · 10/03/2020 16:36

In all seriousness, has anyone thought about their home environment should self isolation be required?

Not much point for us really, we live in a 2 bed flat with no garden and 1 bathroom between 3 of us (me, DH and toddler DS). I don't think we will even bother trying to self isolate within the household if one of us gets it.

seasmize · 10/03/2020 16:37

Interesting @anonacfr.

“ Lethality in Italy is higher than China because we are only doing swab tests on patients with symptoms, while we have estimated that asymptomatic cases might be around 15,000 at the moment. We are just scratching the surface of the virus diagnostics here. Also, the 6.1 percent lethality rate registered in Lombardy, shows that the healthcare system no longer holds. More people are dying because the system is saturated.”

If he’s correct the real CFR including asymptomatic cases is more like 2.5% I think, which is pretty in line with China’s overall numbers.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 10/03/2020 16:37

I agree with pp.
Twitter feeds are hardly reliable sources and neither are conspiracy bloggers.

I'll pop it here as I'm sick of reading his name.

Dr Daniele Macchini (,rentaquote for the UK press) is a proctologist in a private teaching hospital. He plays tennis. He is no more an expert of what is happening in ICU units than I am.

Other lies scattergunning:
Interpretation of the word lockdown.
People are working, shopping, taking their dogs for a walk, visiting the dentist.
No, not as much as before, but anybody who tells you they've got a second cousin whose neighbour's aunty is in total lockdown (as we understand it when we think of Prevent training) is lying.

Mortgage payments have not been suspended and nor have utility bills.

The British press and Twitter appear to have trouble with modal verbs. But I guess a "might eventually" or "ought to" doesn't have quite the shock aspect as "is to", "will" or "is"

And, yes, the worse case scenario of having to choose who to treat (in ICU) has been discussed. Worse case. Nobody has ever ever said that an asthmatic will not be treated in our hospitals.

Yes, some hospitals aren't accepting emergency admissions even for non Covid cases. That'll be because, like the hospital where I live, they're not emergency hospitals.

Furfockssake · 10/03/2020 16:37

I think we have to accept that IF the NHS is overwhelmed, then very difficult decisions would have to be taken about who they will treat in ICU. Whether they will be overwhelmed will be down to how well the delay and mitigation strategies are carried out. But it is a possibility - we have the lowest number of ICU beds per capita in Europe.

cjt110 · 10/03/2020 16:37

@MyFirstMyLastMyEverythingBagel Is your county beginning with K?

YoursTunbridgeWells · 10/03/2020 16:40

Even a 2.5% CFR is horrid. That's one in 40 people. The Italy CFR is 1/16 I think with the disease.

onlinelinda · 10/03/2020 16:41

Summerhouse, it's 373.

Sunshinesky1981 · 10/03/2020 16:41

Yes , we all know that if things get bad they will have to prioritise care to maximise survival rates, no one is doubting that . But simply saying 'if you have asthma you won't even get a chance to see a doctor' is scaremongering bollocks. For a start there are masses of other factors at play. People will have to be Triaged - Ie they will see a medical professional. There are a wide range of Severity of Asthma, some people will have more than one type of medical condition. age will be a factor, stage of illness. It's not as simple as don't even bother turning up at the hospital if you have asthma as we are not even going to asses you

Lynatic · 10/03/2020 16:41

Started thinking maybe get out while there's time. You could only know whether you overreacted or not when it's running out

Newjez · 10/03/2020 16:42

@oneteen
Not a silly question but private tend not to do a&e and don't have a lot of ICU. But, it's quite conceivable that the non Cv19 cases which can't be delayed could be moved to private. I would hope someone is looking into that.

Quartz2208 · 10/03/2020 16:42

I think its true that the older you are and the more comorbidities you have the less likely you will be treated but the flip side of that is the less likely you will be to survive.

Its sadly all about making sure the bed goes to the patient who has the highest chance of survival

The other thing is that just because Italy got this bad doesnt mean we will. Weirdly it doesnt always work like that - in China the epicentre of Wuhan was worse. If Italy is the epicentre (and remember the difference in size and population of the 2 isnt that different).

That said that does mean we should be containing to stop the spread

RainydaysandMondaysalways · 10/03/2020 16:42

@Cupofteaandtoilet yes I've been checking that site regularly because i like to see the numbers of people recovered and classed as being in a mild condition rather than total number of cases.
Out of nearly 117k cases, nearly 65k recovered.
