Anyone else in Spain and finding the jump in numbers from yesterday to today shocking? www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/world/coronavirus-maps.html 700 to 1070 in one day.

To be honest, I would think they are safer where they are right now. In two weeks I don't think the UK will be in a good place. But obviously I don't know.

Don't worry though, I think they will be very safe here.

I think Spain are just taking instant (very) strict measures.

Nameisthegame · 14/03/2020 19:25

@AutumnLeavesSeptember they maybe better staying the U.K. isn’t doing great and the nhs it’s already feeling the strain. They think there might be actually 10000 cases in the U.K. but they aren’t really testing anyone.

How are people feeling? I'm a little concerned about working from home with a 4 and 6 year old. Also the mental health aspect of being shut in for potentially weeks. Luckily we do have a garden and some shared social space for our little row of houses. Our kids were the only ones outside today - looks like the other kids in the street are literally staying in the house.

We managed to do several shopping trips last week and got enough to keep us going for a few weeks if things get bad. Tomorrow I'm going to do some freezer batch cooking - things like mashed potato and pasta sauces. Hoping we will still be able to get fresh bread every day.

I feel sad today. I can't see any end in sight, I hate being cooped up, and I'm not going to see my UK family in months at this rate. I think our Easter flights home are highly unlikely. 😢

Nameisthegame · 14/03/2020 20:03

@Novia it will be okay xx 💚 it’s great that you have a garden I’m sure you’ll work it out maybe you can do some treasure hunts. My mum used to set a timer and f we left her alone until it went off we would get a cookie.

You can take them with you to the shop, I dunno I’m still feeling the shock of all the parks being closed and having to tell my kid that they’re sick. Worst bit is that we can see one from our bedroom window.

@nameisthegame - that's a really tough one to sell! We have the national park behind us but won't be able to go. Trampoline in the garden will be the highlight in coming weeks - though they haven't touched it in a year. It's also meant to rain all next week! Not sure I would even take them to the shops as they would be a nightmare for touching stuff and people would get shirty I think. I'll mostly send DH.

MissMoiselle · 14/03/2020 20:33

Here is a "condensed" overview of Handsome Pedro's address to the Nation:

Don't rely on "statistics". Look after yourselves and don't take chances.

Police and military to react to Ministry of Interior. As soon as necessary, armed forces will be deployed to keep the peace.

Only allowed outside for necessities (supermarket, doctor, pharmacy, helping the vulnerable). Ministry of Interior can and will close roads as and if needed.

All unnecessary shops/ establishments to remain closed (he included pet stores on this!)

Maintain 1 metre distance to anyone at anytime

Any large buildings can be "commandeered" by the state to guarantee additional health services.

Didn't say anything about air travel (mentioned bus and train and maritime though)

Lockdown to last 14 days with possibility of extension

All regions to make decisions as and if needed on top of the national directives already given.

Urges people to rely on real news from the countries info channels, rather than social media.

People need to take care of themselves and isolate. Not brush it off and put vulnerable people at risk. Show solidarity by keeping people safe.

Novia · 14/03/2020 20:38

@missmoiselle - thank you for taking the time to translate. My Spanish is passable, but I couldn't follow a speech like that. And DJ only gives me the highlights!

Novia · 14/03/2020 20:39

Do we think it'll be just 2 weeks? Seems unlikely to me as what will have changed in that time? Surely it will rage out of control again when we all go back to normal?

Nameisthegame · 14/03/2020 20:45

@Novia mot likely two but possibly 5 weeks with the half term...who knows. I can s it going like Italy considering the numbers o people infected at over 6000.

OP posts:
MissMoiselle · 14/03/2020 20:48

I have a feeling it will take more than 2 weeks. It will likely get extended. We'll know what Italy's plan of action is soon i guess, that will give us an idea on what will be done in Spain.
The problem is here that Madrid as a hotspot was not contained, and from there, it spread like wildfire. The numbers are worrying indeed. But i worry that people are not taking this seriously. I get soooo annoyed whenever i hear the "just a flu" crap people are still relying on. I worry about my grandma in portugal, I worry about people getting cabin fever, I worry about looting... on the bright side, we are very lucky to have a big garden to get some fresh air and exercise outside. I feel for people who are confined to their appartments and for the poor children who don't understand what's going on. I'm gonna need a large glass of wine now. Sending positive thoughts to everyone, at least us Spain Expats have got each other for moral support! Keep safe, physically and mentally Wine

Tbh I don’t know with spain they are a law upon themselves

I think Macrons statement today about half the cases in ICU are under the age of 60, will start to focus people’s minds in all countries!

sigmu87 · 14/03/2020 20:52

In France obviously.

Nameisthegame · 14/03/2020 20:55

I’m not too worried about looting I don’t live in a rich area and there’s a lot of security to get through and. I’m a top flat. I’m worried for my elderly neighbors down stairs but I’m sure it will be okayish. I’ve lived in 4 different countries and never experienced anything like this.

MissMoiselle · 14/03/2020 20:55

Dog walking (according to a radio announcement on a British station here in ALC) is NOT allowed. What are people meant to do if they don't have a garden?

MissMoiselle · 14/03/2020 20:57

@sigmu87 oh I didn't know that! Well that's an eye-opener!

BirdandSparrow · 14/03/2020 20:58

I think at least until semana Santa.

Nameisthegame · 14/03/2020 20:59

@sigmu87 I’ve been telling people that! It’s not jut the elderly, people have a false sense of security. It’s all well and good saying we will be okay because of modern medical facilities but if our hospitals collapse then what? The poor man in Italy stuck with the dead body of his sister haunts me.

Nameisthegame · 14/03/2020 21:07

No way people can keep there dogs in, most people live in flats. I’ve got two cats and plenty of litter but no one is prepared for dogs and they would go stir crazy. I’ll be fine with isolation I have lots of projects including doing a bike up for my daughter and making a teepee but I’m not a social butterfly extroverts are going to struggle.

OP posts:
Novia · 14/03/2020 21:08

Yes, it's not just catching it, it's also the lack of beds for other illnesses! Full hospital means everyone suffers, regardless of what illness you have.

My SIL might have it. She watched our kids for the night just over a week ago, and last weekend the kids visited the 80+ year old Abuelos in Salamanca. It's all very worrying.

Nice (IYKWIM) to have some Spain-based online buddies though. Cheers and good luck! 🥂

I hadn't seen this thread.

We're in Barcelona. Outskirts and have a house with a garden so the DC can play outside.
We're very lucky to be in the position we're in. Just feel relief that the government is taking control tbh.
I think the lockdown will be longer than 2 weeks.

Ofitck · 14/03/2020 21:23

My city (San Sebastian/Donostia) has just held an unofficial minute of applause for the medical staff at 10pm - everyone leaning out of windows and clapping and cheering. Brought a tear to my eye!

I understand you - 2 yr old and 6 yr old here. We took them to the mountains today - can we still do that? Miles of mountains and hardly a soul around.
