Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

       <strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong>**,

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

Im not necessarily saying they would, but its an idea right?

It might also be non-negotiable repurposing of labour.

I'm not sure what you're saying.

"they are still going to socialise outside of work"

but in much smaller groups in each others homes
The PM seems not to want even this - "stay home" - but I expect it would be impossible to enforce

Noone - including the PM - can predict how this will turn out

Freezingold · 09/03/2020 22:07

@Bearbehind personally I would have liked to see a dedicated Coronavirus team as in Singapore, where each case has been tracked and identified and contacts/places quarantined speedily and decisively. We did that in Brighton to good effect. Anyone arriving from an affected zone required to follow up and keep in touch once every 24 hours. Technology makes that quite possible to have kept that up for a good few weeks. It could have made the containment phase much longer.

My husband has tickets for the Liverpool Champions League match on Wednesday and, being a life-long fanatic, is very keen to still go. Is there any explanation as to why the government have advised that attending such events isn't a significant risk? I can't see any reason why it wouldn't be! For the duration of the match itself he'll have any number of other fans (who will have travelled there from any number of locations globally) seated within a 2m radius of him, and many many more in extremely close proximity whilst entering and exiting the stadium, and at half-time, etc.

He seems more concerned about catching a quiet train from our city in the North East to Liverpool in the middle of a weekday than being present at the match itself.

Someone on the last thread was puzzled about why funerals are banned in Italy- this is because 60 (yes 60) people were all linked through one funeral in Italy. I guess they did a lot of hugging and crying that day. So funerals and weddings banned.

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 22:10

Boston's St. Patrick's Day Parade, scheduled for 3/15/20, is being cancelled. This decision is being made out of an abundance of caution to ensure that we are doing what is needed to keep the residents of Boston safe and healthy. t.co/JzO9v4LZHH

@BigChocFrenzy a democracy based on the opinions of people that don't wash their hands

Horehound · 09/03/2020 22:10

Oh dear, people will lose their weddings and likely not be reimbursed. Eek

FourTeaFallOut · 09/03/2020 22:10

There is a coronavirus patient from Sunderland at South Tyneside District Hospital. I'm not sure if they were a patient who was found to have coronavirus or if they came in with the illness yet.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 22:11

"Is there any explanation as to why the government have advised that attending such events isn't a significant risk?"

They don't think we've reached that stage yet

However, Boris has only just started to avoid handshakes
Maybe when he is advised to avoid matches, he'll also recommend against them for the public

ifonly4 · 09/03/2020 22:11

Just noticed Dad's hands are red raw and bumpy (she had this a bit in the summer but it's far worse). She says it's the hand washing and anti bac. Would it still help if she just washed with water? Any other suggestions?

Freezingold · 09/03/2020 22:11

Also, I have said it before. But remember the HOLEY CHEESE SLICE analogy (from that fellow on channel 4 news)

No one slice of intervention is perfect. Hand washing, social distancing, catching your sneezes in a tissue, working from home if able, good tracking and awareness of possible cases and hot spots...

However, like slices of cheese, put them all together and there are far fewer holes!

stella1know · 09/03/2020 22:11

Were there any repercussions for the fancy lady who gave the Hanoi couple the virus? She must have caught it from someone and she probably isn’t quarantined nor her contacts followed up? Hopefully I am wrong and this isn’t just for show?

Facingtheunkown · 09/03/2020 22:12

I Lydia.

I cannot believe that game is going ahead with 7000 fans from Spain coming... can't believe it.

I wouldn't go anywhere near it .

Captaindobbin · 09/03/2020 22:12

These threads are highlighting to me why a lockdown here won’t work. Lots of people crying for lockdowns and the schools to shut but then assuming they’ll still be able to walk the dog and go on 80km bike rides and still go running etc etc Hmm

Facingtheunkown · 09/03/2020 22:13

Freezing, I missed the holey cheese, thanks for explaining it again.

fedup21 · 09/03/2020 22:14

The numbers in Italy are just scary.

I can’t see what ‘self isolating for 7 days if you have a cold, but not for 10-14 days’ will do? Why not 14 days?

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 22:14

Thanks for the info about the Italian funeral ban, @Nearlyalmost50
I thought that rather surprising, but it makes sense now
