Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

       <strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong>**,

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

@Nearlyalmost50 wow so 60 people were linked to one funeral? I can’t think of a more clear reason to reduce big events - however painful it is not to have them - there is the evidence.

SistemaAddict · 09/03/2020 22:14

Oooh I'd love a snow day! A snow day would be fun and not cause any anxiety, and of course doesn't have the potential to put me in ITU.
I'm a SAHP but have recently started a course for a change of career. One day off is the most you can take in order to achieve the desired attendance. I'm not sure of the consequences of less than desired on course outcomes but any self isolation is going to impact on that and therefore I really don't want it to be necessary. If it is, then it is but it's certainly not something I'm hoping for unlike a snow day. As long as it's not on the day of the week the course is onGrin

AbsentmindedWoman · 09/03/2020 22:14

Social distancing is so important, and it is not a black and white affair. It's not about everyone being perfect and meticulous and distancing in every capacity across daily life. So going to work for those who can't work from home is essential. But going to a packed cinema or nightclub is not essential for anyone.

If we all do what we can to limit their interaction, transmission will slow, and that's what we all need right now.

Kinda incredulous at those who wonder if quarantine means they can still go for a walk or cycle 80km Hmm Seriously, the selfishness is breathtaking.

Haworthia · 09/03/2020 22:14

Water alone is no good @ifonly4, but try bar soap. I find it MUCH less harsh than liquid soap.

Facingtheunkown · 09/03/2020 22:15

Captain.

I work in a setting with around 1500 people.
Dc in school around 400 pupils and staff maybe more.. Dc secondary about 1000?

Compared to myself and 2 dc in the middle of a wood with perhaps a dog walker in the near distance?

VeniVediViciTwice · 09/03/2020 22:16

Thanks for new thread, they are moving fast.

Facingtheunkown · 09/03/2020 22:16

Put it this way, if I and all my neighbours go into our gardens I'll be closer to them than I would be on any walks

Kassia978 · 09/03/2020 22:17

She says it's the hand washing and anti bac. Would it still help if she just washed with water? Any other suggestions?

Soap is necessary for hand washing to be effective. Anti bac and frequent hand washing can be pretty hard in the skin though, so personally I’d suggest getting a good moisturizer to counteract the dryness.

Packingsoapandwater · 09/03/2020 22:17

I had a feeling things were "off" in Italy (sorry, I can't think of a better way to put it), but I'm still shocked at this development.

It suggests to me that the UK government has been trying to manage public anxiety carefully, fearing that panic might cause more damage than the virus itself.

Well, the cat's out of the bag now, isn't it? Sad

Fucking hell.

Facingtheunkown · 09/03/2020 22:17

Re funeral was it Italy or Spain?

Freezingold · 09/03/2020 22:19

I’ve got DH on the case now at work. I showed him a lot of the links that people have posted here, and we talked about worldwide responses etc. He works for a huge major employer so he’s now fired up and has been talking with top management about implementing more changes at work and has also written to MPs etc! I think once you understand the implications it becomes clearer that we should do what we can now, and not be saying go about your normal business and just wash hands. It isn’t enough.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 22:19

Yep, pp will continue to justify why they should be allowed their walks

However, many people work with just a few others
It will make a difference to them

and we can't allow some people to walk and not others

Laniakea · 09/03/2020 22:19

I read about a funeral in Spain being at the centre of a huge cluster. I might be misremembering though :/

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 22:21

I'm a gym rat - 6 days per week there
and I walk along the Rhine 1-2 a daily

I love my exercise and it is important to me psychologically, but ....
if we are ordered to stay home, I will do so, no quibbling or looking for loopholes

I am not speshul

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 22:21

@ifonly4
Try a baby bar soap and use a good eczema cream like diprobase.

Laniakea · 09/03/2020 22:24

Yup me too BigChoc, I walk to stay sane 20k steps a day - early morning late a night, I don’t stop to talk to people but if I’m asked to isolate I will without a moment’s hesitation - no more walks. I mean ffs what is wrong with people.

Captaindobbin · 09/03/2020 22:24

Yes and if everybody treats their two week quarantine as a time to go rambling in the woods?
Anyway it’s beside the point. You’re supposed to stay in your house. You don’t get to decide your activity is safe enough while everyone else can be stuck indoors

A very interesting and mathematical episode on Peak Prosperity tonight. I'd double check anything said, but I think most of the information is reasonably valid, just given a fair amount of spin. I thought this was an interesting graph. Note the logarithmic scale. As Professor Albert Bartlett said, "The greatest shortcoming of the human race is our inability to understand the exponential function."

@ofwarren FFS. He's following in Trumps footsteps then with the utter drivel he's spouting.

Comenext · 09/03/2020 22:27

The next COBRA meeting will be on Wednesday 11th March.
Who decides the dates of the meetings?
Why not every day?
This CV infection is fast-moving and therefore needs constant supervision.

usernameishistory · 09/03/2020 22:27

Also, for sore hands use thick cream and gloves overnight to give overwashed hands time to recover.

Another nice and useful infographic. I've seen it before, but not in English. It's not a projection, just more an explanation of the aim of containment. (I know most on here have seen it before, but it's always useful to have on hand to demonstrate ideas to other people).
