Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

Completely agree with you @Rocketmam

usernameishistory · 10/03/2020 15:07

@Furfockssake

I don't think the number of fatalities is goong to ever tally with number of reported cases, because of lag, and wider community undetected cases.

Sorry if I've misinterpreted your pp...on the hoof a bit at the mo.

I post so much I lose track 🙈

TheRealHousewife · 10/03/2020 15:08

@Delatron I think there are less tests because fewer people are meeting the criteria for testing iyswim.

Rocketmam · 10/03/2020 15:08

I think you are right Furfockssake

I just meant I'd feel better from a personal standpoint. I could inform my own decisons better and that the government were being as transparent as possible.

I understand the need to avoid panic but I think they've over played that somewhat, and now a lot of people aren't concerned at all as it's 'only' so many cases.

usernameishistory · 10/03/2020 15:08

@TheRealHousewife thank you

AvocadoOwl · 10/03/2020 15:09

That's an interesting table @wheresmymojo. Has anyone seen similar anywhere for French or German testing figures?

The more you test the more you will find. Short of testing vast numbers (which we don't have the capacity to do anyway) I think all testing figures represent a snapshot. Presumably the powers that be are happy that our current testing numbers enable us to track with reasonable accuracy the more general rise in cases?

Bearbehind · 10/03/2020 15:09

The statistics tell us that cases are being under reported through a lack of testing.

With 6 deaths we should have, statistically, at around 600 positive cases (assuming fatality rate is around 1%), and that would have been 600 cases at least three weeks ago.

Surely logic dictates that the ultimate measure of spread is the number of deaths and that is 6 (and wasn’t the first of those a Brit elsewhere)

The percentage of positive to negative tests is very low at 0.014%

Even if there are people who have it and haven’t been tested, they’re not dying from it and presumably they’re not I’ll enough to be in hospital as they’d be tested there

People do seem to be somewhat obsessed on here with seeing the numbers shoot up when it’s not at all clear why that is desirable

NeurotrashWarrior · 10/03/2020 15:09

In a way, I think if people rely on testing they won't take as many measures as they should.

This is now down to individuals to be cautious, the next step is for the government to intervene.

Yes, it looks like the bus reference that housewife has helpfully posted a shot of.

OP posts:
Furfockssake · 10/03/2020 15:10

@usernameishistory no worries - that was approximately what I was saying, that I would expect from the number of deaths that there are a lot of positive cases that haven't been tested for yet. I don't think we would ever expect to see a totally accurate reflection of the number of cases, and weirdly I'm not sure whether at this point it really matters? I think we know that cases will rise over the next two weeks, and after that the risk of getting the virus increases dramatically.

Oakmaiden · 10/03/2020 15:13

We don't really know who is being tested, though, so it is hard to make sensible inferences from the data we have. I am sure the powers that be know who is being tested though, so it should be more helpful to them.

Assuming it is predominately close contacts of infected patients and returning travellers who show symptoms, then you would expect the proportion of positive tests to be significantly higher than the proportion of infected cases still in the wild (though 4% of 66 million is over 2 million- - and you would think we would have noticed that!). Testing contacts is probably giving some useful statistics on how likely you are to catch it after contact with a carrier, though.

ToughGuy · 10/03/2020 15:13

I really think the Gov do not give a shit about us plebs, the lack of controls, lack of testing, lack of clear guidance other than wash your fucking hands. At least this will sort out the older age problem for themHmm

Will see what if anything comes out of the Cobra meeting tomorrow, won't be holding my breath. Sad

Does anyone know what time the cobra meeting is tomorrow?

picklemewalnuts · 10/03/2020 15:15

@avocadoowl, according to DR John Campbell it's very reliable. They have CCTV, they have had time to look at it, it's their specialism.

Delatron · 10/03/2020 15:15

Yes fewer people are meeting the test criteria so less tests. But we are seeing community spread...

middleager · 10/03/2020 15:15

Chipotle You are right, they have not been swabbed because they've not been abroad.

He says this is following a GP consultation, based on where he works and his symptoms. Apparently GP said fits the profile of cv and the man is now self isolating.

But yes, we do only have his word for it (and GP telephone assessment allegedly), so I do stand corrected that it is not a swabbed diagnosis.

But this is why we need more testing. This is what concerns me.
