Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

       <strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong>**,

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

That's what I think Defen.

I missed whether the eternally optimistic bbc travel correspondent was still saying 'it's a great time to travel? '

RedToothBrush · 10/03/2020 15:42

I read a very interesting article by a scientist who said if we assume the fatality rate is 1 per 100 people, and that it takes approximately three weeks between catching the virus and dying from it, we can assume that if in the past week we have seen 6 deaths, that three weeks ago 600 people were infected.

Except the Italians have been saying that the very elderly and frail are dying much more quickly than 3 weeks. Same has been said in Washington. The 3 week thing came from Wuhan observations, but again it doesn't seem to be true of the most at risk.

So I'd caution about doing calculations based on the 3 week assumption at this point.

news.sky.com/story/coronavirus-italian-doctor-says-fighting-covid-19-outbreak-is-like-war-11954229

This must not be underestimated. People have to understand that if we get anything close to Italy's state, there will be no treatment for those with co-morbidities - this includes asthma. This includes kids.

Random18 · 10/03/2020 15:45

Just read the last couple of pages and lots of assumptions on this thread Hmm

KarenTookTheKids · 10/03/2020 15:46

Jrob, I don't think anyone can really give you more details on a specific case unfortunately. However it is highly unlikely that she will have been in the maternity area or that midwives or obstetricians will have been in the area that she was in. I really would try and not worry Smile

ChipotleBlessing · 10/03/2020 15:46

I’ve just looked at the article about the hospital infections in the Netherlands and it’s important to point out that those were tests in hospitals where patients with the virus have been treated in a known hotspot, not random unexplained hospital infections.

Ontopofthesunset · 10/03/2020 15:47

Where have you found the information that children with asthma are not being treated in Italy? That is ridiculous fearmongering.

ChipotleBlessing · 10/03/2020 15:48

@Jrobhatch29, she went to the GP on Thursday not the hospital. It sounds like she was picked up and isolated almost immediately when she went to hospital the next day and transferred to the hospital where she’s being treated.

FourTeaFallOut · 10/03/2020 15:48

I can't see anything about asthma in that link @YoursTunbridgeWells?

ChipotleBlessing · 10/03/2020 15:49

@YoursTunbridgeWells get your anxiety under control and stop these wild scaremongering speculations. The situation as it is is bad enough without you needing to do that.

Homkaismycat · 10/03/2020 15:50

@yourstunbridgewells
I read it, what you mean we don’t get treatment? If having asthma.?
My child has asthma, I got more than serious lung condition which could be fatal even without corona..

FourTeaFallOut · 10/03/2020 15:50

Why would there not be any help for people with asthma, surely oxygen, ventolin and even those who caution use of steroids have said it's still to be used for asthmatics.

KarenTookTheKids · 10/03/2020 15:51

Homk, I strongly advise that you ignore that link. Children have fared well so far and it seems likely a fair few of those children will have had asthma..... That post is simply scaremongering.

Homkaismycat · 10/03/2020 15:51

@yourstunbridgewells
This gave me total anxiety! Thanks a lot

KarenTookTheKids · 10/03/2020 15:53

Homk, unfortunately there are a few regular posters here who wish to spread their own anxiety to others Sad I have been around since the first thread(with several name changes) and its been happening since the start really.

lightandshade · 10/03/2020 15:53

I'm just wondering how 111 decide who to test and who not , my auntie currently has all the symptoms but told because she hasn't been to a red zone she doesn't need

TheRealHousewife · 10/03/2020 15:54

@wheresmymojo One person with CV got off the bus, 30 mins later someone got on the bus and sat in a different part of the bus and still caught it

Wasn’t it the case that they all got of the bus and 30 minutes later when a new bus load alighted a single person from the new group was infected from the prior contamination.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 10/03/2020 15:54

Asthma is a comorbidity for CV. Article says if you have a comorbidity you won't be treated for CV. You won't even see a doctor.

Other articles have said (and none of these have bee verified but popped up on several sources) to say hospitals so full they are not treating ANY emergencies including strokes, heart attacks etc.

tryingtoprep · 10/03/2020 15:54

@RedToothBrush I'm not sure all the people who've died in the UK were frail? So far it's been older people with underlying conditions (which may well have been well managed) but at least two had recently returned from holidays. Presumably they were well enough to fly. I think in many people's minds "frail" equals more or less bedbound in a care home.

In Italy, I thought I'd read treatment was delayed (initially at least before they knew it was spreading). I think I've heard early treatment increased chances of survival, which makes sense.

@Defenbaker If they're refusing to test lots of people, the official numbers won't really rise.

Changedmyname84 · 10/03/2020 15:55

What does this mean kids with asthma won’t be treated? That’s despicable and horrible thing to say.

Quartz2208 · 10/03/2020 15:55

What is says is that they assess on the basis of the chances of survival. If they feel there is little chance they wont treat and will focus on those that they can

But they do that a little at the moment anyway. My Nan was admitted at the start of this year with a UTI that was resistant to antibiotics. They didnt intervene due to an assessment of whether there was any effective treatment. This will just be on a larger scale.

Mutli car piles up etc the same takes place

YoursTunbridgeWells · 10/03/2020 15:56

I am not scaremongering. I have to accept that I too am in the not-treatable pile for this thing. I have confirmed with an ITU consultant that they too would take the approach of not treating young people with comorbidities.
It's not anxiety. It is something we have to understand.

Homkaismycat · 10/03/2020 15:57
