About the self isolation compliance;

Listening to a local radio station this morning, two taxi drivers rang in to say that they had collected families from the airport over the weekend and discovered mid journey that they had travelled from Milan. The drivers were furious with the passengers and terminated the journey early, refusing to drive them any further once they realised. They both said the families were completely bemused.

How bloody selfish is that? I realise they have to get home, but surely there has to be a better way. I don't know what the answer is though Confused

Lumene · 09/03/2020 11:18

Yet no other countries have closed their parliaments or equivalents wheresmymojo

But they have closed schools, banned large events, and locked down specific areas.

Very bad look for the U.K. govt to be talking about their own interests first.

MrsFitzwilliam · 09/03/2020 11:19

Thank you all so much for the advice. I will write a lovely letter of thanks and give it to the secretary. It's like living in a parallel universe at the moment isn't it?

UtterlyPerfectCartoonGiraffe · 09/03/2020 11:20

wheresmymojo thanks for the recommendation, I will look for that book Smile Slightly off topic but another interesting book about viruses was “The Hot Zone” about Ebola/Reston virus and a possible outbreak in the USA. Interesting but nerve wracking!

A school in Rugby Warwickshire has a pupil tested positive. Hope the link works and I'm not repeating other posts. Havent had time to read through posts xx

@usernameishistory
Doors were taped up for people in isolation eg returning to China. They were not infected but on arrival you need to self isolate for 14 days.
If you arrive from Italy, Iran or South Korea you cannot self isolate at home and will be taken to a hotel for quarantine for 14 days. This Is for people with no symptoms on arrival.
We were advised there were serious consequences for non compliance. I imagine that means a fine, being forcibly removed from your home and quarantine in a less pleasant environment or possibly prison.

WingingItSince1973 · 09/03/2020 11:22

Darn it link didnt work! It's in the Rugby Advertiser. Look on their facebook page. School not closing!

Are they still thinking of closing down parliament? I hadn't heard anymore about it on the news and thought the idea had been dismissed as a bad one.

wheresmymojo · 09/03/2020 11:23

I think closing Parliament is a logical move but I agree the PR side will look bad.

Unfortunately I think the Govt is happy to do anything that has no economic impact.

There's no economic impact to closing Parliament but there's an economic impact to closing schools. That's what's driving it.

Carlislemumof4 · 09/03/2020 11:23

@ofwarren I specified if not under strict quarantine or medically diagnosed but experiencing symptoms that could be coronavirus or could be any other number of winter viruses. We wouldn't be tested as haven't travelled abroad. Many are in that situation now. I would be worried about spread in case of what the virus was but also have a large family to feed, children needing fresh air.

We are already socially distancing from extended family who do travel widely, I'm a SAHM, DH working from home, as I've said before we want the option to keep the children off school without sanctions.

I found more detailed info about how the virus is spread helpful in relation to all of that but also if we were under official quarantine feeling happy we could still use our garden without a high risk of spread to others, get shopping delivered to the front garden.

I would only want to use an online delivery slot if absolutely necessary, they get booked up easily as it is and I live in an area with many vulnerable residents who need them far more than me when I drive and own a car.

MrsStrangerThing · 09/03/2020 11:23

I also heard a woman interviewed who is currently on the cruise ship near California. She is there with her elderly parents who in their 80's and one has asthma. She still thinks they are well and healthy and at very low risk. They boarded the cruise believing this would never happen to them. In a few days, they will be moved to a military camp and she is worried that the 'comfort and service' will be much poorer than the '5 star quarters in the cruise ship' Hmm She is also concerned as she believes she will have to isolate alone in the military base for 2 weeks, she is currently with her parents chatting and playing games. Unreal. What the hell were they thinking??

Awkward1 · 09/03/2020 11:23

And they don't think kids are worse. If they all were to be mildly symptomatic that's 600 kids home to 2 parents plus younger siblings
Kids going to other activities

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 11:24

I know @MrsFitzwilliam
I can't get my head round it at times.
My son is severely immunosuppressed and has been self isolated for 11 days.
To be honest, it's flown but how long is this going to be? I just can't risk him getting ill. We almost lost him once and I can't go through that again.
It feels like a film or something. It's surreal.

alloutoffucks · 09/03/2020 11:25

@wheresmymojo I understand what you are saying, but there are other companies where staff are based in a shared office and travel all over the country. There is no guidance for those firms to close if there is a case. So yes it will be seen as one rule for MPs, another rule for everyone else.

plaidpyjamas · 09/03/2020 11:26

MPs don't sit much closer together in parliament than people do in cinemas, theatres, football stadiums and schools. And MPs are no more likely to be superspreaders than anyone else travelling regularly for work. I have no problem with a decision to close parliament but it would set a terrible example to only close parliament and nowhere else.

ShanghaiDiva · 09/03/2020 11:26

@AnneKipanki
Yes, a lot of management and rules are not open to individual interpretation.

confusedandtired99 · 09/03/2020 11:26

I agree with @plaidpyjamas and @alloutoffucks

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 11:27

CarlisleMum it's ONLY 2 weeks. Just 2 weeks to keep people like my son safe.
I've been at home with him for the last 11 days because I can't trust that people who have symptoms will self isolate.

Agree plaid
The decision has to be across the board.

wheresmymojo · 09/03/2020 11:28

I totally agree.

It's totally driven by economic impact over lives.

But that's a Tory Govt for you...

That being said people in China tend to have quite a lot of savings (cultural thing) and we have a lot of people here who don't (me included so not judging).

Those people will struggle to survive if they are self employed, only get SSP, are on zero hour contracts.

Lots of small businesses would just go bankrupt - think of nurseries for example.

Captaindobbin · 09/03/2020 11:30

I hope people are joking when they’re asking can they just nip out for a walk whilst self isolating Angry

usernameishistory · 09/03/2020 11:31

Thank you both for clearing that up Wink

OP posts:
MrsStrangerThing · 09/03/2020 11:31

Agreed Captain, its two weeks for flip sake, not 2 years!

Awkward1 · 09/03/2020 11:32

.
info is being removed from here
It also said they would release low risk prisoners.
No mention of closing schools.
Or stadiums because you are at more risk at your own pub.! (Yet psrliament).
Between the lines - they are going to self isolate. I
But allow wfh.
Really hope that article was not correct
